Major storm heading to Bermuda

 Share

Recommended Posts

I just read on the Celebrity boards that Summit is leaving Bermuda at 5:00 today instead of tomorrow due to gale force winds expected to hit Bermuda.

I know that Breakaway is still there, but I haven't heard yet if they will also be leaving soon.

Captain Kate on Summit is doing the right thing for her passengers and her ship. Good luck and safe travels to everyone.

Celebrity also got in to port on Tuesday instead of Wednesday this week. I have to wonder if that is why they left early.

A passenger onboard Summit stated that the Captain made an announcement last evening to inform everyone of the impending storm and then today about leaving early due to the high winds expected. Summit arrived on Tuesday late day due to a medical situation onboard.

That BDA webcam at Dockyard is picking up the audio - you can hear the wind whistling, it's now blowing from the north at 25 miles & increasing.

Looks like BA is not sailing this evening and if it is, nobody has posted the news and the narrow channel with the coral reefs isn't easy for the mega ships - remember the Dawn getting stuck last year - with the changing tidal tables, the timing has to be planned ... BA can't just pull up the gangways & go (and, don't they have the pilot boat doing the escort out to St. George's)

Should be interesting to watch the action tomorrow - presumably, most of the BA pax will return to the ship at some point tonight, however late & be advised on an early departure - at the risk of leaving some pax behind if that stay on the island & not returning to the ship until tomorrow for the sailaway.

It's never too early or late in the stormy season for a storm to head deep into the Atlantic, the U.S. mainland has been getting hit lately while our neighbors well north of the border in Alberta are running for their lives, literrally due to wildfire, still burning out of control.

My guess is the decision to sail early was driven by a new policy at RCCL (Celebrity's parent company) that was adopted after the RCI's Anthem of the Seas sailed right into the teeth of a storm a few months ago.

I couldn't agree more. BTW, I was on that voyage on Anthem of the Seas. Those teeth were sharp. Never so scared in my life.

I keep looking at the Bermuda weather to find this storm, and it's just not there. The winds are supposed to make out at around 30mph, the problem is that it is supposed to rain cats and dogs for the next 48 hours.

Thanks to OP for letting us know. We have some family members flying to NY this weekend to board the Breakaway. Hopefully the current passengers have a safe trip back.

We are also on this sailing and hoping all goes well and everyone is OK. Breakaway is a huge ship, so probably would fare well tied to the pier during a storm.

She's still there this morning. Not much outdoor activity going on. :)

I don't cruise on NCL, but came over here to see what BA was doing after I saw Summit was leaving. You need to check the port cam right now. It's pouring and the wind is howling. So, they stayed in port, but can't get off and do anything. I just don't see the point of sitting at the pier all day. I hope they don't regret doing so considering getting out of the Dockyard port can be a challenge.

Last I heard, the storm was supposed to last all day, so we'll see how that impacts them leaving.

Definitely not a day for doing anything outdoors! :( I hope everyone on board is enjoying the ship!

I don't understand the people questioning the BA's captain. The storm is coming off the US coast, so he would've sailed directly into it anyway. I would rather stay docked and ride it out rather than bounce around in the sea.

Severe Weather warnings were cancelled. Small craft warnings for small boats. Temps of 74 with scattered thunderstorms. Winds are moderate. Anyone with an umbrella would do fine today. Leaving early heads the ship directly toward where the storm is moving. Staying in port seems prudent.

If you check the portcam, there is no one walking on the pier.

As for questioning them staying, it's not about sailing into the storm, but trying to sail out DURING the storm. That reef has been an issue for ships in lesser weather.

The weather may not be as bad as predicted, but that was a gamble.
