Booked our first cruise this month!

We booked our first cruise recently and it’s coming up in 3+ weeks. We’re going on a 5 day/4 night cruise of the Bahamas aboard the MSC Magnifica out of Miami. Can’t wait! We’re flying into Miami 2 days before the cruise and spending a day in Everglades NP before we depart. We also fly out 2 days after the cruise ends and spending a day in Key West before we fly home. We were looking at longer cruises but wanted to test the waters and see how we liked it before committing to anything longer.

A little about us! I’m 28 and my sister, the one accompanying me, is 23. We’ve visited all contiguous 48 states and just recently started exploring internationally with a month long trip to New Zealand and Australia in 2023. We’re originally from Wisconsin but she lives near Seattle and I’m outside of Knoxville.

1/27 Flights to Miami from Knoxville and Seattle

1/28 Everglades NP

1/29 Embarkation

1/30 Ocean Cay

1/31 Day at sea

2/1 Nassau

2/2 Debarkation

2/3 Key West

2/4 Flights to Knoxville and Seattle from Miami

My question is about visiting Key West.  Are you flying or driving?  If driving, it’s over 3 hours,  long drive for not a lot of time in Key West…. EM

Driving there and flying back. Have a friend in Key West who needs her car back and it’s in Miami. The last time we drove to Key West it was 2 hours 30 minutes though. We went late at night with very little traffic and were able to maintain 80 a majority of the way. We’ll do the same this time.

Good for you!  Usually I'd say, "A 5/4 isn't long enough!  Doesn't justify your travel!", but since you're using this as a "test" to see whether you like cruising, I think you're making a good choice.  We did the same thing ... and we all loved it.

Welcome to CC. Did you have a question? I hope your first cruise is a memorable one.

You'll come up with some questions!

Serendipitous!

I have a friend who does 5-6 cruises a year and seeing all his post on Facebook is what got me interested 😊

Hello @Ty0604 and welcome to the Cruise Critic message boards!

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers, and we are so glad you found us! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list for the various forums. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will reply to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum where it will be on topic. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your inquiry if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you.

To find your fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with you on your cruise, you need to post on the specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your cruise line, ship and sail date. Please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the GuidelinesWe also have the following oldie but goodie Cruise Critic article you might enjoy8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call

The specific Roll Call thread for your cruise is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you. Roll Calls are for people to get to know one another before their cruise. Therefore, there will be all kinds of discussion!

Once you locate the Roll Call thread for your specific line, ship and sail date if one is already created, first read through the whole thread to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you. Then use the dark blue Reply to this topic button to post an introductory post about yourself on the Roll Call thread. When done with your message, click the dark blue Submit Reply button.

If you want to address a particular post already in the thread, click the Reply to this topic button and then be sure to click the Quote feature on that particular post as I did yours so all will be aware of what your post concerns. You type your message UNDER the light blue quote box then click the dark blue Submit Reply button. If the member has used the Follow feature on the thread, they will get a notification that you have quoted their post.

If a Roll Call thread for your specific line, ship & sail date has NOT been created, please feel free to create it! Just follow the directions in How To: Create A New Roll CallThen sit back and wait for your fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with you to join in with posts. They will appreciate you starting the Roll Call! And don't worry about any responsibilities in starting a Roll Call thread. Roll Calls belong to everyone on the Roll Call thread. There is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread.

If you ever need technical help in regard to using the Cruise Critic message board software, go to the Need Help Using the Forums? Check Here! forum. You will see a large amount of "How to..." pinned threads toward the top of the forum's first page. Also, browse through the threads in the forum looking for threads of interest. Again, you will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

If you are looking for things to do in Nassau we love going to Breezes resort. It is about 12 min. from the cruise port. We just get a ride at the port and pay 100$ a person at the resort. That includes all your food, drinks, pools, hot tub and the beach.

Our first cruise was great. I’m surprised how good the food was. I ate nonstop at times. Ocean Cay was wonderful but Nassau I wouldn’t recommend. The US Embassy currently has a travel advisory there right now. 18 murders in January alone. The beaches are dirty. We did do a city tour that was okay. Went to the Queens Staircase and stopped by a lot of rum factories but we don’t drink. I would 100% cruise with MSC again though! Looking forward to booking our next one.

I would like to invite you to come over to the MSC board here and tell us about your cruise.  So many people there only talk about the Yacht Club and make those of us in the rest of the ship feel like second class citizens.  But 90% of guests are having a good time NOT in the Yacht Club.  EM

If I can find it I’ll definitely post! What’s the Yacht Club? Is that the fancy pool/spa area? I went to there once to watch the sunrise. Didn’t seem too special. Just less crowded than the main pools.

The MSC board here is located under Cruise Lines A-O.  The Yacht Club is the ‘ship within a ship’ concept on MSC, limited to those who book it.  Has its own pool, decks, restaurant and buffet…. EM

Oh. I’m not sure the Magnifica had that. They did have a members only pool deck with a spa etc but the only buffet was open to anymore. They had other restaurants as well but only a few did you have to pay for and anyone could go.
