Dining Room lunch while in port

Are most main dining rooms closed for lunch while in port? That's been my experience on Holland America as well as Celebrity. Was wondering if all cruise lines do the same thing? TIA

I seem to recall that MDR’s on most lines are not open for lunch while in port. It makes sense- given reduced demand and also a chance for some of ships personnel to have time off.

I agree that MDR is usually closed for lunch when in port from my experience on Royal, NCL, and Princess.

On Cunard the main dining room is open on port days.

We have been on Carnival ,Celebrity ,Royal ,NCL and HAL and the MDR was closed .

 

However,on our Cunard cruise the MDR was open for lunch .

Agree most if not all major lines mdr is closed on port days.

It will depend on the ship & the port

 

If people are gone on long tours all day EG SPB or Berlin

 

makes no sense to keep the MDR open

 

Oceania had the GDR open in most ports some days it was closed but not many

Lunch in the DR is generally only on sea days. The buffet will be open on port days.

On Princess the MDR is closed on Port days with the exception of ....

embarkation day (basically a port day for those doing a b2b)

and days when there is a late arriving port stop.

Other places like the buffet, International Cafe, hamburger grill, pizza station, etc. remain open as normal.

Luxury lines such as Regent will have the dining room open for lunch on port days as well as sea days. A nice option!

Except for a couple of the upscale cruise lines like Cunard and Regent, the cruise lines close down the main dining room at lunch time.

In my experience, upscale cruise lines keep one of the non-buffet style restaurants open for lunch.

Just off the Carnival Alaska Journeys cruise (14 days). One port day we DID have lunch in the MDR. Very odd since we arrived in port at 11am.

Only other times we’ve had MDR lunch on a port day has been when arrival is around 3pm.
