madera1 Posted September 17, 2021 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2021 Just heard from someone on the Nieuw Amsterdam that the passengers have been told to be careful as winds 75 and up to 15 ft waves. The seasick bags are available! Gals we went last week.
12cruise2 Posted September 17, 2021 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2021 Yes, we're on the NA right now. It was rough last night and still is at 1:30 . We're fine; love that melclazine; took one last evening and we're going strong. Elevators were/were not working at times. Not waves but swells.

SilvertoGold Posted September 17, 2021 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2021 (edited) Moderate seas! Likely confused! Not as wild as the North Pacific gets, but would suit me. walking the deck in that weather is an adventure I miss. rkacruiser Posted September 17, 2021 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2021 How can anyone be surprised by this type of rough seas? If one is, then one has not done your homework as to what to expect. 5

As well as strong winds...enough to cause damage to the Noordam a couple of years ago.

dfish Posted September 17, 2021 #9 Share Posted September 17, 2021 Yes, it has been a bit of a wild ride last night and this morning. Captain reported winds of 55-70 knots. It is starting to settle down a bit now. You have to have some motion of the ocean! We said when we booked we didn’t care if it was cold and rainy all week. We’re on a ship.

No, just the first day out of Seattle and now. It was wild enough last night that the furniture on the balcony was totally rearranged. I rescued three chair cushions but one was missing. The stewards found it on the balcony next door. 6

St. Louis Sal Posted September 18, 2021 #14 Share Posted September 18, 2021 Sounds like fun-love that ocean motion (as long as I don’t fall out of bed). I remember our first September Alaskan cruise with our DDs. Leaving Ketchikan we hit some majorly bumpy seas all the way down to Victoria. Just walking down the corridors was an adventure. Our visit to Victoria, which was supposed to include a late afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel, became a late evening tea. Our tour of the city became an in-the-dark description of what we might have seen in daylight (our bus driver/tour guide was a hoot). quack2 Posted September 18, 2021 #15 Share Posted September 18, 2021 That system is bringing much-needed rain to the Pacific Northwest this weekend.
bcummin Posted September 18, 2021 #16 Share Posted September 18, 2021 Some of us are thankful for the much needed rain. Other areas had a worse storm with downed trees and power outages. Hopefully the NA has docked safely, and travel is good for those coming and going. Barbara

On our first AK cruise--S/B. Whittier to Vancouver--we hit a storm in the Gulf of Alaska. It was bumpy all day, but it really did not seem like that big a deal. We went to bed that night and were rocked to sleep. I was very deep asleep some hours later when I drowsily realized that I was rolling out of the bed. I reached out with my arm and my right hand touched the floor--excuse me, the deck. I was able to stabilize myself while my wife was rolling into me. Technically, I suppose we did not fall out of bed, but that is just a technicality. We heard lots of stories the next morning. 5

SightCRR Posted September 18, 2021 #19 Share Posted September 18, 2021 55-70 knots I don't think so. Maybe mph. 70 knots is one mile/hour under cat 4 hurricane at 129 mph. No big deal but still bumpy.

SightCRR Posted September 18, 2021 #21 Share Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) Not sure how I got so fouled up but 70 knots definitely possible. I went from knots to km/hour. Sorry. Edited September 18, 2021 by SightCRR

Kinda surprised the room stewards did not bring those balcony cushions inside after receiving the captain's heads up on the weather condition which, depending on the severity (category), includes orders to close/secure the deadlights on the (interior of) portholes in the crew berthing areas

Bookited Posted September 19, 2021 #24 Share Posted September 19, 2021 I can't remember a night when the cushions weren't brought in fair seas or not.
rkacruiser Posted September 19, 2021 #25 Share Posted September 19, 2021 On my aft Neptune Suite veranda on the Westerdam, my Cabin Steward never brought any of the cushions into the suite. I had to do so. And, contrary what some have said in the past, there were significant soot issues. (Take a white bath towel and wipe it across the furniture and the towel becomes black.)
