What was your upgrade offer and what did you bid

What is wrong with this scenario is that there will be multiple bids for both the existing cabins as well as those opened up by the upgrade. I'm sure that there wont only be that $200 bid for the balcony.

yes.   They were generic numbers for easy math.   and yes there could be 50 people bidding on the same thing.  The algorithm would still remain the same.   Take the most amount of money regardless to whom it helps or screws.

The bid range only changes via the "meta"type cabin i.e. Balcony sail away and aft balcony have the same bid range.

if you read the threads closely you will see that.  Keep in mind though bid ranges can change on same ship different sailing dates. It all goes back to supply and demand = $$$$$

That would make 0 sense if I paid 3000 for a mid ship balcony and the sail away rate was 1500 (750 pp) that their minimum bid would be the same $400 pp as mine paying double the rate as that sail away rate. It would make way more sense to make their minimum double mine like $800 to recoup more money if they did win. Allowing the sail away rate the same minimum bid as someone with a mid ship balcony, yet paying half the overall rate for their cruise to begin with 1. Gives the sail away bidder a better chance to win ALWAYS because it allows them to bid more because they paid less to begin with so they have more "extra money" WHICH IN TURN causes more people who want a Haven room to buy a sail away room from the start, which therefore decreases NCLs gross money from the starting point. And 2. Makes 0 sense from a gross funds perspective because it doesnt maximize the "get" for NCL from those bidding less from the beginning. Their starting minimum bid should not be the same, if it is. Phew. Haha. Good night all 🙂

After Reading the  thread, closely you will same people different starting price for na versus bx and everything in between same bid range.  Other part is most upgrades are within last week before cruise, so they don't look at aft balcony paid 3k and bd balcony paid 2k they will upgrade whoever bids most to haven or mini suit as applicable then take highest bid for balcony and give it to the aft or bd balcony it's about the bottom line $$&&

Interesting.  Your right.  Hmm.. what about rockfishs point that is actually very good. If they take theres that may not be a great balcony spot and mine is better they are able to sell mine for more...hence once the moves take place my room will be worth more. Seem logical or am I still off. Thanks for help w this.

I doubt they take anything beyond the meta into consideration when processing bids at the 48 hour mark. They may do so at earlier dates. When they do the large "batch process" close to sailing, the only "value" your old room has is its meta, because that's what people below you bid on. They bid on "balcony" not "BA" (the exception being spa rooms). So if your bid is being compared to someone else in any sort of non-spa balcony, both of your original rooms have the same value, because someone from an inside or and oceanview will just be "buying" it through the bid process and not booking the room directly.

Further out from sailing they do seem to process some bids as one-offs or in small batches and in those cases, they may factor in the desirability of your original room because they still have time to sell it directly.

Great point. 48 hours left...a lot of people aren't buying cruises from w 2 days left so that makes sense that they just call all Balconies ..well balconies. So a Bx, Bc, BA etc is all the same.

So NCL r u sayinh that people with a BA And and Bx have a diff starting minimum bid or am I reading that wrong ?

Out of curiosity -- were you not offered the ability to upgrade on other Havens such as Owners Suites and the 2-BR suites -- or did you just not opt to bid on them?  Just wondering if those are restricted to certain cruisers?  We, for instance, are in a Balcony on the Escape, but have 4 people, and were only offered a Mini-Suite, Aft-facing, Forward, facing, 2-BR, Owners Suite, and Deluxe Owners Suite.  No Courtyard Haven or Spa suites (or Spa Mini or Spa Balcony).  I'm sure not having the ability to bid on those categories is because we have 4 people (and they have 2- or 3-people max) but I was wondering if you need more than 2 people to bid on the 2-BR suite, for instance.

Because you are 4, there are many Haven categories that won't fit 4.

Your point assumes that both cruisers received the same upgrade minimum offers.  Is this the case?  Or is the bidding range for each category customized for each cruiser?  For example, cruiser A is in a BD on casino rate (2100) and cruiser B is in a M6 (3250) and both cruiser want to bid on Aft Haven.  Would both cruisers bid range be 750 - 3500 so they are competing equally and higher bud wins?  Or would cruiser A's range be more (1000-4000) and cruiser B be less (500 - 3000) so cruiser A would essentially paying more in the bidding game?  So this make sense?  Has anyone ever collected information from multiple cruisers on the same cruise to find out if the bidding range is the same for all?

I can give you an example of my sailway upgrade offers on March 10.  I book sailaway balcony.

$1500pp beginning bid for H2, H3

$1000 for H4

$800 for H6

$500 for H7

$100 for mini suite spa balcony

$25 for mini suite

I've asked our roll call the same question and will report back if I get a response with someone in same category.

Okay, so one person replied already - she has an aft balcony and has the same exact costs for beginning bid as me. She was offered a few more options but probably because I'm 4 people and she's 2.  FYI

See theirs is higher then mine..mine was 800 H4, 400 H6 and 400 H7,  so it is different for diff prices paid

Are you going March 10th.  I thought you were going in April.  Prices fluctuate for each date on the same ship

Good point. I am going March 31st to April 7th but that starts Spring Break so I thought that would only increase prices. But your right diff times

Ok, so now I'm really confused! If I'm already booked in a Haven category paying full price and I wanted to bid to upgrade to a higher Haven category, would my starting bid be less than someone who is booked into a mini suite, for instance? And, even if it were lower, would that even matter if they go for the highest bidder? So, for example, if my starting bid is $500 and a mini starting bid is $1000 - if I bid $500 and they bid $1000 then I already lost, right?

I did get a successful upgrade on Bliss last year - initially booked a sailaway inside at a ridiculously low price (booked the day it opened) and bid $175 per person for a balcony (I'm sure that was too high but it was what I was willing to pay). I was upgraded to an MA balcony 60 days before sailing!

Ceilidh that is my point on how ridiculous that would be. Your best customer (original Haven buyers/non bidding in) have it the worst. They paid $10,000 to get into an H7 and they have to still put bid the sail away person..that's asinine !!! So the $10,000 dollar Haven person now has to out bid the sail away person who paid 1800 for their room. It cant be that way. No way. The sail away bids 1200 on the H4 and the Originla H7 person bids 500 the Sail away takes it. Haahaaa..even though their gross money to NCL is 2300. Haha and the Haven person has already given 10 Gs. If that's correct NCL is dumb and why should anyone ever bid into Haven . The person with enough money to buy Haven at 10 Gs should buy a sail away at 1900 and then offer 2500 pp to H7 and they  almost def win the bid and their grand total is 5000 plus 1900 which is 6900. Saving themselves 3100. And to take it a step further since they will never win a Haven bid if they originally bought a Haven because they now have to still out bid the person who paid $8000 LESS then them for the room....so if they want to bid on H4 and they want Haven still bid into the sail away or Balcomy at $2000 and then bid $3000 pp on bid which will get u the win (easy ) and u get an H4 for $8000 rather than buying (originally)  an H7 room for $10,000 and still have to out bid the rest of the ship to upgrade from an H7 to an H4. Which will be $10,000 original price plus probably $3,000 more to out bid the rest of the bidders so now at $13,000 for the H4. Something isnt right if this is how its done as I stated earlier !! Great point Ceilidh1

We were in an H5 on the Bliss in October and we were offered to bid on an
upgrade to an H4 for a minimum of $500 PP or an H2 for a minimum of
$1000 PP. Although we did not bid, I doubt we would have had to beat a
mini suite  bid because the H5 would have brought in more than the mini suite for upgrade purposes.

That's why so many people have said and have been saying that anyone that pays full price for the Haven is out of their mind especially when people are snagging the same rooms coming from lower categories for half the price. You call them NCL's best customers, others would probably call them something else. I've never felt in all my years cruising that I overpaid for a cabin but I don't know how any one that paid full  Haven price doesn't feel like they've been  ramrodded ..... dry.

What you are missing here is that someone who is already in a Haven isn't competing with someone in a balcony or mini-suite when bidding to a higher haven category. Because their original room has far more value. If someone in a Haven bids say, $800 and someone in a balcony bids $1000. NCL will still award the upgrade to the person in the Haven, because doing so means they get the $800, plus whatever someone was willing to pay to upgrade into the original Haven room from a mini-suite, plus whatever someone was willing to pay to upgrade from a balcony into that mini-suite.... There are algorithms used to calculate what sequence of upgrades will net NCL the most money. It's not just you and some other people bidding on one room and competing directly with each other. It's hundreds of people bidding on potentially hundreds of rooms and NCL is going to figure out how to squeeze the most money out of everyone.

Ok got that from top down now with regards to Haven people. So in essence most H2 and H3 s go to someone already in the Haven because it allows them to get their original money from Haven, their upgrade money, then the money to move somebody else from Mini suite to Haven and from balcony to mini suite and from interior to balcony etc. Got it Haha:)

OK - this makes far more sense! I have to say, even though I booked into a Haven this trip I doubt I would ever be able to afford it again. Not sure why, but the cabin we snagged (H8 on Bliss) was priced reasonably (for Haven) and we only paid $1600 per person for it outright - this got us all the perks, other than free airfare that wasn't offered from my city. Now I look at my sailing and the lowest category available is over $3000 per person! No way would I pay that! If I get the opportunity, I would likely put in a bid for a 2 bedroom but probably not for any of the other Haven rooms...
