Oceania vs Celebrity

Btw, how does a new poster find a thread that's four years old?

If someone puts Oceania vs Celebrity (or vice versa) in a Google search, links to old CC threads will come up. It is probably the reason old threads get dragged up from time to time. As a test, I just tried the thread title as a google search and this thread was the first link found.

We are also Elite plus on X. We book AQ or Sky Suite cabins. My last 2 cruises on X were more than my last 2 cruises on Oceania. ( all in 2016 ) PH on one cruise on O and Extended Balcony on 2nd. If you shop the deals for Oceania they are about the same . Even better for included air from the West Coast.

Questions to all the recent 2106 posters.

Like many of the about have done many cruises with Elite Plus status on Celebrity. Agree the price point between the two lines is getting (using Oceania)is getting closer each booking.

We have booked are first Oceania have have some questions for you experience people with both lines.

Is there any BAD b4 location cabin.( I can't fine one)

If one gets free internet. Olife and 850 OBC, how does one burn thru all the extra monies. We don't need shore excursions,(cheaper independent), we rarely use spa or casino, no way to get OBC back in cash.

So if I pay gratuities that burns thru 360.(12 day cruise)

Is the Prestige upgrade of 20/pp/per day similar to classic to premium on Celebrity. Is there a price point limit on the Prestige package like in Classic/Premium ? (That burns another 480)We are totally fine have martinis on our veranda if we are allowed alcohol onboard.

Open to all comments. Thanks in advance.

Does Oceania have a similar experience like the World Bar or Martini bar.

Me again........I just read like in the old days of Celebrity that Oceania will charge you 3% for cash advance out of casino. Is this the best way to get the 480 back instead of burning thru drink package??????????

That is not correct. Perhaps you can get that for refundable OBC, but the Olife OBC is nonrefundable.

Your options for spending money is dependent on which ship you are on?

Why not choose "Cruise only" price (where available) - without O Life and all of its benefits.

Yes - this why I am confused about the earlier poster's big fare difference. We looked at Celebrity, HAL and Oceania for pretty much the exact same dates/itineraries a few years ago and O, at the bottom line "net daily rate" after all perks, was only about $300 more for both of us.

The numbers I shared earlier were for a 10 day Eclipse cruise in December and a 10 day Riveria cruise in January and everything I stated is accurate.

As I read and understood the drink packages,

Oceania, from their website, "House Select" allows "Unlimited Champagne, wine and beer with lunch and dinner from $39.95 per guest, per day", not afternoon cocktails, only with meals. Premium "Unlimited premium spirits, Champagne, wine and beer wherever and whenever you wish from $59.95 per guest, per day".

On Celebrity, from their website, "Throughout your cruise, choose from beers up to $6 per serving, spirits, cocktails, liqueurs and frozen drinks up to $8 per serving, and wine-by-the-glass up to $9 per serving. Plus, with purchase of this Classic Package, you can enjoy a 15% discount on all wines by the bottle purchased on board", $58 USD ($78 per night CAD). Premium is " our entire selection of fine craft beers, top-shelf spirits, premium cocktails and wines-by-the-glass up to $13 per serving. Indulge in unique craft cocktails, extra-large martinis, even liquid nitrogen-chilled cocktails." $65 USD ($88 CAD per night)

Also, when I stated prices in Post #67 to show the price difference, the prices were from the website yesterday. They were for equivalent cabins, not suites or penthouses. They did not include airfare....cruise only. The price difference is substantial.

There was something posted by Cruise Critic on Facebook today that really surprised me. I've always thought that Oceania was a "luxury" cruise line but on the FB posting CC described the proper dress code for each "luxury" line and Oceania wasn't included. Could it now be considered more main stream like Celebrity and HAL?

Oceania considers themselves "upper premium". In fact it's a category they pioneered.

I did the math today on a similiar itinerary between X and O. The O itinerary is far superior and a lot more days but comparing inside staterooms on both there was a $50 pd pp difference. Then take into consideration the $1,400 OBC I have with O and it drops to $10 a day then add in non alcoholic drinks and specialty dining and I'm miles ahead. This may not work once you go to veranda level but with no perks with X for an inside cabin, it's well worth going with O

In fact, I believe that Oceania and Azamara are the only 2 cruise lines in that category - sitting (or sailing :D) between mass market, premium and luxury.

It has never been a luxury line it was always a Premium line

Some TA's push them as Luxury

They may have some "luxury" features compared to some main stream lines

Exactly. Oceania is not "luxury" nor is it "main stream". It has deliberately placed itself inbetween.

But personally I'd say it is closer to luxury than mainstream ...

Thanks for doing the research. I was comparing suite to suite but it appears to work out in O's favor for inside cabins.

Looking forward to our first O cruise in January.

We are a former Celebrity customer who will try Oceania for the first time Sept 2017.

There is a substantial price difference in our Baltic trip between the 2 lines, Oceania is the higher priced incorporating so called perks; however, Oceania provides a much superior itinerary (Viking Homeland) to that of Celebrity - both 12 days, Oceania leaves and departs different ports and has 2 more ports to visit vs Celebrity.

We fired Celebrity last year because of their continued cheapening of the cruise product together with increased pricing and their obsessive fixation on guest class segmentation. We patronized Celebrity from 1992 to 2015. Our patronizing of Celebrity ended the first morning of our last trip when our room service breakfast tray contained a disgusting edible oil coffee creamer when previous half and half was provided. This very small thing encapsulated everything about the new Celebrity - cheapen, cheapen, cheapen.

So we will see how we like Oceania - product versus price.

In the end we are all fortunate to be able to cruise, but I am getting the impression that cruise lines think we are all mindless "obedient consumers" who will repeatedly book despite declining value - Celebrity is certainly operating that way.

Because of the low Canadian $. we have reduced our foreign travel by 75% - so the now few trips we take must be of good quality and offer good value.

Time will tell.

Good sailing to all

We have done several cruises on Celebrity and we have not noticed any decline in services. Granted -- we cruise mostly Oceania (11 under our belts and 5 more booked), and now Seabourn and Crystal too -- but we like Celebrity in the Caribbean where the itinerary is irrelevant and for unique itineraries elsewhere -- e.g. we are cruising in Oct 17 Tokyo to Shanghai (with stops in Japan and Korea) enabling us to do precruise Japan and post cruise full China trip. That itinerary is has been almost sold out for a while. We will be 4 couples, all of whom met on Oceania.

We only book top suites on Celebrity which cost much less than similar accommodations on Oceania. We have found service to be excellent, superb butlers, the specialty suite restaurant Luminae terrific and the food, in general, to be quite good. We love their specialty restaurants. We are elite so with the extra perks it is a bargain. The booking perks for our next 2 cruises were ridiculous (we booked on board) -- free internet, drinks, gratuities, substantial OBC -- and with what our TA adds to that it is really a bargain.

I imagine that those who have been regular Celebrity cruisers over the years may have noticed a decline, but for us it is still an option from time to time.

Superior itineraries are debatable but "a lot more days" does not, in any, way make equal comparison.

As I said in Post #67, I went to the websites of both lines and used the posted prices for equal day cruises and similar itineraries and veranda cabins (even used the higher Concierge class and Aqua class on Celebrity and not just typical veranda to 'equal" out a bit more), the prices were substantially different.

"Superior" itineraries is very debatable since as we have gotten older, a port- intensive itinerary has become a negative. Sea days are important to us as time to rest and relax between touring. We do not have the same energy as we once had and since I was ill days to rest are even more critical. If a cruise has no sea days, we try to create them by staying on board in a port we have visited before.

I also know people who hate sea days and avoid cruises with lots of sea days.

When we booked our Baltic cruise, we chose Celebrity over Oceania because the Celebrity cruise was longer and had more sea days. Had nothing to do with price. Glad we did that since the Baltics was one of the most exhausting cruise itineraries for us.

OMG

They are 2 different lines & you cannot compare

You can try to compare prices but since they have different styles of cabin categories where one line has segregated some passengers by the class of cabins you book ..how is it fair to even compare

You can compare itineraries but all other comparisons are a waste of time & energy

Pick the itinerary, pick the price you are willing to pay with the perks offered

Go & enjoy either line for what they do for you

I have no interest in cruise lines that have more than 1500 pax

so no matter the price I will not be on them

YMMV
