Can someone explain the benefit of the medallion to me as the customer?

Very true' date=' but they will need fewer employees to handle those who don’t choose to use the newer technology.

For many people, there needs to be a benefit to using technology (or cost for not using it) to get them to use it. Being able to bypass lines and save time is one benefit. I can also see the cruise lines going the way of many airlines to encourage people to use the technology - adding a fee for seeing an actual person to check in, etc.

Many won’t like these changes, but they have the choice - use the automated processes or pay to see an actual person. Of course many will choose another cruise line, which is also their option. But ultimately, we pay for using additional services in either higher fares upfront or by per-use fees. Nothing is free.

What is with all the people thinking they will be "tracked" in the bathroom? It's not anywhere near that granular. Yes, they can, if desired, see if you are in your cabin. That's it. Princess has no interest in your bathroom habits. There is no reason to get freaked out about the medallion.

Agree....it always seems to me that many Princess posters on CC are usually against ANYTHING that Princess does that has not always been done before in the past or was the norm......Change is going to happen and you can jump and down and scream about it or chill and embrace it....:)

I agree that cost saving solutions are important to the cruiser as well as to the cruise line.

Part of the idea of the health form is that it needs to be completed before the guest boards the ship so that if a further screen is needed' date=' this can also be completed before the ship is "contaminated." Again, I'm sure this is a simple hurdle to overcome. [/quote']

They could just not use the health forms and use infra red scanners to detect passengers who are running temperatures and then deny them boarding until they are further interviewed. We have seen these scanners used in Japan and Korea....

Scanned in many airports world wide as you get off plane.

Here is a thought, what if the medallion changed colours if you have a fever, like to old mood rings from the 1970's

Ahhhhhhh...... The mood ring. Remember: When she's in a good mood it turns green. When she's in a bad mood it leaves a big red mark on your forehead.

Medallions accidentally going for a "swim" will become a whole new issue. Back in the old days of "beepers' date='" this was a fairly common problem. People would wear them on waistbands and ....woops...[/quote']

We were told you can wear them in the water.

Now why would you take it off in the bathroom?? It may activate the flush button for you.

Now with just this feature it would be a great thing. My thoughts of the ***** (Toilet Flush Sound).. :o :D.

Funny...hubby said he would leave his in the bathroom. Princess would assume he was there the entire trip!

How do you get one and what is the price?

Are you asking about the medallion?

Book a cruise and choose a cabin in the area that's testing it.

Or are you asking about the "temperature scanner"?

Amazon is your friend...as are Google and most pharmacies.

Or are you asking about something else?

Not likely. They could tell, if they cared to check, that the medallion was in the cabin somewhere but that's it.

But why is change fear more prevalent on Princess board more than other boards?

They are sealed and yes, they can be worn in the water.

Not that Princess would even care if someone never came out of their stateroom and only opened the door to let the steward and room service enter. While Princess can track the *****'s location, they would only do it if they were concerned about a pax that has been reported missing, overboard or had not returned to the ship after a port call. Other than that all Princess uses pax location is as a statistic to determine traffic patterns and general pax activities on the ship. It is part of data archiving which they use to mine the data to determine trends. This has been around for decades. All large successful business does it.

There is actually a sensor mounted to the wall in the bathroom.

The program also depends on the use of a smartphone for the "premium experience" of the Ocean Medallion. Being techo savvy. it's so no problem. I do see a problem for those cruisers who don't have smartphones or choose to unplug for their vacation.

A smartphone is not required.

To utilize features other than checking onto/off of the ship, making purchases and unlocking your cabin door, you just need a digital device which does not have to be a cell phone. It can be any of the hundreds of screens that the ships are having installed for this purpose or even your interacting TV in your cabin.

There is no longer a need for a slot for key cards with the newer systems. Most hotels I have stayed at have eliminated the slot and you just place the card near the door and it opens. Hilton properties now have a Digital Key built Into the Hilton Honors app. You check in using the App, pick your room, choose digital key and use your phone to open your room door. There is no need to stop at the desk when checking in or checking out. I love it.

But in most Hiltons you do not have to show a passport in order to check in. For cruises you need to show a passport (or for closed loop cruises, a certified birth certificate along with a gvt issued photo ID).

Princess has said there will be a sensor in the bathroom. That is why people think they will be tracked there.

You do not have to have a temperature to be sick. With, for example, the flu, you can be contagious before exhibiting any symptoms or even after symptoms have gone away.

The basic reason for the health form is to determine (if filled in honestly) if you are bringing noro aboard.

The temperature scanners you have seen in some Asian airports were trying to detect active flu cases.

One benefit for some people has not been mentioned in this thread.

With the other person's permission, you can locate that person if you need to. Examples:

a) Husband wanting to meet up with wife but does not know where she is at the moment.

b) Parent wanting to locate their teenager

Quite true. (One can also turn off that feature if requested so that only Princess can use location.) I wouldn't mind it at all. Sometimes it would be nice to see if my wife was still at the Knitters and Natters meeting before setting out across the ship to find her only to discover she left and we've crossed paths somewhere. I certainly don't mind if she has the ability to see where I am on the ship.

I agree! It is great! Select your room on your IPhone and technically check in before you get to the hotel. Your phone lets you know when your room is ready. Hassle free after a long trip. Just say hello as you walk by the front desk! Put your phone up to the sensor on the door to your selected room and you are in! Sweet!

Once fully operational, there are quite a few advantages to the Medallion.

You'll be able to bypass check-in and go directly to security and board the ship at embarkation.

Your cabin door will automatically unlock as you approach it and re-lock after leaving.

It won't demagnetize.

You'll be able to receive notifications of fresh foods in the IC and elsewhere.

You'll be able to make spa, specialty restaurant and other reservations on your device 24/7. You can get a massage in your cabin, for instance.

Your drink packages will be automatically recognized by your server.

You'll be able to automatically review ship photos of yourself on your device.

You'll be able to play casino, bingo, and trivia games and scavenger hunts on your device.

And more...

You'll be able to turn options on and off. And, you'll have the option of not using the Medallion and using a cruise card if you wish but then you won't have access to these benefits. And they are benefits.

All I can say is wow, big deal... glad I will be cruising the Grand...don't need them.
