Jewelry. Do you take your wedding ring/engagement ring?

Recommended Posts

true story of why not to wear expensive jewelry when going to the beach...We had a friend that was a flight attendant years ago and she went to party at a very famous bar in jamaica one night. She went to use the rest room and when she exited a man with a large knife explained to her that the ring she was wearing was coming off even if he had to cut the finger off to get it. It was a two carat diamond solitaire and very high end quality.....Needless to say she gave up the ring and the case was never solved nor did she get the ring back.....proof that you have to be vigilant all of the time when traveling and wearing high end jewelry when off of the ship is just foolish, you make yourself an easy target..i have a friend that owns a couple of jewelry stores in the caribbean and he too advises clients to not wear the high end stuff until you get back to the ship...just sayin'

DW will not wear nice jewelry onto an island or at a beach, but she will wear to dinner on board.

She will leave jewelry on the desk, as we both are confident even the room steward would not confiscate.

So if you are not afraid to wear it at home, why not on a cruise?  I can’t see much of a difference.

Eddie

Why not leave your jewelry in the safe? That is what we do when we don't wear our jewelry on a cruise for whatever reason.

Wait, wha?   I thought I read that they stayed on the home port time?    I guess that wouldn't work for TA.

Totally depends on the Captain. We have had it change one week and not the next on a B2B. Pay attention to the compass or app and sometimes they leave a card on your bed although not sure if that works now they are on once a day service.

I always keep a manual watch on ship time like others but make mental note while in port of local time for opening/closing, excursions, Happy Hour etc.

You don’t want to turn up 1 hour adrift for Happy Hour!

I used to always wear my rings/jewelry on cruises until the cruise I lost the diamond out of my wedding ring!  Luckily we were actually able to find the diamond!  We had just been on the sports deck and went back to look around and see if by chance we could find it.  Was elated to find it on the basketball court! What are those odds!?!   One of the prongs had broken off.  Since then, I leave all my good jewelry at home!

This is why you should get your jewelry inspected.   I have a loop and check mine a few times a year.  Also, my ring was bought at a jewelry store that does free inspections every 6 months and if a stone falls out, they will cover it then under the warranty.  If it hasn't been inspected within 6 months of loss they won't cover it.  Anyway, that wouldn't stop me from wearing mine as that could happen anywhere.

I never gave this any thought, but I recently read somewhere that people don’t take their wedding rings and engagement rings on cruises. We’re going to eastern and western Caribbean. We don’t scuba dive or snorkel. Mostly go to local beaches/beach clubs and bars near ports. I never take my rings off. Now I’m debating whether or not to take them.

In 147 cruises and additional land vacations in the Caribbean, traveling since 1994, I have NEVER not worn my nice jewelry, including my wedding rings.  I wear my rings, my bracelets, etc.  Now, to amend - I only wear my bracelets and necklasses on the ship or around a land vacation resort, not out in the ports when cruising.  But I  wear my wedding rings all the time, even when swimming, snorkling, etc and my diamond studs are always in my 2nd ear piercing hole.

Why have jewelry if you're afraid to wear it. The wife always blings out on a cruise. Never an issue in 150+ voyages.

Same here!  I bought it to wear it.  Every night on the cruise or a land vacation resort I wear my diamond tennis bracelet to dinner and such.  My wedding rings never come off.  Everything is insured, but really not worried about it.  I don't wear my bracelets and stuff out in the cruise ports, but always wear my wedding rings.

Same here.  Also still wearing my wedding rings, bracelets and diamond pendant and until I read this thread I would never even have thought of taking them off.  Everything stays on always.

I used to wear mine, take other pieces for outfits, etc.  I enjoyed wearing my jewelry as I rarely have an occasion here at home.  I have full confidence in the crew.  I don't have that confidence in the ports as much anymore. Depends on which ports you are considering. There are a few I honestly would not want to go off ship on with more than a simple band.  But, we tend to do some excursions on our own and not in large groups. We are selective which ports we do that in, of course.   If you decide to bling out, you can opt to lock those pieces in your room safe.  I was on a diff line earlier this year and lost a bracelet on board.  It was never turned in. We were on the ship two weeks; lost it first formal night in about two hours.  Did not go near the outside decks during that time. Dinner and back to room. Retraced all our steps twice. It is what it is.  Ironically, that piece was sentimental only; had no real value except to me.  Bought it on our first cruise to Mexico. Some $12 bauble at the time.  Can't find anything close to it on the internet. Guess I have bad taste.....hahaha.

I never take any good jewelry with me and then I don't have to worry about losing anything or being robbed and I can focus just enjoying myself.

I bring my best jewelry with me - it's all insured and it's just stuff. I seldom wear anything while in ports except for my engagement ring and wedding band (and not for water sports because they could slip off my finger once it shrinks in the water) but onboard I wear it all.  If I get to the point that I don't feel safe wearing it on the ship then I'll give it away or sell it. There's no point in owning it just to keep it at home.

I never take my rings off ... well, except when I was pregnant and my fingers were swollen.  And when I had surgery a couple years ago.  Other than those few occasions, 33 years I've been wearing these rings.

If people think thieves are looking only for large diamonds/stones, they are mistaken.  The gold it's mounted in is worth a lot and sometimes more than the stones.  As I said earlier in this thread, I wear it because i have it, but I don't wear my best ashore unless I'm going directly to a jewelry store to trade in a piece which we have done several times.  I wear my best onboard, but I still wear my 2 ct solitaire engagement ring and 1 ct band ashore, except on some excursions.  We also don't tend to go off wandering on our own like we did when we were younger.

Earlier this year on a long Euro sailing, there was a regular blackjack player who wore stunning pieces of jewelry every night at the table. One night, the casino dealer asked, "So how much jewelry did you bring with you?"

The player answered, "Oh, about half a million dollars' worth."
