Kids & Bars

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Quick question: can children sit in bar areas on Voyager such as Pig & Whistle?

This isn't a "sit down and get blotto" situation, I'm just thinking of evenings post-dinner where we may want to have a drink and listen to entertainment.

As always, any info greatly appreciated.

That won't be an issue.

Kids can go anywhere with you other than the casino. Some shows, especially later at night, may not be kid appropriate, but that is usually noted in the cruise compass. On Oasis class ships kids are not allowed in the comedy club. Regular bars etc. are okay.

We had our kids (4 and 8) in the pig and whistle a few times during the week for 15 minutes or so (a drink). Most of the time it was when the kids club was closed as they much preferred being there when it was open!!

They ordered Shirley Temples with their soda packages!

the lounges are open to everyone. However children should not be sitting at the bar itself.

I've never heard this before. What is the difference where a child sits? Is it a safety issue as the bar chair might be higher than a standard chair or may be a stool and therefore not have a back?

Thanks,

M

I'm not sure if it is a rule on RCCL but some states do not permit children to sit at the bar. Sitting at a table is generally ok and definately ok on the ship. Personally I think children sitting at the bar is tacky.

But kids - who don't understand why sitting at the stools at the counter would ever be considered tacky - think it's a pretty cool treat to do it! We didn't sit at the bar on our cruise - but my kids have certainly sat at the bar in a variety of bars and restaurant bar area for drinks or dinner and drinks! If you want a seat - get there earlier or wait until we are through if we have elected (or been recommended by the hostess) to sit there!

Kids might think it it cool to sit at a bar but adults should know better.! Plenty of room for kids to sit at tables in bars. I consider the bar area to be an "adult" area. If a parent lets their kid sit at the bar then that is their prerogative. However, I will not curb any "adult" conversations or language that I wish to have if kids are in the bar area either!

atmosphere and adult conversations AT the actual bar. and yes many states do NOT allow children to sit at the bar even if the restaurant is 'family friendly'

we had a great place back in MD had a free standing bar with additional seating that was somewhat separated from the main dining room. parties with children were NOT seated in the area with the bar, not even the booths.

some places are not appropriate for children to be at . seated AT the bar (anywhere, land or sea) is one of them. there is plenty of room for them in the rest of the lounge where they can enjoy the entertainment or their Shirley temples.

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone - it's much appreciated. It's good to know that I can have the kids with us, I'm not a fan of leaving them in the rooms if I can help it and like I said, it wouldn't be for long.

On a couple of your points:

. our kids will be 11 and 12 when we cruise and there's no way that I would have them sitting at the bar. If I'm sitting having a quiet drink with my husband or friends, the last thing I want is kids sitting there.

. thanks for the tip about the Shirley Temples on the soda package - I would never have thought of that and they'll feel extra special with the mocktail.

. and another question from one of the responses: what's the glow party?

Thank you again :)

Because it gives the impression the child is being served alcohol.

Sorry don't know what a glow party is either:)

I would just like to say you sound like a responsible parent.

Nothing wrong with the kiddos sitting with the parents at a table for an after dinner drink/ Shirley temple.

Enjoy your cruise

A "glow party" (which is also called a white party) is where you wear all white and they sell glow stick jewelry and such and the have a black light dance party at one of the bars or clubs. I've read on cruise critic that some of the Royal Caribbean ships have it one night during the week.

I'd say this is a weak argument... What's the difference between this and a minor walking up to the bar asking for a soda . (I've see this on all my cruises.)

A better argument COULD be made that the bar area is for adults just "because", however there is no policy to that effect. (

I'm afraid this discussion will soon enter "dress code" territory, where every one has their opinion, and hardly any one changes their mind :-)

Aloha,

John

Wow, this is interesting to me. As an adult I've only sailed Disney and Holland America - will sail Royal Caribbean in about a month and a half. Never saw kids in the bars or lounges I was in on Holland, and Disney turns the entertainment district to 18 and over ofter 9pm (and honestly other than the "family entertainment" room, I didn't really see kids back there anyway). It never occurred to me that people might have their kids out and in the lounges and bar areas.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the running group I'm cruising with won't be curbing our conversations just because there are kids around - be it around the bar or in the lounge area. We didn't curb the conversation in non-lounge areas last year on Holland America and definitely didn't in the bars and lounges.

Kids - in my humble opinion - should not sit AT the bar- taking space away from an adult - its an adult area where alcohol is served. Actually in NJ I believe it is illegal for anyone under the allowable age of consumption to sit at the bar where alcohol is served. And....its just respectful to give the adult the seat - I know I know - old fashion.

sorry....can't agree with you - but your certainly entitled to your opinion. Children are not of age to consume - they shouldn't be sitting at a bar where patrons who will spend the money can be - and its rude. OK - let the flames begin.
