Well  it finally looks like summer here!   Thankfully!  
On our last cruise we spent a week in London,  also travelling to Winchester cathedral which was stunning.

Buckingham Palace,  for the gardening club we also toured the gardens,  there were trees planted by the Queen’s children,  anniversary roses from the royal family of the Netherlands.

I haven’t watched the Smithsonian series but have watched one on Netflix called The Secrets of Great British Castles and The Tower of London is Season one, episode two. I need to rewatch it, all very interesting and a lot of information. I also watched one on PBS by Lucy Worsley and she interviewed the Ravenmaster.  I don’t remember the name of that one though.

Good early afternoon from New York!

 

We haven't been to Southampton, but did go to London before our Pacific Princess cruise around the British Isles in 2018.  Originally my DH wanted to fly in the evening before our cruise - I vetoed that and said we need a couple of days in London, who knows when we'll get back there!

 

We toured Buckingham Palace the first afternoon, and Westminster Abbey the next morning, and then took the Thames river boat up to the Tower of London.  Unfortunately, it was packed with long lines, and we wanted to see Churchill's War Rooms, so we left and got a taxi to take us back.  We still had to stand outside (in the rain, of course) for over an hour to get into the War Rooms, but they were definitely worth it.  We then had dinner at the Red Lion Pub right down the street...and the bartender let us stand behind the bar!  Our final morning we hopped on the bus to be transported to Dover for our cruise....2 hours through the English countryside.

Once inside - head directly to the the Jewel House. You can always go back and take the Beefeater led tour. Each time I've visited, there were only a handful of visitors in the main exhibit and I could spend as much time as I wanted - sometimes I even walked backwards to stay in place on the moving walkway.

 

Visited London on 4 trips by car around the UK with DH. On one of them DM and DF joined us. We visited the site of his air base - his ready room Quonset hut is still there. Another time I spent 25 days based in London, using the RailPass for day trips.

We arrived early in the morning at Heathrow Airport the day before our cruise.  On our way to the hotel in Southampton we made a stop to see Stonehenge.

I couldn't resist a few more photos of another castle -- Highclere -- I'm sure there are other Downton Abbey fans here. 🙂  It's an easy DIY out of London. No photos were allowed inside, of course. The funniest thing, they had accidentally left a hairdryer in one of the bedrooms -- oops --

Good afternoon from a partly cloudy to partly sunny central Texas.  It has been a busy day, as my plans for the day (laundry) had to change to include a quick trip to the grocery store, and mowing the yard this afternoon.  The ever changing Texas weather, did it again.  It is not supposed to rain today, but tomorrow through the rest of the week.  So if I don't get the yard mowed, I'll be "knee deep" in grass by the time it quits raining.  Yesterday, our final rain total was .92 inches.

 

I enjoy jazz occasionally.  We have plenty of room to compost here and in Quartzsite, but nothing to use it on.  I will salute those who do compost.  @richwmn Rich thanks for the link about Julia Pierpont, who should be honored.  I too found the contemporary author by the same name when I googled her.

 

We first had a lobster roll on Martha's Vineyard in 2011 on the Prinsendam.  Lobster and lobster rolls are something you don't see in Texas, and when you do, it's frozen lobster  I liked it, but DH was so-so on it.  We have tried the McLobster once when we were in the Maritime Provinces on a cruise.  It was better than nothing.

 

@ger_77   You expressed my philosophy about gambling.  When we are in Las Vegas, after a day's sightseeing, I will head to the casino to play the penny slots and usually wind up donating $20 for an evenings fun.  If I'm lucky, I can make my donation last for a couple of hours or more, and it's been enough to get good rates on rooms and lately two or three comped nights. I've even been know to win on occasion - rarely. 🎰

@Sharon in AZ  We haven't seen all the series your mentioned, but may have seen a few episodes of one.  If you get a chance, the Smithsonian series is multi-part and goes in depth about the Tower of London with a lot of behind the scenes features and interviews.

Good Morning from a bit Over Cast Las Vegas, it is to be a very nice weekend. It's currently 86 degrees and the high today is to be 93. So basically perfect for a memorial Day weekend.

Many thanks to Rich @richwmn for the Daily,  as well as Roy @rafinmd for the Celebrations and Shoutouts and of course Jacqui @kazu for the Care List. Sending my thoughts and prayers out to them.

OK, have to say I thought it was funny about the Lobster Roll because an email I opened just before coming into CC was from Bonefish Grill for their Lobster and Shrimp Roll for $17.90. I had it there last summer and it was just a Lobster Roll hmmmm something tells me they are going to skimp on the Lobster 😉 We also have a Cousin's Maine Lobster Truck that comes around to the area grocery store parking lots that is pretty good as well. But nothing beats having one in Maine or Massachusetts. But when you live this far West in the Desert you take what you can get.

This week seemed to drag for me and something tells me the month of June will as well with counting down the days to cruise but everyday seems to bring on a tiny bit more news for the Cruise Industry.

In January, 2016, we flew to London and then took a bus from the Airport to Southampton.  We stayed overnight in a local hotel and found a nice, small restaurant for dinner.  The next morning, we took a cab to the port and boarded Rotterdam VI for an unforgettable voyage  that ended weeks later in Singapore.

Good morning, all! And an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend to all our American Dailyites.  I have never had any luck gambling, so the quote is completely accurate for me. Lobster rolls sound good, but aren’t really a thing on the west coast. Dinner is unknown. It’s our anniversary today, and dine in is allowed as of Tuesday just past, so we are going out for dinner for the first time in months! Yesterday we headed back to Chilliwack, as DH has medical appointments this coming week. I was able to read, but not post, so my apologies for the missing elevator mat! The garden here has come along nicely, and the roses are in bloom!

@NextOne, my deepest condolences on the loss of your DH Ron. No words are even remotely adequate, but my thoughts and support are with you. @smitty34877with what Tana is going through, it is a blessing that you are able to be there for her son in person. How difficult for you all!

@rafinmdRoy, it’s good to see you coming along so well. Even though you say the procedure was minimally invasive, it is still a major deal!

Good afternoon!  Happy Memorial Day weekend to our American friends, we usually have a lot of American cousins here for this weekend - they have been locked out twice now!  We went to Butchart's for lunch - Pat was disappointed they have taken their sausage rolls off the menu - wish they would have changed it to lobster rolls but it is now pepperoni rolls, yuck.  We did have McLobsters once in a Halifax shopping mall - we were amazed the McDonalds could come up with that.  Only in Canada!

 

Jacqui, @kazu, DD's favourite deer deterrent plants are alliums - I'm not sure it works, but we do have a lot now, interspersed among the other plants.

No gardening today. The rain has stopped for a bit, but the ground is too wet for digging.

 

I've never been to the U.K. on a cruise, but I've traveled there several times by air. The most memorable trip as a whole was the first, when I rented a car twice for garden touring. A friend who was working in London met me in Rye for gardens in the southeast. Driving with her took patience. She was always crying out, "We should be there by now! We're lost!" She had no sense of how slowly I was driving, in country lanes so narrow that oncoming traffic couldn't pass and one driver or the other had to back up to a wide place.

 

We had a particularly good time visiting Battle. The obvious reason to go there is the ruin of Battle Abbey, built where the Battle of Hastings actually took place, but the good time was from the village pub. The landlord mentioned having a stock of very old ginger beer and opened some for us, first putting on his volunteer firefighter gear in case it exploded. No pictures as that was before digital photography.

 

However, the trip I most recommend from London is to Bletchley Park, the site of the codebreaking work during World War II. It has been dramatized in more than one film, but it is well worth visiting in person, and the gate is visible from the Bletchley rail station, which is an easy trip from Euston.  I do have digital photos but can't find them, so here are some from Wikimedia.

Yes, to an excursion to Salisbury Cathedral and also to Stonehenge with the ship. Think it was the Crown Princess or ???🚢.....husband and I decided to spend a few nights in Winchester and couldn't get the song out of our head, lol! 🎶 Saturday market was fun! I'm a shopper, ha~ha!🙃

The Netfix series on Selfridges was great except for the 'sad' ending. 🙄
