Security outside a cabin

I notice you use the word arrested. We have never had anything to do with security other than getting our cards ‘bonged’ but always been curious what powers they actually have.

As others have explained better then I could, the Captain is more or less the final authority on his ship and the security guards are his right arm.  They basically have the power to do whatever is needed to keep the ship and it's passengers safe while at sea.

Having visited "behind the scenes" on many ships, I can confirm they have a brig (prison cell) for the more unruly detained passengers.  On the carnival Vista it's right next to the morgue! (yes cruise ships have refrigerated morgues... on the Vista it's 3 drawers behind an unmarked door right next to the 2 cells of the brig).

They do if they feel you are contagious and cannot be trusted to cooperate with the quarantine.

Ive had norovirus before but wasnt on a cruise ship.  I cant even imagine wanting to be "out and about" among people with that.

Was on the Navigator a few years ago and right from the off at guy at dinner casually mentioned to a friend of ours when asked about 'post cruise' plans, that he didn't have any as he had no intention of getting to the end of the cruise so to speak!

Cry for help or not, thankfully his table mates informed someone and he was confined to cabin from that moment until the first stop where he was off loaded! - the door 'ajar' mentioned by the OP may be a procedure that's used in a case like that too?

Oh ship security is the real thing!  I had a case of identity theft years ago.  A woman went to a county clerk's office and obtained a driver's license in my name with information she had stolen (from who knows where).  It was apparently a nice little operation as many, many people were victims.  After it happened a flag with a password was placed on my driver's license so if I ever had to identify myself with it my identity could be confirmed.  Well a year or so later, at the end of a cruise, my husband got the BONG as we tried to leave the ship.  He was ahead of me in line and the security officer asked him if he was traveling with me and my husband sold me out soooo fast🤣  He pointed over his shoulder and said "There she is!"  They then took my passport and pulled us to the side and escorted us off the ship to a customs agent.  I was ice cold and scared to death, I mean it was only one Cuban, come on!!!  Anyway, we were taken to a deserted customs line, no one but us anywhere nearby, and the agent waved my husband through without even talking to him or looking at his passport and started to look me up and down.  I truly thought I was going to the little room with the bright lights and latex gloves but then he asked if I had ever been a victim of identity theft and what my password was.  Shew!  That was close!  I had no idea it would also be on my passport.  So now after every cruise I get the bong and have to be escorted off the ship to get a grilling by customs.  When I try to explain to security what it is about they just give that "Right lady, sure...." look.

I'm absolutely confident this wasn't the case in this instance, but also worth noting that we experienced security stationed outside of a cabin where a death had occurred one time; however, it was only for the day when it occurred (not the whole trip). If I'm being perfectly honest, I suspect that they were waiting to remove the body until the ship would be much quieter, and this is why they positioned someone outside of the door. From word around the ship, it was an elderly passenger and the widow continued on the rest of the journey.

Yes we have seen security sitting outside with door open. My guess was because the couple had been fighting and they needed to listen for more issues.

Fortunately to date we have never seen security sitting outside a cabin in 51 cruises and hopefully never will.

First they will be offered to do the muster drill on their own with a crew member.

It is compulsory so everyone has to go for their own safety and if they refuse they will and deserve to be kicked off the ship.

Back a few years ago I recall a ship leaving New York Harbor stopping before it made its way under the bridge and discharging several people on to a coast guard boat. They were as I understand found avoiding the muster drill and possibly got abusive.

I'm not sure "arrest" is the right word but it's as good as any. The Captain has the right to confine any passenger that he deems to be a danger to others or to the ship. It's not an authority that is taken lightly. Oftentimes a passenger who is confined to their cabin will be "invited" to leave the ship at the next port of call.

I'm feeling pretty certain there is no way to decline that "invitation." LOL

My mother had a similar experience disembarking Allure in 2016.  My parents were right behind us in line to get off the ship and we both went straight through. The next thing we knew, my parents were being escorted off the ship from a different direction and into a customs agent's office.   My mother had only to give her password and she was on her way.
She was actually encouraged to go ahead and get Trusted Traveler/Global Entry. I guess if they do their background check on you, it certainly eases the way to make random stops less prevalent.

Is it normal that they would keep the door open? Maybe she was smoking?

We had security posted at a room down the hall from us earlier this month on Allure of the Seas.  The door was cracked open an inch the entire time.  One of the times we walked by there was a handheld shower attachment sitting on the floor underneath the security officer's chair.

Had a guy get cut off from his drink package on Majesty a few weeks ago.... he was definitely "drunk and disorderly" at the time.  He later tried to steal a bottle of booze from one of the bars, and found himself with a security officer stationed outside his stateroom for the duration of the cruise!
