2008 Sapphire Princess - Puerto Vallarta was an armed camp, in Mazatlan the cartel had recently murdered the mayor of a suburb on the beach, Cabo San Lucas had possibly the rudest, pushiest vendors in our experience. After 10 years we are only just now comfortable with a cruise to the eastern side.

i disagree. Several cruise lines goes to Sweden and I posted on NCL and RCI for that reason. I don't find the ports of call threads very active.

I have seen the same subject on various cruise lines. Some folks on RCI don't read NCL or vice versus.

Sorry about that

The majority here don't care what's going on in Sweden

So sad to hear these news coming from my country.

Acapulco isn't safe anymore, I as a mexican wouldn't go there either. Mazatlán is not as dangerous as Acapulco but still wouldn't go there.

Puerto Vallarta is very near from where I live. I would go there anytime, actually just went for a weekend trip. Very safe place.

You couldn't find a safest place to vacation than Cozumel and Costa Maya (Mahahual).

We have been to most Caribbean ports over the past 5 years and never felt unsafe. That includes Mexico, Nassau, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, etc. We were in Roatan, Guatemala, Costa Maya and Key West in January and felt safe in all ports and on our excursions.

I guess it depends on where you live and what your experiences are as to how concerned you may be. I live in an area with almost 2,000,000 people within the extended Metro area and there are many more crimes here, including murders, than in the tourist areas most cruises visit. I use basic precautions whether at home or traveling, but am not going to live in fear or quit traveling.

Having traveled to many countries in the world, I always do the same thing. Simply be AWARE of your surroundings. Predators prey on the easy targets.

Mexico? I have never had a problem in any of the ports we have visited. Just don't go off alone in a strange area.

Every day we turn on the local news and yet another shooting in nearby Orlando, one of the biggest tourists spots in the world. And yet tourists still go there. ;)

Frankly, yes. IMO the only benefit to a western Caribbean cruise is the (typically) lower cruise fare. We much prefer eastern but don’t always have the choice of ship or class that we prefer.

15-20 years ago Western Caribbean was the more expensive route. We took a Feb cruise back then and was about $500 for per Balcony cabin when the Voyager Class came out... Never figured out why to changed to Eastern costing more now. Off/On I lived on US/Mex boarder from 2002-2008. Would cross boarder couple times a month, Navy Families/kids would also. By 2008 none would cross at nite, most wouldn't even in daytime for a while. Mexican violence been going on 10 yrs+ but just shifts to different parts of that country. I worked & supported the US govt in US Army and then for Federal Gov't doing drug interdiction... But first to admit at times was more afraid in Flint/Detroit Michigan in late 1980's-early 1990's during Crack violence

I am more concerned with the bad booze in Mexico including Cozumel. That has been highly publicized including people dying in the Riviera Maya area.

Yes, this! The tainted alcohol thing freaks me out. I would rather just drink on the ship even if it more expensive.

Yep. Mexico is an awfully big country. We have no issue travelling to the typical Mexican ports of call. Now there are lots of places right here in my home country of the US that you won't catch me in.

I just traveled for work to Chicago and Detroit. From my screen name, you might be able to figure out what I do for a living, or perhaps you think I like the pink fuzzy ones. Who knows. But...I took my gun with me to these two fine locales. Was I over reacting? Maybe. Have I even once considered (if I only could) taking my gun with me on a cruise? Nope. But I am aware when I travel.

I spent a week in Cozumel in January and felt totally safe when I left the resort, often on foot, and often by myself.

We took the ferry to Playa del Carmen on January 11th and were very disconcerted as it was like an armed camp with machine guns mounted on pick up trucks and officers armed with Israeli weapons walking 8 abreast up the street. The tourist police were paired up with Federal police and you couldn't walk more than a few feet on 5th Ave. without seeing them. I spoke with a Mexican we know who works in Playa and he said that it was not that way the week before. He felt like something was coming down, but had no clue what. We shopped a bit, had a nice lunch and then got back on the ferry as soon as we could and were relieved to be back in Cozumel.

Then, the ferry explosion happened. But, the cartel got their way as the Former Governor of Q Roo (as corrupt as they come) and his family lost their license to operate the Caribe ferry line. Those ferries were rustbuckets anyway. I would recommend using Ultra Mar if going to the mainland.

I would have no issues going to a resort in the Mayan Riviera, but I doubt we would take the Colectivo to Playa like we usually do. We would probably just stay on the resort property.

We have a cruise next month to Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan. We have booked our excursions in Cozumel and Costa Maya through 3rd parties and I have no fear in either of those places. We have been to Cozumel so many times it feels like home.

Roatan does concern me however as they seemed to be getting more and more aggressive on the streets of Coxen Hole (outside the pier area). So, we have booked a cruise line excursion to a hotel this time.

For those of you used to going downtown in Cozumel you will see a big difference. Lots of stores on the north end of town are closed, including the Forum shops where they used to drop you off. We were the only people in Los Cinco Soles downtown besides the sales people and at the Museum we were the only Americans. And, that was on a day when there were 7 ships in port. There was a group of Japanese tourists the at the Museum. The only people in the main plaza by the Cozumel sign were Mexican children and their mothers. The big Touch of Gold store is closed. Many of the small shopkeepers we spoke with said the cruise ships were telling people not to go downtown because it was dangerous. The Turkish family closed down the rug mart and the nephew of the owner, who worked in the family business, is now selling timeshares by day and working in a jewelry store near the pier after 4pm. It is so sad, but as he told me it is better to be in Cozumel than to be a Jew in Turkey under the current regime. We will hop in a taxi and go downtown before we go to the beach just to show our support for the locals who have been so wonderful to us over the years.

First, ONECRUISER, thank you for your service.

No doubt that there are high crime areas in the USA. Flint happened to be THE POOREST city in the USA in 2017, so it's really cherry picking examples when comparing to Mexico. I get the point though. I doubt most people would recommend venturing into the high crime areas of Flint, Detroit, or Chicago either. Some absolutely wonderful people, the people of Flint, but yeah, the budget issues and crime speaks for itself. If you want another view of Flint BTW, check out the new Netflix documentary called Flint Town. Doesn't touch much on the water crisis that has saturated the media, but moreso on the police and budget woes.

Speaking of cruising to Mexico, right now there are just too many reasons that I would rather go elsewhere and crime is really a small part of it. It does factor in my decision and if I can eliminate a lot of that factor by cruising Eastern and Southern Caribbean, it is a little extra peace of mind. Plus, I just flat out prefer the Eastern ports, and we'll be doing Southern early next year which I'm excited about. We just got done with a Western in January and really enjoyed it, but I struggle more to find good excursions. We did two all inclusive beach days at Cozumel and Costa Maya, (Nachi Cocum and Maya Chan Beach) which were wonderful by the way. We did a full island tour of Roatan, and man that was an eye opener. Armed non uniformed men at gas stations with shotguns, many armed guards around the port area, etc... it was just a little off-putting. Still had a great day though with the family. Very poor island, and I feel for the locals. Hopefully the cruise industry and tourism pumps extra $$$ into that island to build it up.

If a RCI ship goes to that port then I have a right to ask for people's thoughts.

And the news just came out.

Ya know if something doesn't appear to YOUR liking then just move on. Not every thread is interesting to me.

I was in Mexico on Princess cruise a few months ago and situation seemed more relax than in the past. Gone were the assault rifles and armed Mexican marines stationed at cruise pier entrance. There were quite a few policia around especially in Mazatlan blue zone but they all appeared rather relax and only carried regular sidearms, no heavy artillery. No Mexican navy patrol boat escorting cruise ship going in and out of harbor either. I felt safe.

Well, as you´ve encountered yourself and been told several times, no you don´t have a right to ask for anything or post anything on CC. It´s up to the owners, represented by the hosts and mods, to make the decision what you can or cannot post on the boards.

I agree with you, if one does not like a topic, either move on or report it to the mods for them to make the decision.

  • 3 months later...
No Royal Caribbean ship goes to Cancun.

Feel better now?

I'm sorry. I don't understand your response. It's been years since I sailed on RC and I have NO cruises scheduled to go to Mexico on any other cruise line.

What is your point with your "feel better now" comment? I am going to Europe in a few days and then to Japan next year.

1. Then why are you posting on a Royal Caribbean board?

2. Why are you commenting on a thread about Mexico?

3. Why do you care about a murder in Cancun?

4. Why did you find a four month old thread to comment on?

1. Because my information is relative to travel to Mexico.

2. Because my information is relative to travel to Mexico.

3. Because I don't like seeing people murdered-anywhere.

4. I don't know 'why' I found it.

Now a final question for you: Why are you so angry and antagonistic to someone who is only trying to offer current info

to other travellers to Mexico?

Go ahead. You can have the last word since I am sure it is important to you.
