And I don’t think 45 minutes is a stretch for the pizza line at all. I’ve easily spent half an hour in it and that’s only when I have decided it’s an acceptable length. Plenty of times I’ve decided to skip it.

Is there a link to the current room service menu - one that will be functional thru December when we sail the Sunshine? I've searched but can't find any I can "trust" after that snaffu over room service back in January. DH has mobility issues and sometimes just enjoys eating room service lunch out on the balcony or a nice late day/night snack. Thanks

People who have early dining , up late dancing or playing in the casino. Many people  don’t stuff themselves at dinner ....small meals . When 1:00 or 2:00 am roll around you might like a lite snack.

In addition to 24hour soft serve there are also several room service options.  I think the cafe with the specialty desserts and coffee is open late too.  Those are pay options, but still something if the munchies strike.

 

Depending on how much space you have, you can also bring some small cookie packs in your luggage.  Or get something earlier in the day from Lido (or MDR) to take to the cabin.

 

For those who like the pizza, you can also order through the hub for $5 per pizza delivery fee to anywhere on the ship.

I don't understand your comment coevan!  Cruising did used to be all inclusive.....there weren't even any upcharge steak houses, there was bountiful food  around the clock, room service was FREE, MDR was totally FREE not with upsell items like lobster (which also was included for FREE) like now. They have added spa cabins with charges to use the spa with passes now.  We used to use the steam rooms and saunas, the great showers up there for free all the time....now you need to buy a pass....that used to be included too.   If you have been cruising since the 80's, certainly you would know how there was very little back then that was an "upcharge" over your cruise fare.  Now, everything is either being cut or an "upcharge fee" is tacked on to what used to be "included".  That is what the OP is talking about.

Like I've said many times. Perhaps there are other cruise lines that will meet your needs.

 

What occurred 30-40 years ago isn't applicable to today.

So much to swallow here, there were no Steakhouses in the 80' or 90's that I am aware of. The steam, sauna and great showers are still free. All inclusive to me means one thing, free liquor, like Sandals and other A.I. resorts. Cruise ships are not A.I., unless you go way upscale. Also A.I. resorts have free scuba, snorkeling, hobie cats, kayaks.... you get the picture.

You are correct  about the steakhouses, at least on Carnival and were originally

called Upper Clubs.  First debuted on Spirit class ships which started in 2001.  For the vast majority of ships, the sauna is still free also.  The rest are options, you can do them or not.

Okay, cruise lines were never ALL inclusive, but every year they get less and less inclusive going from mostly inclusive to pretty much al carte, with a few basic services included.

coevan, let's compare "apples to apples" which is what the OP was doing, and this thread was meant to be doing.  The OP was not comparing a cruise ship to AI on land vacations.  I believe what the OP was saying was that cruising has changed, per my comment above...correct, as I said there were NO steakhouses in the 80's and 90's, but there are now and there is an upcharge (NOT FREE) to go there.....that is a change from everything being FREE to being nickel and dimed to death these days.  Let's stay on the 'same page' and compare cruising in the 80's and 90's to cruising today on the main lines (such as no longer free room service 24/7, MDR menu additions for additional $$ which used to be 'included' on and on).  Let's not even get into cruise lines like Crystal or Regent in which tours are even included etc.....not a fair comparison nor one the OP was making.  That was my sole point.

We've been cruising Carnival lately but I do say I miss O'Sheehan's Irish Pub on NCL ships.  It is always open 24/7 and had a full bar menu of appetizers, soups, sandwiches/burgers, Shepard pie, desserts.  You actually get to sit down at a table and be waited on, no standing in long lines.  You can also eat a full breakfast there instead of fighting the Lido buffet or doing the drawn out main dining breakfast.  Kind of in between buffet and main dining room.

 

On the Sunrise on our Journeys cruise they did have one night of the old midnight buffet, but the line was so long!  We waited about 45 minutes and still hadn't reached any food yet.  Then they told us it was closed before we even made it up to the food.  What a waste of an hour, then we had to go get pizza, which that line was really long as well because people were giving up on the buffet line.  They should just eliminate the buffet if they are only going to keep it open for 1 1/2 hours, not even enough time to feed everyone.
