different prices on website for elite and platinum?

My wife and I were looking at upcoming California coastal type cruises. As an elite cruiser she was seeing a price of $298 pp for a particular cruise yet when I (a lowly platinum) looked at the same cruise I got a price of $398. I then logged on as her on my computer and got $298. When I logged on as me the price went back to $398.

 

Is this something new? I don't remember seeing this before.

I am not sure about Platinum vs. Elite pricing, but I have experienced price differences when logging in as both myself and as a relative that I plan travel for. We are both Platinum, but I wager in the casino and the other person does not, so apparently I am occasionally getting a casino rate.

 

I was told this by a Princess rep when I called to check on this difference once, and on the last Princess cruise I took "casino rate" was in fact mentioned in fine print in my cruise docs.

Princess sends targeted promotions to different guests. Depending on where you live, your gender, age, and other factors, you will get different pricing. My mom/sister gets better pricing, even though they have hardly cruised, and I don't get as many great offers (guess they figure I will book anyway, so why give me any incentives). :eek:

I have seen it go the other way too many times (Elite pricing higher than non-Elite). I consider it the Elite penalty. :(

I bet this is totally related to the current casino offer out there. Are you looking at a balcony cabin by chance? The discount is 25% off for a balcony which is pretty much what your difference is. Not everyone got the casino offer attached to their captain's circle number. I was one who got the casino offer and recently booked a short coastal for my Mom and I. She does not have the offer and is Ruby status but as I booked the cabin the rate it showed was at the 25% off for both of us. This is assuming you went all the way through the booking process to get the final price. If not, then it is a quirk with your status difference.

Neither of us gamble so, probably, not related to that. This is for an oceanview. The other difference between us is she's the one that books our cruises. Who knows?

With Princess, I've also found that a particular cabin I'm interested in is available when I first check, but then becomes unavailable the next time I log in. The next day, it's available again. I understand that someone else may have reserved it and then changed their minds, but it's happened so many times, that I don't think it's a coincidence.

What happens with cabins is that, if someone (a TA or an individual booking direct) chooses a particular cabin but then doesn't follow through to the point of getting a booking number (so the reservation is never completed), it ties up that cabin for a period of time (5 minutes? 10 minutes?). I've done that to myself many times; I start a booking, get distracted and then try to complete it and am told the cabin is not available. If I wait for a short while, I can book it again.

How long is it between your log ins?

 

When you check for pricing on a particular cabin, it puts a temporary hold on it for you. This prevents someone else from grabbing it while you complete a booking.

 

If you check back a short while later, it is still in that temporary hold, but does not recognize it is for you. Even a Princess phone agent can't get to it or determine it is on hold for you. You just need to wait for that hold you did not intend to have to expire.

Those who are new cruises or who don't cruise frequently tend to spend more money on board than those who sail multiple times a year. So perhapse they are marketing to those who are more likely spend.

I agree, or for those who don't already have another Princess cruise booked. Ever since I first discovered that this happens (we have a widowed friend who had been on one Princess cruise and always wanted us to provide her pricing on one so she could join us) I check this all the time. In at least 50% of the cases, her cruise would cost her less (adjusting for the single supplement) than ours does. I wonder. if she had just a couple of Princess cruises under her belt, but had eleventy dozen booked like we do, how her pricing would compare.

It has been happening to my knowledge in the UK for a few years I had an e-mail from Princess advertising a Round Britain cruise from Southampton so we booked it. I mentioned on another cruise forum what a great deal was available and another forum member was keen so tried to book it and was different price online he phoned Princess and it transpired that I had been sent that deal because I was Elite and he couldnt book it at that price because he wasnt.

I've never imagined this could happen (we are equal at Platinum - same nights and trips). I'll have to try it sometime, but this time we booked a TA deal waaay better than Princess, so some other time, perhaps.
