Officers visiting the Diamond Lounge

I've only been Diamond for about a year, and spending time in the Diamond Lounge is still new to me.

I was surprised, and very pleased, to see that during one evening while I was in the Diamond Lounge on Liberty of the Seas last week, three different officers (financial officer, executive chef, and guest services officer) stopped by (at separate times) and visited with people in the lounge. Each of them took several minutes to chat with us.

I really, really liked the personal interaction with the officers and greatly appreciated their presence in the lounge. In past cruises when I've been in the Concierge Lounge, I've not seen this before. Is it something unique to the Diamond Lounge, or is it not that common in general?

As an aside, during my conversation with the executive chef, I think he was suggesting that there were new main dining room menus coming next year after Liberty of the Seas' drydock. We had a slight language barrier/miscommunication, though, so I may have misinterpreted what he was saying and instead he may have meant simply that the new restaurants coming to Liberty of the Seas next year will bring new menu items to the ship.

Visiting officers to Diamond and Concierge Lounges varies from ship to ship.

I agree, it does seem to vary with ship. And we have seen officers stopping by the Diamond Lounge more frequently than in the CL.

We have been visited by ships officers in the CL and DL on most if not all cruises. This has included the Captain but mostly the Hotel Director and members of his staff. Also have met Singers and Dancers while they were making appearances in the lounge just to say hello.

Most engage in conversation with the guests in the lounge. Others just do grips and grins and move on.

On Oasis last November, the Captain visited the Diamond Lounge and went out of his way to talk to the people in there. It was very nice to see him there, considering that I missed the Captain's Welcome Party (where I probably would not have seen him, anyway.)

Ships where the Officers visit the CD & DL often seem to be "happier" ships.

I noticed this on our Radiance cruise. The crew members that we interacted with were happy and cheerful, more so than any other cruise we have been on.

We had the pleasure of meeting the Captain in the CL. This is the only cruise where we saw an officer in the CL. I agree that it shows an interest in the passengers.

Next year when we will be Diamond when we sail on the Liberty. It will be interesting to see whether officers drop by the DL then. I hope so. It is always interesting to chat with them.

One night on my recent cruise (Anthem), some officers came into the Diamond Club and started talking to the guests. They also stopped at our place and not only did some small talk, they also asked specific things about the ship e.g. what we like, what we think about the service so far etc. and also made notes on what we told them.

Great idea to me!

My experience with officer visits has been the intermittent variety... on some ships more than others. Seems I have seen the hotel director or one of his top assistants drop by for a few words with those in the lounge. On a few occasions, the cruise director and the captain as well.

Very nice touch:).

The captain visited the DL several times on Grandeur last summer (Bermuda cruise) and stayed for a decent amount of time chatting with guests. On the Brilliance this past July we got visits from the captain, hotel director and first officer in the Concierge Lounge.

My husband is going to kill me for telling this story, but.....:p

Many years ago while we were cruising on Mariner, we were have a nice evening at what was then Portofino's. An officer came to our table and asked how we were enjoying our meal. We chatted for a few, and when the officer left my husband asked "Who was that? The headwaiter?" I said, "Uh, no, that was the captain." We got a kick out of that one.

I'm torn. Sometimes it's disruptive. I've enjoyed it a few times, but definitely hit or miss on the quality of the visit. I like to play table games in the casino with the officers dealing. That's fun. It's really fun to tip them. And they buy rounds of drinks.
