Cunard Single Staterooms

Hello,

First post here, planning my very first longer cruise. I've done some 1-night ones before, but now I'm looking at something more serious. I've fallen for the Transatlantic Crossing with Cunard, and as I will be travelling alone I'm looking for a single stateroom to avoid the singe occupancy fees.

However, they seem to be sold out. On every single sailing, even if I look a year ahead. I'm planning to go late this summer or early autumn and preferably westbound. I know they are limitied and highly popular, but is that right? Anything wrong with the booking site, any other way to book? Confused!

If the booking site you refer to is not the Cunard website, try there. Or try calling Cunard (or a cruise specialist travel agency) and talk with them directly to see what they are showing. They would be able to see the complete inventory available. If the answer still is the same then I guess the are booked solid in advance.

Note also that while most cruise lines - and I would guess that Cunard is the same - don't charge the typical double occupancy rates for their designated solo staterooms, the rate is still a premium over the standard individual rate for double occupancy staterooms. But it still would be a lower rate than having to pay the the normal single occupancy rates.

Good luck - hope it works out for you.

OP is looking for something that does not exist. Cunard trans-Atlantics means Queen Mary 2 - which does not have single staterooms. The single supplement may be anywhere from 50% to 100% of the quoted per person fare. If he is willing to risk not sailing, he can wait until a couple of weeks before sailing date to see if there are cuts - otherwise, he needs to bite the bullet an book the best deal he or his travel agent can find.

Did not know that about Cunard - thanks. Was just responding to their post, from which it seems as though they think they are offered. All the more reason to contact Cunard!

Single occ. cabins were added @ the 2016 drydock of the QM2.

Category KB & KC oceanview .

They are priced less than what a 200% single supl of a standard dbl occ cabin would be but still very pricy .

There are not many of them and they seem to be grabbed up as soon as sailings are posted . Other than booking very early , watch for cancelations and released group allotments just before final payment .

Also , more info can be followed @ the Cunard Forum here on CC.

Thanks for the update and clarification. Sounds like their pricing policy is similar to that of other cruise lines with similar stateroom categories.

That's right...cabin prices are based on DOUBLE occupancy...so double the "per person" cost, and that's what the cabin costs....each cabin is up to 2 people! If you think of it like hotel pricing, it's not so odious. The cruise lines do a bad job with pricing. Folks think 1 person will pay the "per person" price, but that's not the case. Come to terms with it.

CB you are incorrect again when referencing the pricing for designated solo staterooms, which is the topic of this thread. While they still command a premium, they are not priced at double occupancy rates as - obviously - they are solo stateroom categories.

Please, please, please stop answering threads with incorrect information. If you are not certain of the answer you are providing, please just don't answer. I say this primarily for those on this board in particular who may not be familiar with your many, many incorrect posts as I also know you will not be back to the thread a second time to read this!

Yeah, it's still pretty odious, since it's not just a hotel - it's a hotel, restaurant, lounge, bar, and entertainment venue. If it was just a hotel room, it wouldn't be a big deal. While a solo passenger may take the same cabin space as two, that person does not eat twice as much food, take up 2 seats in the showroom, or create twice as much laundry. Of course, they also don't spend twice as much at the bar or in the casino, LOL.

Was not aware - there were no singles when we sailed QM2 in 2011 and 2015 - good to know.

The old venerable QE2 had solo cabins. Their rate was 150% of the fare for a regular cabin. And they were very tiny. I saw one on a cabin crawl...The floor space was not much wider than the bunk, with a desk across and closet at the foot, leading into the bath. Speculation was that they were intended for servants.

QM2 has 15 of the solo OV cabins. EM

Most cruise lines will charge a 200% single supplement for anything other than a solo stateroom. Occasionally they will offer a lower supplement as a sale.

Single staterooms are becoming more popular. I didn't know about Cunard but Norwegian offers them on select ships and celebrity is offering them on their newest ships. I have read that there are often only a small number of staterooms allocated as singles and they do sell out fast. But if you are selecting a sailing that doesn't show single rooms available far in the future, do make sure that the single rooms are offered on that ship.

  • 3 weeks later...

I would suggest looking at Silver Sea Cruises. Wonderful for solo travelers. A number of cruises are 25 % more for solo cruisers. The ships are small. The staterooms are normal size. The food and service is outstanding! There are usually gentlemen hosts for dancing and to be dinner partners. The transatlantic Spring and Fall cruises are very good value. I am going on my third one in a row this November and have selected my cruise for 2018. These cruises are all inclusive. There may be bridge lessons, culinary demonstrations, and good enrichment programs featuring interesting speakers. No, I don't work for Silver Sea!

Cunard charges solo travelers 175% on interior, ocean view, and balcony staterooms - only the suites carry 200%. A number of times I have seen a double occupancy ocean view with the single supplement to be the same or less than one of the single staterooms. Always check both types before you book!
