Ret MP Posted September 3, 2023 #82 Share Posted September 3, 2023 I don't know how RCCL can do so well with bread/rolls/buns and really suck with desserts. Some of the pies are okay, I haven't been impressed with any of their cakes though. I got the Keylime Pie once, which I usually love, and it was Keylime jello in a pie shell with cool whip on top. Not kewl! As much as I'm not a fan of Rustbucke Cruise Lines (which has nothing to do with rust), I think their cakes and pies are sooo soooo sooo much better than RCCL. My favorite pie is Pecan. Neither lines does it well.

Why don’t they call it surimi cakes and stop lying to us. They don’t put walnuts in a pecan pie……

I don't eat bread with my meals at home or on a cruise ship -- not that I don't like bread, but it's about a low-carb diet (I also don't gain weight on a cruise; this is just one way I make that happen). Bread just isn't at the top of my choice list. But, yeah, I can see that it being something different makes it a real treat. What an incredibly informative post!! I ate it up! See what I did there? 😎😜 Thank you so much! So, definitely avoiding the chicken cordon blue and it seems several people have commented on less than great pork and prime rib. So many votes for beef bourguignon and tenderloin, short ribs and shrimp, and asian pork, escargot. I’m definitely getting those! I wish they had your carrot cake with cheesecake in the middle. Yum! Glad you enjoyed it! You're considering the right choices. Remember, you can send things back, if they aren't what you personally like. Try your hand at a carrot cake with a cheesecake in the middle. At the worst, what do you have? Something messy and delicious. Trust me, I've been selling cakes for four decades, and I'm only mid-50s, so I KNOW CAKE. They'll give it to you under a dome with extra napkin /silverware. - Skip dessert in the MDR and go up to the Windjammer. You'll be able to SEE the desserts before you choose them. Their desserts tend to be cut very small, so you can have a couple small things instead of one medium-sized dessert. Sometimes they do cool things like a chocolate fountain or made-to-order /top them yourself Churros in the evenings. Personal observation: Burgers seem to be the #1 item of choice for lunch in the Windjammer. I wish they'd make them slider-sized instead of quite large. Regardless, sometimes you just want something simple and comforting. A burger hits the spot, but -- personally -- one per cruise is enough for me. Rare cruiselvr04 Posted September 5, 2023 #87 Share Posted September 5, 2023 Cheese rolls, chocolate desserts if they have them. Tortellini is good but I’m sure it’s prepackaged and just warmed. Most salmon dishes. I get the Turkey dinner. Sometimes it’s dry but I can get lucky and have it moist. Sweet potato is good. A step above a TV dinner. The onion tort has been soggy lately but you could lucky on that. I start with a cheese roll and mostly nibble after that unless something’s really good. I no longer gain weight on our cruises but I don’t starve. We have a 16 night next month. It will be interesting to see what’s repeated or if we get something new…..we will do 5 nights in speciality restaurants.
SchoolNurseMom Posted September 5, 2023 #88 Share Posted September 5, 2023 I've definitely had some worse meals and better meals on a ship. But, I am not cooking or cleaning all week. My only decisions have to do with what activity to do next and what drink to enjoy. We've always been able to find something decent to eat even if we visit the buffet on the way out from MDR. LOL!
Lady Hudson Posted September 5, 2023 #89 Share Posted September 5, 2023 We cruised before and after the menu changes. Right after the menu changes we cruised and were very disappointed with the “new” menus, the items that were missing and many temperature issues. We cruised recently (August 17). Menus had changed slightly and some favorites were back. We were happier with the food. My take - Royal got a lot of negative food feedback and are making some improvements. I think it is important to fill out the end of cruise surveys to let Royal know both the good and bad about our experiences.

It means something you'd expect to find on the "high street" (= "main street" in the US, I think) in pretty much any town or city in the country, so something that would generally be considered ordinary, definitely not fancy or special. I printed out the new menus for what I believe will be served on our upcoming 8 night cruise, (Welcome Aboard, Royal Night, Mexican Night, Italian Night, French Night, Caribbean Night, Bon Voyage, and British Night). I see no mention of short ribs, which we love. Have you had them since the new menus came out? Perhaps it's another item that has been removed.
