Walkie Talkies

Can someone please suggest a good brand that we can use on the ship? We are a group of 12 and would like to communicate when not together. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Debbie - my suggestion is please do not use them at all. Most of them don't work well anyway because of the interference and thick steel walls, and the crackling and people shouting "What? What? I can't hear you!!" is incredibly disturbing to those around you who are enjoying some peaceful time on their vacation.

It is often recommended that you find other ways to keep in touch on board - a dry erase board works well, post-it notes, leaving messages on cabin phones, set a specific meeting time for meals or such, etc. You get the idea.

I realize a large group may be difficult to keep track of, but many groups and families do it cruise after cruise, without the annoyance of walkie-talkies.

I can see by the Low amount of posts here on CC, tht you're not aware of the NUMEROUS discussions on this topic. I would suggest doing a search of the threads here on CC to get your answers, as many of us have rehashed this topic till we're blue in the face with the pro's and con's of walkie talkies on a ship. Did you know your cabins phone has voicemail? or just bring a magnetic whiteboard and attach it near your cabin door ( inside as you don't want it stolen) Or even use Postit notes.

We have tried walkie-talkies before and not had good luck. Whenever we had a good number of decks between us, we would not be able to communicate.

Yes , often discussed topic here on CC. Do a search but be prepared for other suggestions as to how to communicate onboard without infringing on others

We have never had good luck with WT's. We have lost quite a few though.

The best way to "communicate" is to tell each other your coming plans...and that way, everyone knows where to find the others! Assuming you'll be eating dinner together, let everyone know what everyone else is doing the next day!

And frankly, finding each other isn't as hard as you're imagining...even tho the ship is huge, most of it is cabin space...you won't need to be searching those areas! Folks gravitate to the same public spaces over and over....you'll soon learn where everyone's favorite "spot" is! You can also leave messages on the cabin phones!

Walkie talkies MAY be illegal in some ports-of-call unless you have a local license so using them ashore might be very risky.

As previously report, use Post-it Notes, voice mail on ship's phones, or arranged meeting times. Unless you are on a mega-ship, finding someone should not be that difficult by just walking around the common areas.

I would look for another solution.

You will find that there are a limited number of areas where people will congregate. By planning in advance you should be able to find each other.

You can also leave notes on cabin doors.

Royal Caribbean passengers on Quantum and Anthem of the Seas (and Harmony and Ovation of the Seas when they launch in 2016) can use the Royal IQ app to call or text other passengers onboard the same ship, and also using Royal IQ. The app is free to download but the Royal IQ Communications Package (which enables the texting and calling) is $14.95 per device.

Get really really loud ones.

There are much better ways to communicate with others on board. But here's one more thing that hasn't been stated above: you really don't need to be in constant contact with the others in your party. As someone said, you can have a short meeting after looking over the newsletter about your plans, but maybe some in your party might want to have a time alone or to do something (say, a trivia match or a spa day) without the rest of your group around.

The last thing I want on a vacation is to be in 24/7 contact with 10 or a dozen other people.

100% agree.

We had to get permission from the Captain on Princess before carrying them and the only reason we did is because my wife is handicapped and can't get around. Ours are 25 watt FMs and barely worked at times so Am WTs won't work that well either.
