Smoking on Celebrity ships (especially on balcony cabins!)

Ok so I know that Celebrity has mostly non-smoking ships.... smoking is only allowed in designated areas and is not supposed to be allowed on balconies (for those staying in veranda staterooms).

 

Does anyone know how much this is actually enforced? Especially in regards to people smoking on their balcony? (and I realize that not all guests are as considerate as other guests, every neighbor is always a wild card...always have to factor that into the equation.)

 

Just curious as I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, and if people tend to break the rules in regards to their veranda staterooms, it would be enough to sway me from getting a veranda stateroom. Is this a reasonable worry or do the guests of Celebrity ships mostly stick to the rules regarding smoking in designated areas??

No smoking permitted on ALL X ships except in designated areas! The policy is enforced if violations are reported to Guest Relations. There are fines and the possibility of removal from the ship.

I've read here on CC that people have smoked on their balconies but I've never personally come across it, not on any of my cruises.

If you do decide on a balcony cabin, definitely stay away from the port side midship cabins on deck 6, as the smoking section is just below on deck 5. This is for the Solstice Class ships. I'm not sure about the others.

I too am sensitive to cigarette smoke. We've never had issues with it from other verandahs. We did have a cabin on port side deck 8 right above the deck 5 smoking area so I'd suggest that you go starboard if you're really sensitive. I was able to deal with it where I was but it was noticeable on a few occasions (mostly in port)

There are always people who think rules don't apply to them. We had people next to us on the balcony a couple cruises ago. I know that Celebrity tries to enforce the smoking policy because we had people dining with us last cruise who said they had received warnings and were now being threatened with being put off the ship and fined. I wasn't there for that conversation but my husband was telling me about it.

I called one morning because I smelled it on our last cruise. I'm quite sensitive to it.

 

The supervisor who came to my room to check it out said he would order te cabin stewards to look for products in the staterooms down the way as well as below me.

 

I saw one person smoking on deck 6 when we first boarded, called and never saw them smoking again.

The smoking policy is just one of the reasons I sail on Celebrity. No smoking in the casino either!

Since 2008 we have done two to four Celebrity cruises each year. We always book staterooms with verandas, and we have never personally observed any smoking violations, nor have we ever smelled smoke on our veranda. While I have read some reports of smoking violations on CC boards, I am happy to report that I have never personally observed a violation.

I didn't realize that there isn't smoking allowed on balconies or the casino.....but I am so happy!!! On our last cruise the person next to us was smoking on her balcony and it was horrible! I too am sensitive to the smoke. I said something to my husband about it and she must've heard me.....cuz she wasnt very happy! Oops!! I don't know what the rules were cuz I didn't ask, but maybe that is why it didn't happen again.....I am guessing that it wasn't allowed!!

One guy two cabins down was even leaning on the railing smoking a cigar. Despite calls to Guest relations there was smoking by one of our neighbours every day of the cruise. If a passenger is not visible and does not answer the door, it's tough to get "evidence" even when passengers are warned.

That is a HUGE plus. Never have I enjoyed a ships casino more than the Reflection.

It is not polite to look around the divider and take a picture of the offender. It's also impossible if the smoker is two balconies away. I will have my camera ready for the railing leaners however.

It's not polite to break the rules either. I say health and safety trumps the "privacy rights" of the illegal balcony smoker.

On our Feb cruise on the Constellation we had a aft balcony. There were at least two groups on the aft that were smoking on their balconies. Had no interest in reporting it as it doesn't bother me.

 

Also on the second part of our back to back there was a corporate group from General Cigar, a very large mulitnational cigar company that one evening held their get together on the pool deck. There was about 100 of them on this cruise. They were smoking cigars on the pool deck, apparently with management's blessing as this was the spot they were given to hold their event as the "designated cigar smoking area" would have been too small to hold all of them.

 

For the life of me I can't understand why a cigar company would book their corporate event on Celebrity. I also saw people smoking inside the TPool area. Apparently those in charge just didn't care.

Thanks for everyone's replies! It sounds like on some ships the no-smoking rule is enforced better than on others....but at least the ships are primarily no-smoking period. Good to hear about the casino too!

 

Would love to hear about more experiences regarding this! Also would love to know where the "designated smoking" areas are on other ships in the Celebrity line.... So as to avoid rooms near that area. Nothing worse than not being able to breathe (literally!!) in your own room!

Ie - on Reflection, the starboard side of the Sunset Bar was used by cigar smokers. Half a dozen cigar makers renders the entire area unpleasant IMO. also, the smoking area in the pool area was under cover near the sliding doors - best to avoid even walking through there!

On the whole, the ship is smoke free and a huge reason for us to sail with Celebrity.

I am supersensitive to smoke and was very worried about this last year. The only smokers I saw were in the designated smoking area, and when I walked past that, the gentlemen were kind enough to step away from people walking by so the smoke would not blow at them. I am reluctant to cruise any line other than Celebrity now because this was such a pleasant experience for me!

I agree completely. I would have no concerns or misgivings in taking a photograph for evidence. None! If you smoke next to my balcomy it is WAR! :eek:

Why not have the security person (or whoever responds) come to YOUR cabin to see/smell the smoking first-hand without tipping off the guilty party, instead of going to the guilty person's cabin first?

You meant port side right? We spent a week at the Sunset Bar sitting on the starboard side and the majority of the time we couldn't even smell the cigar smoke from the port side. Only once did we experience a cigar smoker on the wrong side but he was out by the rail and it didn't bother anyone. The Sunset Bar was the best spot on the ship smokers or not.

I was on Reflection for 3 nights in December and yes, the smoking

section was portside....I clearly remember because I had met a

very nice couple and he was a cigar smoker and he was always

in the "smoking section"....portside up at the Sunset Bar.

I love that bar too:D
