Mellow Colors – Ship Interior

Hi,

 

I’ve been on Norwegian and Carnival so far. Could someone please tell me which cruise lines tend to have “mellow colors” for the ship interior?

 

I think I’d prefer it over the bright colors.

OP - The two line syou have sailed are the ones whose ships tend to be the most colorful and over-the-top. I would avoid Costa as well. We love the modern, understated decor on Celebrity. Form what I have seen in pictures from Princess, they look great as well.

HAL's classic so-called "S" class ships are more like what you are seeking.

 

Maasdam in particular is decorated tastefully and understated. She is a lovely ship, roughly 50,000 ton carrying approximately 1250 guests.

OP, I agree with other posters that you started at the low end in regards to ship decor. I would call Carnival's typical decor "garish", reminiscent of a cheap Las Vegas casino or bordello. Celebrity, Princess and HAL would be much better choices for what you are looking for.

 

Celebrity's five S-class ships are very tastefully decorated in what might be called "modern elegance". Do a Google picture search on Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Silhouette, and the two month old Celebrity Reflection for a good idea of how these ships just might be what you are looking for.

We noticed that the decor on HAL's Rotterdam was refined and subtle- a little dark for some in one bar, but overall they'd used colours in a tasteful manner.

Also, HAL's Noordam. A wonderful ship. Very tasteful and often gets very high ratings from cruisers.

 

Maasdam and Noordam are our two favorite ships.

Noordam is larger at about 82,000 ton and carries about 1,900 guests. Very tastefully decorated with lovely art throughout, fresh flowers....... beautiful.

I will definitely agree with the lack of taste in some of the common rooms on some cruise lines, some ships (not all ships on all lines are created equal). I swear-to-gawd that one bar on a CCL ship (don't remember which one) had every possible finish/texture available. Mirror, bronze, glass, silver, paisley, stripes - it was like a Vegas home decor showroom had thrown up.

I have also enjoyed the more subtle decorating styles employed by HAL and X.

That being said, since I am not purchasing said ship, the decor is the least of my concerns when cruising. If a certain bar hurts my eyes, then I'll probably avoid it.

(I've found more style variance in the public area decor than in the stateroom decor.)

Princess is soothing. We sailed once on the Carnival Splendor, and it was a nice ship ... but the decor reminded me of an explosion in a Barbie factory. All pink and silver!

Definitely Celebrity ships woud meet the standard of soothing interior color schemes.

Best to visit the respective cruise line web sites and look at photos of the interior of their ships.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

HAL's "S" class ships are older -- check out the Signature or Vista class ships. Of those 6 ships, only one has awful colors -- Zuiderdam. The other 5 ships are beautiful and newer.

My description for Princess' decor is tasteful and relaxing .... using pastel colors and light woods.

Carnival is the worst. You will find more tasteful and subtle decor in the staterooms of newer ships like the Norwegian Epic, Breakaway and Getaway, Solstice-class on Celebrity and Oasis and Allure of the Seas.

I cannot stand Princess with that weird pink/peach color in the staterooms mixed with green/gray/blue.

The Disney ships are subtle. The Windstar ships are AMAZING since the refurb--very tasteful and subdued.

 

We've been on two RCCL ships (one for a cruise, one for a pre-sailing wedding) and found both to be pretty garish.

The Radiance class ships of RCCL are beautiful. IMHO the larger ships of RCCL (Voyager class, Freedom class and the Oasis and Allure) area not as beautiful. Also, Princess has lovely ships. Celebrity is a bit more "modernistic" in their style, but still lovely. Have not been on HAL, so can't comment on them.

I love your post because I felt the same after our first Carnival cruise. "Carnival" is an accurate description for their decor.

 

We just did our 2nd cruise on HALs Westerdam and it was very classy. Some of the pics seem garish, but that's with flash on a camera. In the lighting on the ship, the colors were great.

Oceania's Regatta and Nautica are lovely elegant ships. Princess Pacific and Ocean are the same.
