ginger123snaps Posted February 20, 2018 #26 Share Posted February 20, 2018 We stay on every time in Nassau.....not interested! Hope they change the port on my June 23rd sailing!
CTBob Posted February 20, 2018 #27 Share Posted February 20, 2018 Nassau probably will stay on the itinerary until Ocean Cay is open. Unfortunately that has been delayed again until October of 2019. Once Ocean Cay is open I will book the Seaside again. Bob
bluefish17 Posted February 20, 2018 #28 Share Posted February 20, 2018 Those dire warnings are issued frequently. Nothing new. I would not be at all concerned. We went to Nassau on Seaside last month and nothing appeared any different than in previous visits (we have had Nassau as a port of call at least 5 times). We walked around the shopping district, made the hike to Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle, had a very nice lunch in town and made it over to Junkanoo Beach and I was not murdered once. ;p;p Nassau is a practical port for cruises (its practically in Florida) and has very reasonable port fees. That all may be true but I recall that a few years ago, Carnival passengers were robbed at gunpoint while on a Segway tour in downtown Nassau. That doesn't usually happen in most ports. So many walk off the ship in Nassau, walk through 3-4 tee shirt shops, and claim that there is nothing to see here! We've been to Nassau probably 15 times, and have usually found something to do for the day. If nothing else, we take a short stroll down the waterfront to Senor Frog's and enjoy a cool drink overlooking the water and the ship. ...Like mentioned above, some of the things to do are the Queen's Staicase, Fort Fincastle, the Pirate Museum, Graycliff Cigar Factory, Atlantis resort, a short walk to Junkanoo Beach, and the infamous Straw Market. Also, there is the beautiful, brand new Baha Mar Resort and Casino on Cable Beach, just a short taxi ride from port. Great new casino and restaurants. Lots to do in Nassau. That doesn't usually happen in most ports. So one crime a few years ago should impact people's decisions? And robberies against tourists happen anywhere there are lots of tourists. Not at all unique to Nassau. I'll take Nassau over large parts of Chicago, Baltimore or a whole host of American cities any day.

Linda the Book Lover Posted February 20, 2018 #33 Share Posted February 20, 2018 We have a long wait until our cruise but having been to Nassau we decided we would just relax on the ship. No worries about safety as things happen everywhere. Though if next year they go to Grand Turk I will be thrilled!

NMsunset Posted February 20, 2018 #36 Share Posted February 20, 2018 None of the islands are worthy of fear, do the math folks, the ride from the airport to the Port of Miami is your highest risk of injury....that or going to school, church, or Vegas concert... Relax, we are on a cruise vacation...our lives are good! If the ports of call are important, book the cruise with the ports of your liking. Cheers! dsj22 Posted February 20, 2018 #37 Share Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) My travel insurance provider was vague, but said that if I travel to a country with a known travel advisory or warning and need to make a claim, the claim could be denied. Has this been an issue for anyone? Edited February 20, 2018 by dsj22
spidybabe Posted February 20, 2018 #38 Share Posted February 20, 2018 Been to Nassau many times. No worse than any other port, or being back home in NY. No matter what port you are at, you should never let your guard down and always be aware of your surroundings. Many things to see and do in Nassau. We love walking to Greycliff manor-beautiful grounds, pool, lunch, cigar rolling, chocolate factory then down the street to John Walting rum factory. Another stop at the straw market and a stop at a local place for the best meat patties. Safe sailing Sent from my SM-N950U using Forums mobile app
Rare BermudaBound2014 Posted February 20, 2018 #39 Share Posted February 20, 2018 Many ships have an obligation to stop in the Bahamas as their ships are registered there. MSC I believe is registered in Panama, so no obligatory stop. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Interesting! I'm going to look that up. I thought most ships stopped in Bahamas (Freeport or Nassau) to unload their garbage. There was an article published in one of the cruise magazines I follow that stated garbage per ton was cheaper to offload in Bahamas. Either way, Turks is HUGE SCORE for anyone traveling Seaside!!! :)

I'll take Nassau over large parts of Chicago, Baltimore or a whole host of American cities any day. It's not just one incident. It's just that the visual image of a couple of guys jumping out of the bushes with guns to rob a Segway tour of cruise ship passengers is stuck in my mind. Like the missing school teacher tourist raped and murdered on Cabbage beach on paradise island and the many women (including minors) sexually assaulted on jet ski tours. You are correct it is indeed similar to bad areas in many large US cities. That's what people need to know. That it's like being in downtown Baltimore is similar cities. Either way, Turks is HUGE SCORE for anyone traveling Seaside!!! :) We used to sail Disney exclusively and asked why they always stop in Nassau when there are so many other places that would be more family friendly and safe. We were told many times that they stop there because they are registered there and owe it to the country. Now, maybe being obligated and feeling obligated are two different things, but DCL definitely feels they are obligated to stop when in the Bahamas. Since jumping ships (pun intended) to other lines, we haven’t been to Nassau! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

We usually walk to the restaurants at the fish fry, and then wend our way back along Junkanoo beach, stopping at various vendors for a beer or fruity drink. The vendors are all trying to make a subsistence living, but a smile and a no thank you is all it has ever taken. And they have happily and politely given us directions when asked.
