Smoking section is on Deck 5 Port side, so I choose starboard, so I’m not in the line for stray cigarette smoke.
We were on Deck 6 most recently. But as the attached photo shows Captain George backed into the port of Vigo, so we saw the dock buildings, from our Balcony.

On a one-way cruise for which I am booking a balcony, I consider how much sun or shade is likely on each side and make my choice accordingly.    It doesn't matter on a round-trip itinerary when you'll get all sun positions over the course of the cruise, nor does it matter to me without a balcony, as there is no way to predict what I will see out the window when docked.

On a directional cruise I would pick the side that potentially would offer some scenic cruising, in this case the port side.

Your particular one way sailing still offers a mix of directions at times though.

Tough call.

Whereas on a round trip it makes less difference because the ship turns around at the halfway point.

How the ship will face when docked is usually impossible to predict.
