Most surprising thing seen on a cruise

We have been on 50 cruises on 4 different cruise lines and I am still appalled to see people in bathrobes in the Lido buffet breakfasts. When they move it is easy to see they have nothing on underneath the robes. I find it pretty inappropriate.

Our very first cruise, 1988, 3 day out of PC to Bahamas... it was March break and the Lido Deck was wall to wall loungers and high school kids. A young lady (no more than about 16) had undone her string bikini top while sunning on her stomach... she sat up and exaggeratedly stretched, like she forgot she was nude from the waist up!

 

While that was surprising, what was funny was watching the cruise director jumping on and over loungers to get to her to tell her to cover up. She giggled and 'acted' embarrassed but it was obvious from her reaction and her giggled conversation with her friends after the CD walked away that it was planned!

 

DH and I still laugh about it, but vowed that was the last spring break cruise we'd ever take!

My two most surprising things aren't nearly as interesting as some of these, but they were two things that were a total surprise:

 

1. We saw whales doing that "flick feeding" thing while we were on an Alaska cruise

2. Also on an Alaska cruise, we saw the Northern Lights

 

We weren't expecting to see either of these.

A few years back on a cruise, I got sunburned real bad on the first sea day.  By the end of the cruise, my forehead had peeled to the point where it was bleeding.  I put a band aid on it and we went to the casino.  I had a drink in my hand and had just lit a cigarette.  My wife also had a drink and had just lit a cigarette.  She ask me to hold her drink and cigarette when she went to the ladies room.  A guy walked past me, stopped and did a double take.  He ask if he could take a picture of me.  Said it was the funniest thing he ever saw.  Two drinks, two cigarettes and a bandaged forehead!  

 

So somewhere out there is a picture of me being the funniest thing some guy ever saw.  😉

Carnival Spirit cruise out of San Diego maybe 17 years ago.

We sailed thru a storm and they had closed the upper deck because of the high winds. The loungers were stacked railing height and tied together and to the railing with a rachet strap. A group of teenage boys were standing on top of the stacked loungers next to the railing pretending to windsurf in the high winds! The winds were so strong that they could barely get their footing to stand upright on the chairs! Scariest thing I've ever seen.

On the Navigator of the seas a couple years ago, we were at the skybar and a guy was pointing out women around the pool deck rating them on a scale of 1 to 10 to just about anyone who would listen to him. While completely inappropriate, it seemed like he was just another drunk at the bar doing something stupid until he pointed out a woman he considered to be a "3"...... to her husband!  He hit the floor like a sack of potatoes and security came and eventually took him away after the crowd at the bar explained what led up to his unexpected "fall".  Surprisingly leaving the guy who decked him to finish enjoying his beer.

Not sure why my post was deleted but I'll try again and remove any of the quoted profanities.

 

The family and I were on the Carnival Inspiration. I'm a big party type so I ended up hanging out with all the hard partying folks on most evenings at the casino bar. There was this one couple (think tank top and bud light crowd) and another fella named Ron, who became known to everyone by the time the cruise was over. He and I got along at first and I also got along great with the couple but they had beef nearly the entire trip. They almost got into several fights on different nights with accusations that the wife of the couple had given him her phone number. He also almost fought with his travel companions on another night. 

 

They actually managed to get the bar shut down one night after a shoving match that nearly came to blows and had security standing around watching the whole area and everyone was peeved to say the least. Ron ended up with the nick name of Ron Burgundy after one of the numerous exchanges ended with the wife of the couple loudly yelling  "F bomb you Ron Burgundy" (he was wearing a burgundy velour tracksuit that night). It was nuts. All you had to do was mention that name and people immediately knew who you were talking about. 

 

Ron ended up beefing with another passenger as well and was throwing homophobic epithets loudly across the bar and acting out (how do I put this delicately) specific sexual acts that he may do. Everyone was pretty shocked. Turns out the guy really was gay and he spoke up and defended himself. We all felt really embarrassed for him and everyone of us told Ron that wasn't cool and to knock it the heck off. We had had enough and he crossed the line.

 

This same character managed to sneak on lots of alcohol, like handles worth, both onto the ship and also at port. One night I was invited back to another guests balcony cabin for a drink by Ron and lets just say it was like a bar..lol. Anyway to continue,  we were eating lunch in Ensenada and we hear someone yelling and being loud. Turns out to be Ron Burgundy! He was using vulgar language while loudly (and drunkenly) talking to a female. It seems they had made some new friends but the guy that was with the female seemed annoyed at his presence, totally understandable, as Ron was the loud close talking type who could be touchy at times. 

 

The last night of the cruise I didn't even bother showing up to the bar as I'd had enough of all that and was tired of playing referee and the drama. Plus the previous night they had made plans to fight once back at the port with the tank top/bud light couple and Ron Burgundy suggesting they both had weapons in their vehicles as well, in an attempt to scare the other and act tough. Not sure what happened on the last night or debarkation as I was one of the last to leave the ship. 

 

Needless to say it was a interesting cruise. One I'll never forget. Met a whole cast of characters and a bunch of interesting people and couples of all types and had a fantastic cruise. I was quite surprised that one person could cause so much chaos. Makes me wounder if Carnival ever did anything about it afterwards, like banning Ron from cruising. I was also surprised nothing was done on the ship as that fella had used up nine of his lives. I'm pretty sure many other passengers will remember that guy as well. That tends to happen when you make the whole ship angry....lol.

In  New Orleans to board the Dream a lady with a walker, went all the way to the front of the line for priority Handicap boarding. They put her in a wheelchair and wheeled her on the ship. Through out the whole cruise the woman was allover the ship and ports without her walker, walking just fine.

And maybe she is like me, I somedays need a wheelchair, some days a walker, others one or two sticks and sometimes I need nothing, so how do you suggest she get her walker, or wheelchair or whatever else a bad day calls for, on the ship.

 

i get so sick of judgemental people, not just on CC but in general who come out with rubbish like “ Oh so the wheelchair is just to get preferential treatment is it”.

 

i can guarantee you I would much rather have a sound body and no need of any device.

  A few years ago on Splendor from NY I saw Carnival security come into the casino around 1:AM and handcuff the blackjack dealer (crew member) and escort him out and down the stairs.

 

On the same day an elderly lady was arrested for stealing from the Fun shops.

 

Both were taken off at our first stop which at that time was Port Canaveral.

 

I was new to sailing Carnival at the time and was like..."So much for Fun Ships."...LOL

The most surprising thing for me personally was that my kids actually liked cruising more than Disneyland! Once we returned home from our last cruise, I asked them what their favorite vacation of all time was, expecting them to say one of the many San Diego, Disneyland, or one of the many theme parks we've been to. Without equivocation, they said "the cruise". I was floored, considering all the places we have gone on vacation. They absolutely LOVED the kids club. This was one of the major factors in choosing our upcoming Carnival cruise.

We were on the Liberty's 2nd cruise.  It was in Europe.  First thing we do, every time we cruise, is go to lunch. On this cruise, we walked into the Lido dining room and saw that a man was choking and someone gave him the Heimlich maneuver! Saved him right there! Then everyone just went on with their day.

Was on a Dream cruise, just left Cozumel and headed to Jamaica, when about 11 pm the ship got deadly quiet. No motors. I was with my daughter-in-law and told her "something's wrong". We got dressed and went up top. Turns out, the ship had stopped to rescue a boatload of Cubans who were stranded. There were about 30 of them in a small boat.  We were able to watch them being brought onto the Dream where they were given food, medical attention and clothes. Jamaica would not take them the next day so the Coast Guard showed up and removed them all. That was fun to watch!

Did you ever price a Disney cruise? For us no casino is a deal breaker.
