Longshot but - is Playmakers (or any sports bar) open 24 hours on Oasis?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

My Celtics are beginning the NBA Finals this week and it just so happens that if there is a game 7, it will be taking place while I am on the Oasis in the middle of the Mediterranean. At 2 am local time!!!

Is there any way I will be able to watch this? I'm getting internet but worried the service will not be good enough to stream live video (and who knows if I even can from out of the US with rights and all). Would love if there was a place on the ship to watch it.

Note - I dont even care about drinking or being served at that time, just having a place with working TVs

Unfortunately they won't be open.

So no where on board to watch the game? Boo. Was hoping since basketball is a pretty global event they may show it.

I saw some football games at  night where they do the dive show. If no dive show they were showing sports. I got sick and stayed in my boardwalk cabin a lot ... heard the games play by play. I'd look around might be shown somewhere.

You can stream fine. We do it all the time.

The NBA finals will be on ABC and FUBO. If you have HULU+Live, YoutubeTV or any other cable/satellite that has your local ABC station, you can stream the game. I would highly recommend getting a VPN so that you are not geo-locked.

However, I will warn you that from my experience, if you attempt to watch YoutubeTV on a device that has a GPS, the GPS location will override the VPN, and if you attempt to turn off your GPS, it will refuse to work. I don't know if any other service does the same.

If you have a firestick (or Roku?), it does not have a GPS, so that's what we primarily use anyway.

Also, I swear I've read that some people have reported that for some major sporting events, they will make them available at 1 bar, even if they are at odd hours due to the ship's location. I would kind of think a game 7 would qualify? But I certainly would not count on this.

Can you plug a firestick into the TV in the room?

They typically have some sports channels. Not sure if it would include what you want or not.

Even if the games are supposed to be on ESPN, you likely won't have an ESPN in the Med that is carrying the Celtics.  We were on Liberty recently and were able to see the Celtics and Bruins playoff games for the first few days but once we were getting ESPN Caribbean, we did not get the games.  We were able to stream them over our Verizon FIOS app. I would make sure you subscribe to something that you can stream in the Med.

Yes. Most cabins' TVs have the HDMI ports accessible.

You should bring a Universal remote so that you can get access to a 'Source' button.

On newer ships' that have TVs with the interactive UI  (not sure if Oasis has this), you will also need to unplug the network cable and power cycle the TV. When the network cable is plugged in, it will auto-launch the custom UI and you usually will not be able to switch the source.

No. They do not have network channels and what they do have is so limited it is useless to us. That is why we travel with a Firestick and a universal remote.

Thanks all. Hoping i can at least stream on my phone 🙂

Again, I highly recommend a VPN service. I use ExpressVPN, but any will work as long as they have servers in the US.

As others have stated, Playmaker’s will be closed on your ship. You should have no problem streaming the game. On the bright side, the loyal diehard Celtics fans in Boston will be there to cheer the team on at the Garden and on TV when they are on the road.

I think all of the ships have Starlink internet now, if that's true, you should be fine steaming it on your phone. High likelihood that game could reach game 7.

My daughter and I both watched sporting events on our phones on the Symphony (regular Caribbean route, we were somewhere between Mexico and Honduras) and also on the Spectrum, while in the middle of the South China Sea. I even made a phone call on that one (there was a bit of a delay/dead spots on the call though.

I think you might be overestimating the number of people in Europe who follow the NBA that closely and RCs flexibly when it comes to their schedules.

Indeed. The three biggest sports in the US - (American) football, basketball and baseball, are all fairly niche in Europe and don’t feature much on TV.

Soccer, on the other hand …

According to this schedule:

https://sport24live.com/schedule/print?type[]=568&programme[]=572&days=06%2F06%2F2024 - 06%2F08%2F2024

Sport24 are showing the NBA finals starting this Friday overnight. Assuming it's the same by the time you get to game 7 it should be broadcast on the Sport24 channel. Sport24 should be available in your cabin as it has been on all Oasis ships I've been on in the past (both in the Caribbean and the Med).

Enjoy 🙂

In my experience, I've taken the Oasis from Bayonne to Bahamas 5 times over the last 3 Sept/Oct's.   And I've noticed that if a game is showing at Playmakers, it's also on in the cabin TV (except for early NFL Sunday games. If 6 are on in Playmakers, you'll get 4 in the cabin).  For a European sailing, I guess you'll find out before me.

Possibly **possibly** the casino.  Pretty sure Oasis class ships have TV's in the casino 'lounge' area.  And are typically the latest venue open.  Won't be a big screen but might work.  GO CELTS!

I just put a post on page 3 of my "Live from Anthem" thread this morning about how to do a Firestick on the stateroom TV if you are subscribed to a streaming service which carries the game.  Make sure you also get a VPN and/or GPS spoofer (YouTubeTV).  Sounds like you might have the game on the stateroom TV anyway if Sport24 is carrying it.

You SHOULD be able to watch it in the room at worst (no competition from the NHL).  If you couldn't watch it in the room, you wouldn't be able to watch at Playmakers either, they don't have a special feed.

I ran into GPS issues trying to watch the Bruins and Celtics on YouTubeTV and ESPN+, but was able to watch the games on my "MAX" app if it wasn't on TV.

On another note, this series better not go 7.  C's in 5!

I don't know whether this will have any bearing on being able to watch the NBA game on board but in a week or so the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany starts.

Its a massive event over here in the UK and Europe and any European sports channel (if that is what the ship receives) will likely be 24/7 football for 4 weeks, especially welcomed I would imagine by the mainly Spanish and Italian passengers on Oasis.
