Rare drron29 Posted September 14, 2023 #18439 Share Posted September 14, 2023 I am well known for getting along with birds and i often talk to them. I have a new little friend who loves coming and sitting alongside of me when I am gardening. I disturb plenty of insects so he has a good feed. today however he decided to join us for drinks and a snack on our patio. Turns out he likes a good brie and sweet potato crisps but oat flakes if nothing else available.

Emtbsams Posted September 14, 2023 #18444 Share Posted September 14, 2023 Speaking of animals...I went down to the house in Florida to make sure there was no damage from hurricane Idalia. Fortunately, there was no damage, just a few items including a black shoe washed up on the shore. When I was getting ready to leave, I looked down from the deck and saw a large black bear just below me. I quickly ran into the house to get a camera, but by the time I got back he had moved off a bit. He was simply gorgeous, especially at a distance! You can spot him between the sago palm and the palm tree on the left.

He certainly looks like he's had his fill of snacks! It is indeed a willie Wagtail. He was quite likely taking some of the food back to his female partner on the nest as it is that time of the year here. And this one is a male with a little white line above the eyes. The only way to tell them apart. A couple of days previously I saw quite a few male brush turkeys building their nests. females do not build the nests but inspects the results and if it passes muster lays her eggs there then covers them. Some males build superior nests and more than one female lays her eggs there. Neither sit on the nest but the male inspects it regularly to make sure it is the right temperature around the eggs. And here is a male collecting leaves for his mound and at the same time clearing the walkway. And here is the mound when I came back the same way. Obviously not finished as the male returned to make some changes. The males have that yellow patch of skin hanging down whilst the females just have a flat yellow patch which is called a wattle. And a female finding some food. The young chicks have to fend for themselves immediately after hatching and can fly within a few hours. QueSeraSera Posted September 14, 2023 #18449 Share Posted September 14, 2023 @drron29's post sent me off into internet search land, even used a chatbot. OK, to an American, that is one funny looking turkey. Distant relative of what Ben Franklin thought should be the USA national bird (can't imagine how an eagle won out). But the mating habits are indeed as described above, can't decide if they are funny or tragic somehow - and whether they have any relevance to my neighborhood. 🙂
