A Sixth? Posted December 16, 2017 #27 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Celebrity can not deny you the basics, like food and a place to sleep. My question is if they would be confined in a cabin? Of course they do not go to the show at night or to the casino. I have a few friends in the sailing community who have literally "sank" and were rescued by ship. In one case a Carnival ship in the Caribbean when they hit a partially submerged container in the Anegada Passage. They were treated as first class passengers for their short stay as one would except.
LuAnn Posted December 16, 2017 #28 Share Posted December 16, 2017 A friend of mine is also on this cruise and posted a video of the rescue on FB...the seas were pretty rough and it took a couple of tries for the tender to off load the passengers. Thank goodness the ship came along! LuAnn

Of course they do not go to the show at night or to the casino. In this day and age they could be anyone, so I'm sure the crew are following strict security protocols as to where they're housed etc. But I'm also sure they'll get first class medical care and will be very well cared for until they can be disembark to begin their journey home. I'd be very surprised if they were allowed to visit passenger areas unaccompanied. That said, in their position I guess they'd just want to contact loved ones and rest as it will have been a very traumatic experience for them. caroleknc Posted December 17, 2017 #33 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Sea day as we sail towards Curacao today. About two hours ago Captain Kate advised that we were diverting course to rescue a vessel in distress with a medical emergency. Just spent two hours watching the ship idle towards a stricken yacht and one of our lifeboats launch and rescue six people. I'll try and post pictures and video later if the internet speed is quick enough. Everyone was rescued and all appear ok. The Celebrity staff were not too impressed when one of them tried to bring their suitcase along and basically told them to get onboard and leave everything! All credit to the staff in an emergency, they acted like true professionals. Their yacht has been abandoned and is currently bobbing about next to us! What ship are you on? Of course they do not go to the show at night or to the casino. Generally allowed run of the ship- it's not like they're criminals. Was aboard QE2 in the '90s and rescued a small sailing yacht- they were given Queens Grill accommodations and were betting $2000 a hand black jack that night in the casino in tuxedos Cunard loaned them. As long as you give them a credit card you can pretty much do whatever you want until you get off at the next port.
cruise47 Posted December 17, 2017 #37 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Great story and rescue. So basically they were allowed to come onboard the ship; probably with basic ID and the clothes that they were wearing. Correct and their medications if any. What is the Celebrity MS Summit GPS location to her next port and how far is it in nautical miles. Will these six (6) individuals have to reimburse Celebrity for their rescue later? Another question what happen to the sailboat/yacht in International waters and theirs personal belonging left behind?
chengkp75 Posted December 17, 2017 #38 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Since the boat is abandoned, it is fair game for salvage. Whoever can board her owns her and everything on board.

Mynki Posted December 17, 2017 Author #40 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Captains update confirmed :- 3 men and 3 women, two of which are pregnant were aboard. They set sail on November 15th from Haiti to Guadaloupe and shortly afterwards had issues with their rudder. They ran out of food and water 7 days ago surviving on fish and rainwater. Other vessels did pass them but did not realise they were in distress. Maybe they had no flares? They will be processed by immigration here in Curacao today so they can make arrangements to travel home. Celebrity provided medical care, food, water, clothing and cabins. A couple of French speaking crew members spent extra time acting as translators and providing support etc. The captain of the boat advised that they had agreed to jump into the water at 2 pm yesterday if they were not rescued, to take their chances. How lucky were they!!!

They set sail on November 15th from Haiti to Guadaloupe and shortly afterwards had issues with their rudder. That explains how they were "stranded" in a sailboat. It would be interesting to know that the problem with the rudder was. Given the choice between life and death, I'm thinking I would be under the boat either repairing the rudder or sailing under partial sail in a straight line to the nearest port. I wasn't there, though, so it's easy to speculate what one might do in that situation.
GottaKnowWhen Posted December 17, 2017 #42 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Very odd boat. As a life-long sailor and as one who sailed the Caribbean for years on his own "yacht" (plastic pail is really closer to the truth ;p ) I have to say that there's a lot to this story that I'd love to hear.... They have been at sea and mostly adrift (broken rudder) since Nov 15. My guess only, but looks like they took the main sail’s boom and have it set up front so as to rig shelter? In any case, without food for last week, only sparse rain water. The boat was taking on water and expected to sink soon. Other ships sighted but ours the first to respond. The six persons brought aboard, fed, treated for exhaustion etc., relatives back home informed, supplied with money and clothes (from the Summit’s crew) and will disembark today in Curaçao. No reimbursement- vessels are obligated rescue mariners in distress and provide them aid. I'm sure they would charge for anything above that like a bar tab but they're obligated by law to provide accommodation, med, and food just as any other vessel would for Summit if she were in distress or wrecked. Mynki Posted December 17, 2017 Author #44 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Interesting game of Chinese whispers last night. :) We were told by a fellow passenger that there was a child rescued despite DW and I clearly seeing only six adults walk off the lifeboat onto Summit. Rumours obviously started when people realised two of the ladies were pregnant.

In Toronto Posted December 17, 2017 #47 Share Posted December 17, 2017 A friend if mine is on this sailing and will be anxious to share this story with me as she was very interested a couple of years ago to hear of the ship we were on rescuing 7 Cubans in distress on basically a raft on our way to Grand Cayman. It was very interesting to watch the rescue from our balcony in the dark in a rain storm. Fortunately they were also okay. Must be a harrowing experience!
