Fight on the Escape

I hope the captain threw the guy with the tattoos on his chest and the guy with the beard off the ship. Zero tolerance for punching anyone.

Security always takes a beating on these boards but remember security on ships are not police. They are trained to de-escalate without having to put their hands on people unless its necessary. Security are like courtesy officers on ships. Police are given legal protections which is not the case with cruise line employees.

While not the biggest fight in the world, everyone wanted to get in the last punch and not walk away. I hope they walked the plank at the next port.

this has little to do with security, class of people or drink limits. It has to do with a few people who let their emotions control their common sense.

1-security: apparently, eventually some were escorted to their cabins to calm down

2-classy, for heavens sake, there are people with class and some with none on any cruise line, even upscale ones. Certainly all mass marketed lines have passengers a lot of us would not want as our best friends and they wouldn't want us. A lot of people would say, those who choose the booze cruises with unlimited drinks have no class, others would say, they just wanted a break from their hectic lives.

3-drink limit, whether there is none or 15, makes little difference. Anyone who consumes even 15 in one day isn't going to be thinking too straight at the end of the day.

So much for security, you want more security? Here is what happens when more security shows up

Saw a lot of security kicking people on the ground and one who threw a punch at a female! Nice going.....

I have heared, on one of my first cruises, that NCL have (had?) former gurkha soldiers in their security team. A fistfight is a small thing compared to what can happen so I don't think that a incident like that really show us how good the security is.

I haven't seen gurkhas on NCL since the earthquake tragedy in Nepal a few years ago. They're Filipino now.

So much for security, wow, I am shocked to see that there really is NOT any security on board...

Watch the video again. The people in black pants and white shirts are security. There are plenty of them.

This wasn't a serious fight. A couple of drunks pushing each other and yelling. The more serious issue was the crowd of morons and drunks yelling and screaming. Have security rush in and start grabbing people and the mob gets more excited. Some side with Moron A, while others side with Moron B, and the crowd rushes in and it turns into a riot, and people actually get hurt. Two guys fighting is a minor thing. 50 people fighting is a major thing. Security handled it exactly right in the video.

Security has probably been told not to engage in certain situations. A slippery surface coupled with water and jutting edges could be deadly. Get a couple idiots fighting and add security to the fray could lead to worse outcomes.

Instead of some moron yelling “break up the GD fight” how about everyone clearing the area? Instead of yelling “a**hole” in unison how about, idk, leaving the area?

I saw a kid and mom walking along with ice cream. Hey mom, take your child and leave the area.

If security was armed with sticks and beat the people senseless would that be good? I think not.

It has little to do with “clientele” and everything to do with the hot sun and possibly drinking. We really don’t know if and how much was drunk. We don’t know what started it. But we do know that every moron who stuck around to watch, egg on, whip out a cell phone to record, and did not leave the area contributed to the situation.

AMEN!

Love how the person filming this is yelling about what needs to be done, instead of clearing the area so someone CAN DO something.

Several years ago, I saw something similar on a Celebrity cruise I took, "in the grassy knoll" area. Two guys, who were drunk at 10:30 a.m. going at it. Who know why, or how it got to that point, but stupidity knows no bounds, regardless of the scenario, or cruise line.

If they had gurkhas before they are very serious about the security so we can assume that they have very professional staff available for all kind of incidents.

I agree with those who say that the staff involved around the fight did a good job. It's always easy to watch from outside and think otherwise but I think that they handled it professional.

Maybe they need to rethink/revamp their security system, If they don't have staff that are properly trained for all types of situations that could happen on a cruise ship.

NO I think they need to rethink the drink pkg. Been on 3 cruises and seen brawls on all 3. Its just ridiculous!

You give NCL security way too much credit. They are great at finding and taking your unauthorized beverages and such when you board but they have very little experience or training in actual physical confrontations. They do not carry guns and a good many of them are out of shape. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what they try to do, but in the end most of them are just as afraid as the average person when confronting a combative person or persons.

Truthfully the best approach in this situation is to let the combatants tire themselves out and then go in. It has nothing to do with fear, it has to do with being smart.

Think of all the 1000's of people who use the drink package and do not get in fights. Not fair to them. Most of us can drink responsibly even on a cruise!

That is faulty thinking. Believe it or not, alcohol does not cause violence. Violent people cause violence. We don't even know if these people were intoxicated. You just assume that because of your own preconceived notions. News flash: even sober people fight sometimes.

omg, watching the video, I have to wonder why the guy that got pushed into the Pool felt the need to go over there and start talking crap( no I didn't hear him say it but you can tell from the video that he got into that one guys face and said something to him) it looked like the fight was starting to get under control before that guy showed up got said something and got pushed . He came out of the pool and started beating on the guy that pushed him, that's when all hell broke loose.

sometimes people just need to remove themselves from a situation and not make it worse

It looked like there was a woman and a man on the floor when the security was kicking them. It looked like he was trying to cover her and protect her from getting hit by security. If someone is on the ground already I don't think they need to be kicked. I don't think the right response either is to just let them punch it out and tire themselves out and then step in so staff doesn't get hurt. I know if someone started punching and attacking me I won't want staff to wait till the other person was "tired" to come help me. There should be more staff mingling or nearby in the crowded areas to intervene before it gets to the point of violence. A verbal argument might be diffused if a staff member is closer by. It seems like from what a few of the cruisers have commented that when they have alerted staff to a problem, they blew it off, or were more concerned with not making the unruly customer upset. Upset customers affect their bottom line earnings.

The need "real" security on the ship. If you're involved in any violent activity you should be put in a cell until the next port then kicked off the ship. Done.

Also, the major cruise lines should have a "no cruise list" they can share amongst each other so that these people are never allowed to cruise again.

and I have probably been or 5 or 6 now with the UBP: never seen a single fight or anyone really being totally obnoxious. Also did a Princess cruse with a drink package, the same. Of course I don't hang out at the bars until early in the morning like some people do.

I have sailed this cruise twice out of NYC (on the Breakaway) and never saw anything close to this. That was before UBP was a "perk" tossed in for almost everyone though.

Hopefully all of Staten Island and the Jersey Shore does their cruising in July, because we're sailing the Escape in August and I don't want to experience any of this nonsense or have my kids experience it.

I'm glad the guilty parties were confined to their cabins. I hope they were tossed off the ship in Bermuda as well.

I’ve been on 11 cruises across 3 lines and never seen one (thankfully). [emoji848]

Even if all booze is ala carte, people who want to get drunk and rowdy will still do just that.
