dock Posted March 4 #1 Share Posted March 4 (edited) We received an email this morning re two people on a January sailing testing positive for Legionella. Did anyone else receive this memo? We were on the Feb 11th- 18th sailing. 10118. Im curious if others on that or other sailings received the email and if it’s a generic email or specific to certain cabins or decks. Thanks. dock Posted March 4 Author #7 Share Posted March 4 (edited) @Altamar, thanks. I feel a bit relieved if it’s just a generic memo to all. Plan on getting tested tomorrow anyway. Just to make sure. Edited March 4 by dock
Arizona Wildcat Posted March 4 #8 Share Posted March 4 (edited) The email would have gone out to passengers who were identified as having significant contact with those who tested positive. Could be adjacent cabins, dinner mates or whatever. Possibly subsequent cruises, but January is a while ago Edited March 4 by Arizona Wildcat 1
Altamar Posted March 4 #9 Share Posted March 4 You’re welcome dock. I too believe it was generic since we sailed in June.

Maybe, but if they identified a source on the Ascent, perhaps they decided to send out notices to a larger group.

Cruise ships usually have issues with it in the potable water systems. Drinking the water won't give it to you, but showering with it could, because it's transmitted via aerosolized water particles. I would think everyone on that cruise would have gotten the email. 2

We were on the Ascent the week after you. 9th floor if that makes any difference. I can tell you that the water had a 'different' taste to it and was not like the water of other ships. I am not sure this is related but the taste was quite noticeable to me.
Rare hcat Posted March 4 #14 Share Posted March 4 We were on Ascent 1/28. Luckily we. did not have that illness, but both of us had a terrible flu like something.. congestion ..muscle aches etc after we got home .It .was not Covid but awful.. No way to know where we picked it up. Drove home from port, stopped for gas and pizza later..and next day BOOM!
Rare Folsomdoc Posted March 4 #15 Share Posted March 4 This could be a problem if more cases emerge in people who have sailed this ship. As it is, if it’s only a couple of folks they could have contracted it at the hotel prior to sailing. On a ship it could be from the potable water system, the AC, the pools or hot tubs. Disinfecting can be quite a chore involving draining all these streams, flushing with chlorine. Likely this has been reported to the CDC and they will be testing for a source on the ship. H2OH! Posted March 4 #17 Share Posted March 4 can someone post the content of the email? Just curious. We were on the 1/21/24 sailing- beautiful ship and service was fantastic.
Pushka Posted March 4 #18 Share Posted March 4 Legionella exists in the airconditioning system. Once detected it's not known how long prior that people might be infected. Once detected the ship airconditioning needs significant cleaning and testing. You don't need to have close contact with a person, but the airconditioning system. Once detected it's not known how long prior that people might be infected. Once detected the ship airconditioning needs significant cleaning and testing. You don't need to have close contact with a person, but the airconditioning system. Legionella needs water to remain viable, and the air in the HVAC system on ships tends to be very dry, so the major spot where legionella grows is the condensate pans under the cooling coils. These pans are required to have sanitizing pads placed in them for just this reason. Therefore, the main source of possible legionella infection on cruise ships are the shower heads, where there is always just a little water in the shower head when turned off, and which then becomes aerosolized when the shower is turned on. For this reason, the shower heads on cruise ships are scheduled to be taken off every 6 months and soaked in bleach. So, while missed maintenance in either case (HVAC condensate pan or shower heads), the fact that there are only about 70 condensate pans on the ship, but a couple of thousand shower heads means that the odds on favorite for being missed is with the shower heads. Also, the condensate pan pads are changed more frequently than the shower heads are sanitized. 2

We contacted it from an event here in our condo complex (yes, it exists outside of a cruise ship) and those symptoms mirror ours. 2 day incubation for most here and then 3-4 days of those symptoms .
