brtls5 Posted January 23, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2019 Quick question, I've tried searching the board but when I do.. it mostly speaks to gratuities for your cabin. When you tip for room service, drinks at the bar, any service.. is this tipped in cash or do you put it on your account? I'm trying to determine how much cash I should bring. I didn't know if I should give cash when I go get a drink or have one delivered or put it on sail/sign. THANKS
Rare Roz Posted January 23, 2019 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2019 Tips for drinks will be automatically added, so need for cash unless you want to tip your favorite bartender or bar waiter extra at the end of the cruise. Tips for room service are done by cash. Roz
Rare Essiesmom Posted January 23, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 23, 2019 If you do not have a drinks package and have to sign a slip, you can tip cash or add it to the bill. If you have a drink package and do not sign a slip, you can give cash. These tips would be extra, above what is automatically added to the slip or the cost of the package. ShakyBeef Posted January 23, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2019 My additional tipping is done in cash. That way, the server / bartender can keep it or share it with others as they wish. Additional gratuity can be written in on the drink receipt, and that way added to your S&S account, but then Carnival decides to whom that tip goes. Shaded Lady Posted January 23, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2019 I typically bring about 50 $1 bills... I use it for the bar, for room service, for the porters I give my luggage to... bear in mind, DH & I are not big drinkers so the bar tips are usually minimal. You may want to adjust accordingly.
zencruisers Posted January 23, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 23, 2019 We typically bring about $250 in ones & 5’s for tipping. We give those to our room steward, bartenders and servers.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
coevan Posted January 23, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 23, 2019 seriously? you can get ones anytime at guest services or the casino cashier. Where do you put 5" of cash, wouldn't even fit in your pocket
jdemps Posted January 23, 2019 #9 Share Posted January 23, 2019 I always just add it to my receipts on the tip line. I like to have all expenses on one card. I didn't know that Carnival decided who gets the tips that are written in. Does that mean they split the tip pool from that shift with those employees working or does the whole pot of written in tips from all passengers just get divided up by everyone at end of cruise? coevan Posted January 23, 2019 #10 Share Posted January 23, 2019 not what room service or bar personal tell me. The room service server and bartenders told me they keeps the tips written in.

Had a bartender tell me he gets all of the write in tips and he has a way to log in and check them every night to make sure it's right.

That's what I was told as well, and I saw at the bars that they all have their own cup by the register that they put their receipts that had tips on them in.
Florings Posted January 23, 2019 #13 Share Posted January 23, 2019 We always tip them in cash, over and above the automatic tips.
ShakyBeef Posted January 23, 2019 #14 Share Posted January 23, 2019 I have heard mixed reports on whether or not the written-in additional tips are pooled or kept by the individual. I've heard both ways from Carnival crew and from many CCers over the years, so I don't know which way it actually happens. And I don't want to put too much effort into finding out. It's quite frankly their business, not mine, after the tip leaves my hand, where it goes. But I do know that if I hand a person a cash tip it is then up to them what they do with it. So this is what I do.

I have gotten to know several bartenders well on Carnival and have discussed tipping policies with many of them. Any additional tip that is added on a receipt goes to the bartender whose name is on the receipt. I used to tip in cash, but most of the bartenders I have talked to (not all of them) said they prefer tips on receipts because it is easier for them to track, they don’t have to worry about carrying around cash, they don’t have to worry about cash being stolen, etc. So now I almost always tip on the receipt, although I still use cash when tipping waiters and room stewards.

summersigh Posted January 24, 2019 #18 Share Posted January 24, 2019 Drinks have an automatic 18% added to your tab. We felt that this was sufficient. I take a stack of $1 bills with us for Room Service. I normally tip $2 for just coffee and juice. If we order breakfast then I up it to $4

Free items have nothing to add a percentage to (0.00 * 18% = 0.00). Room service waiters do not share in the daily gratuity pool.
Coltsgal87 Posted January 24, 2019 #21 Share Posted January 24, 2019 We do our additional tipping (servers in casino, room steward, we don’t eat MDR) all in cash. Hubby and I order a drink we give him 1.00. He definitely comes by often to check on us too. Lol room steward 5-8.00 a day but all at end of cruise. Eliot Ness Posted January 24, 2019 #22 Share Posted January 24, 2019 So how does the tip get divided up between a server and the bar tender? I have no clue so I tip extra in cash and I haven't had any of them say anything except "thank you". Like many I bring a wad of $1's with me and replenish at the casino if needed. On the Valor one year I tipped our Russian server $5 when he brought our first 'drink of the day' on the Lido and we've never had such great service before or since. If I knew what ship Sergei was on now that's where we'd book.

Any cash you give goes directly into the pocket of the employee receiving it.
