I have been touched by how communities have come together to help each other. A Tampa chat forum is being used to advertise free help from individuals and businesses. A retired man in his truck is delivering free generators, sand bags, etc. where needed...some freely provided by businesses, others paid for by himself. And this is only one example. My faith in humanity is glowing!. Best for your DH's family in the Tampa area. Below from the New York Times is their latest map showing the path and expected impacts. Tomorrow morning, we will be able to see and know more for the damages and how long it takes re-build and star to have some start of recovery. THANKS! Rare TLCOhio Posted October 10 #22830 Share Posted October 10 (edited) How is Lois doing in the Jacksonville area and any updates from others at the Cooler who are Florida connected? The hundred plus tornadoes were somewhat of a surprise. BUT, the water, wind, flooding, etc., has been as bad as expected (and then some more) when it hit the Sarasota/Tampa areas last night and move to the east. We forget about Florida having many vulnerable mobile homes and many homes/structures built prior to the 1990's when building standards there were strengthened. Good luck to all there and those working to clean-up, re-build, etc. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Edited October 10 by TLCOhio
Rare Lois R Posted October 10 #22831 Share Posted October 10 Hi Terry, I am good....actually, in my community it was like nothing happened at all.....some rain and a little wind. Nothing more. As for mobile homes? When it comes to a tornado, those homes don't stand a chance........and that is one thing about this whole storm thing that surprised a lot of people.....the East Coast got MANY tornados. Pt. St Lucie is at least 150 miles away from where the Hurricane hit and they got hit too And they are on the East Coast. So really central and southwest Florida got the brunt of everything. Milton didn't come up here (thankfully). The roof of Tropicana Field got torn off and the inside was supposed to be a safe sight for first responders.....that won't be happening now. I know they said this hurricane was not the worst case scenario, but for those folks who lost their homes it was as bad as it can get........... Wishing them all the best. 5
Camillus112 Posted October 10 #22832 Share Posted October 10 Our Tampa family had minor damage in a porch, but several trees were uprooted and branches were flying everywhere. They are all fine, thanks Terry. 4
Rare spinnaker2 Posted October 10 #22833 Share Posted October 10 Son lives in PSL. He reports trees down in yard and lots of debris. Street flooding. He built the house fairly recently and it has impact windows and extra hurricane tie downs in roof. We are south of PSL, and had some wind and tornado warnings. No damage other than little tree branches in yard. Grateful for our luck and sadness for those who are suffering from the storm and its spawn. 5
Rare jpalbny Posted October 10 #22834 Share Posted October 10 Greetings from Iceland Air. We're on a daytime flight from Logan to Keflavik. Less than 1h30 until arrival. We grabbed a rental from ALB last evening after work and got going bright and early this morning. The Mass Pike was a mess of construction but traffic was flowing smoothly until Framingham. Then it took another hour to go the last 20 miles. We were still early and got to the BA lounge by 10:30. Had a nice hour plus there before going to the gate on time, where it was a long wait until boarding. But we paid attention and were the first two on the plane. Despite the late boarding we pushed back only 7 minutes late and we are still on track for an early arrival. Loving the gin menu on board. That's a big reason why we did a daytime flight! So far I've tried Lundey gin which changes colors from blue to pink when you pour the tonic in, and Himbrini Old Tom which was thick and flavorful. Round 3 if I can stay awake long enough... The food was good too. We both had a duck salad for our entrée which was very generous, with huge chunks of thigh and leg meat. Yum! The lamb carpaccio was great too (IMO) but Chris said no way. The seat belt light just came on, as we are flying over the southern tip of Greenland. We are a little too far south to see the coast. More to follow. Hoping for an Aurora sighting. The solar storm looks strong and maybe the weather will cooperate? 🤞

Rare jpalbny Posted October 11 #22838 Share Posted October 11 We got to our hotel in Reykjavik just before midnight. Looking forward to some sleep, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Mostly green. Not as much pink as the pictures I'm seeing from elsewhere. The show went on for hours. We slept on and off because of FOMO. The lights were still there even when we got up at 6AM to get ready for our tour. Heading south now for an ice cave tour. Hoping for another show tonight!

An ice cave or “Inside the glacier”? The latter is fabulous.
lincslady Posted October 11 #22840 Share Posted October 11 Another rather silly Lola dilemma - much talk in today's Times about the naffness of fish knives. My mother had a lovely set, originally my granny's, very fancy EPNS and naturally not sharp. She told me that they came in because your usual silver cutlery was unsuitable for fish, for some obscure health reason. Apparently the royal family and other grandees use just two forks to disassemble and eat their fish course. Does anyone who understands etiquette, or a scientific reason why silver might be unhealthy, have a comment. Mine are now with my daughter who has been using them - but might now feel she should not! And are they used anywhere apart from the UK?
Rare drron29 Posted October 11 #22841 Share Posted October 11 Sorry for the pun Lola but it is an old fish wives tale. Back in the days of the first mass produced knives they were made of carbon steel. Fish dishes often incorporate acidic sauces such as with lemon. Carbon steel would turn black and discolour the fish hence the introduction of silver fish knives. No health problen at all. However with stainless steel that is no longer the problem Silver knives are inferior as a much softer metal and more expensive. Getting consigned to collectors now. 2

Alberta in fact is one of the best viewing places for the Northern lights if you look at the maps of where auroras are visible. And did you know that the little notches in fish forks are for assisting in removing bones?

Another puzzle for drron to solve for us. Or maybe it has something to do with paying for the central heating?

I don't entertain as I once did… And then, there are those ice cream forks… Davy your place settings are elegant and special.
