@chengkp75  sending up a flare for Jimbo

Just so everyone knows, I don't do notifications.

Been reading the thread, so I'll give some long distance diagnosis.  There are two systems in an azipod;  the propulsion system (motor and propeller) and the steering system (the small motor and gears that rotate the entire pod around so the propeller faces in different directions).  From the description given, it sounds like the steering on the starboard pod has failed.  When one pod is "tracking" (following the course), and one is veering side to side, this will cause vibrations.  Even with the starboard pod stopped, if it is not locked facing directly aft, there will be vibrations from the other pod, and this may or may not change with the ship's speed (as Jimbo noted, vibration eased at higher speed).

Depending on what broke, will determine what can be done, and how long it will take.  Frankly, I don't see this steering problem as requiring a dry dock, as the azimuthing system is inside the ship.  Also depending on what broke will determine if they can lock the pod facing aft to proceed onward, maybe doing cruises at slow speed on one pod.

Many countries, including the US, will require a tug escort for an azipod equipped ship that only has one pod working, as there is no redundancy in steering anymore.  This is one of the problems with pods, you are combining propulsion and steering into one unit, and if the propulsion part fails, the steering part is a failure as well, since rotating a dead pod around does nothing for steering the ship.

So @chengkp75, might they be able to lock the pod aft as a total temporary fix, get the parts they need to get it fully functional, and then do that final repair while the ship continues to operate? I know you are just guessing but is something I'm describing possible so as to minimize disruption?

Yes.  They may have locked it while the ship was stationary, and are now proceeding with it in "trail".  Not sure how well they would do with it operating while directionally locked, and using the other pod for steering, so they may need to think about removing the blades on the locked pod to reduce drag while they get the parts to repair the azimuthing system.  But, yes, repairs to the azimuthing system could all be done while in service (mostly in port, where the slipstream does not want to swing the pod around while they are working on it).

Carnival GUEST ADVISORY
CANCELLATION NOTICE
CARNIVAL PRIDE – JULY 21, 2023
July 19, 2023
Dear Carnival Pride Guest:
We have an urgent message about your upcoming cruise. Carnival Pride is experiencing a technical issue and is making an unplanned stop in Kiel, Germany today so that we can board expert technicians. While we are working to make the repair and get the ship back to Dover as quickly as possible, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 9-day cruise that is scheduled to depart from Dover on Friday as planned.
We know you have been looking forward to your summer cruise and are very sorry to share this unexpected, last-minute news. Please note:
For those who have not yet traveled to Europe, you will receive a full refund and a 100 percent future cruise credit (FCC), plus any airline cancellation fees (see below for how to submit those receipts).* There is no need to call. Your refund will be automatically processed to your original form of payment.
For those who are already in Europe, we will reimburse you for two nights of hotel (up to US$300 per night) and a food per diem of US$100 per day, per person, beginning on Friday to cover your expenses for the cancelled cruise. We will also cover any airline change fees if you decide to return home now.
Based on when we can make the repairs and return the ship to Dover, we may be able to operate a revised itinerary with a shorter cruise that will end in Dover on the originally scheduled debarkation date of Sunday, July 30. We will send a follow-up communication on Thursday with the revised itinerary. If we are able to operate a shorter cruise, we will provide a prorated refund of your original cruise fare and an onboard credit.
We are also exploring any availability on 7-day cruises out of Southampton on July 22 on our sister lines.
Receipts for the reimbursement for airline rebooking fees, hotel and food per diems should be sent to airreimbursements@carnival.com. Other travel-related expenses directly related to this travel disruption may be submitted and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Thank you for your understanding. And again, our most sincere apologies.
Sincerely,
Colleen Oliverio
VP, Guest Services - Contact Centers
*The future cruise credit (FCC) is based on the cruise fare paid for this voyage (excluding taxes, fees, and port expenses), is non-transferable, cannot be used as a deposit or applied to a chartered sailing, has no cash value, and must be redeemed by July 31, 2024, on any Carnival Cruise Line departure open for sale. The FCC may only be used in the same currency in which the above voyage was originally paid and cannot be used for taxes, fees and port expenses, Carnival Vacation Protection, onboard charges, or gratuities. The booking guest shall be responsible for payment of the difference between the amount of the FCC and the amount of the new booking if higher. There is no refund for the FCC or for any cancellation penalties that may be assessed, and the FCC will be forfeited if you choose to cancel. After you have booked your new cruise, please use this link to provide us with the booking information so we can process your FCC.

So, what would happen if this had happened when the Pride was on her TA in the middle of the Atlantic?

The same thing as has happened now.  She would have stopped to evaluate the damage, and then proceed on one azipod.  95% of ships only have one propeller, and cross the ocean every day.

I love all the technical terms, thank you @chengkp75 and @jsglow but all I'm hearing is:

blah, blah, blah PODS blah, blah, blah POD...(Gary Larson reference) so I'm glad you all know what's going on and sharing.  Thank you!!😉

Then at midnight we had a knock on the door.  One of the entertainers telling us we had to be packed and be in butterflies by 8.  Long story short, thought it was for all of us.  Woke everybody up and got them packing. Turns out just our cabin.  Long lines at GS to find this out.  Some packed and ready to go and some in limbo till rest of info comes thru.  To quote a Grateful Dead song “what a long strange trip its been”.

now if I could get our laundry we sent out…….

Oh how awful that you are gonna be split up from the rest of your party, I hope they have a fix for that too.

Sending good vibes and strength to you all on the rest of your travels and thank you for keeping us all informed on the situation as it was unfolding.

Safe travels and I hope your laundry catches up with you sometime.

My guess is it was still daylight and the rose colored glass on the funnel resulted in the tint.

Laundry was waiting for us when we went to room.  Check.  Went to Butterflies at 8:15.  Very crowded.  Talked with entertainment team member while waiting.   They were up all night going thru stuff
