NYC to Bermuda - January?

Hi.  I am thinking about sailing out of NY to Bermuda in January.  Has anyone done this before?  Are the seas rough? How about the weather in Bermuda in January?

It is winter season in Bermuda. It is not tropical. Expect pleasant temperatures in the upper 60’s or low 70’s. Perfect for golf. It won’t be beach weather. A lot of beach concessions close and don’t reopen until April.

November through February are the roughest seas but that does not mean they will necessarily be rough. Last year was a bad year and there were a some sailings that could not enter the channel and dock in Bermuda because of high winds.

Bermuda is always a bit iffy.  Our September sailing from New York wound up in Nassau due to weather concerns.   But you can have calm seas any time of year - and at least in January the island will not be crowded - and you could get 70 F weather.   Enjoy.

It's going to be VERY cold in NYC, just pretty cool in Bermuda.  I am surprised they even offer this cruise.  Must be some contractual obligation, it can't be due to demand.

They do have a contract to do a certain number of sailings to Bermuda but I also think it is a test. Bermuda is probably giving them a very good deal, reduced fees on the winter sailings.

Not necessarily very cold.I got married in a January and the temperature was in the 70’s

If it is cold on the ship you can stay inside by the second day it will be warm.

True.  It is *likely* to be cold, not guaranteed.  But definitely cold for a non-cold weather destination cruise

I wouldn’t do it because:

a) there are better places to go in January.

b) I am not interested in a cruise that calls at Dockyard, rather than St. George and/or Hamilton.

c) that sailing is, I believe, offered by NCL - which I avoid.

I'm also leaving from NY in January, stopping in Bermuda.  As for the weather in NY, I'm just hoping it's warm enough to walk to the cruise terminal from the train station.  Bermuda is our first stop, with sea days before and after.  I'm mentally preparing myself for three sea days, so if we do make it to Bermuda, icing on the cake.  Birthday cake, since I'll be celebrating my birthday on the cruise :)

Because it is a long walk even though it might not look long on a map. The avenues are spaced far apart. The sidewalks are packed with people. You probably have luggage.

oh, thanks.  Looks like it's just under 2 miles, and definitely under an hour.  Not long at all.  That's just a warm up walk

It’s easy to take the ferry to St George and Hamilton from the dockyard so that wouldn’t be the worst thing. The huge ships are too big to dock at Hamilton and St George. I remember the good old days too, just meandering off the ship.

Would the ferry be running in the off-season?  Of course there will always be a bus possibility.

The public ferry between Hamilton and Dockyard runs every day year round. 

 

While the public ferry between St. George's and Dockyard only runs during peak season, typically April through October, if you're on an NCL ship their private ferry runs whenever an NCL ship is in port.

With just carryon/pull bags it's a nice walk if it is a sunny day.  We love to walk in NYC and that distance is nothing to us (Battery Park to Central Park is one of our faves, but not with luggage).  With big bags it might not be great as there are some rough sidewalks you will be bumping over

Well to each their own. I walk 3 miles every day but on empty streets and trails with no luggage. In January there might be snow and ice. I used to travel from DC to Manhattan many times a month which brings up something  else. You really should go a day early. I would advise that any time of year but in the winter there are often delays and cancellations. Amtrak equipment runs great in fair weather but in cold or hot weather lots of problems with equipment, overhead wires, switches freezing.

The problem is that there are few sailings that do St. George's and Hamiltion and most of those are during hurricane season. I almost booked an Oceania this past September  sailing and that one was diverted so glad I did not book it. I won't book NCL anymore as my last NCL cruise which was a December sailing to the Bahmas was the pits. Really could not do much outside until the second day, limited pool deck, and the casino opened up in the main public area. My muster station was in the casino, stunk and there were jerks smoking during muster. I would still do Celebrity to Bermuda to the Dockyard as they have June sailings.
