cl.klink Posted March 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2020 I haven't decided to cancel my March 23 Reflection cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale yet. I probably will. But, I really want a vacation. Trying to decide what I'd replace it with. If you are cancelling a cruise, what else (if anything) would you cancel? Would you still fly in a plane? Fly only nonstop or would you change planes in an airport? Stay at a hotel? What about a resort? Attend a sporting event? Visit a casino? Go to a restaurant? Where does this extend, and where does it end? - Joel
jelayne Posted March 8, 2020 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2020 We will most likely be cancelling our April TA. We have considered other cruise options over the last few weeks but the latest Princess problem, for us, ruled out there are any truly safe places. We have been fortunate to see a lot of the world and more still to go, but for the spring & summer we have decided to do a back roads road trip. We will explore some TX and New Mexico small towns. West Texas has some amazing places and it’s about time we saw them.
cl.klink Posted March 8, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted March 8, 2020 I was considering flying to Las Vegas, staying in a nice resort, laying outside by the pool, having nice meals. I could do that without much contact with people in closed cramped quarters. Not quite a celebrity cruise, but adding up the costs would be similar in cost with some similar very nice outcomes. What do you think? - Joel
Rare Georgia_Peaches Posted March 8, 2020 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2020 We just disembarked from a Caribbean cruise yesterday and flew home to ATL form MIA. I thought about the very question you pose...if not a cruise, then what? After putting a multitude of options on the table, ie. road trip to somewhere, all inclusive destination, city get-away, I circled back to cruising. We have another cruise scheduled for April out of MIA and I don't plan to cancel. After just getting off a really big ship yesterday I realized how overblown the hype is and how damaging it is to the industry. I know, I know, there are risks of exposure and of quarantine. I'm not dismissing those concerns by any means at all. It's just that I didn't get the sense that being on a cruise ship posed any greater threat to me than any of the other options that we considered. So we will sail on....
GastroGnome Posted March 8, 2020 #5 Share Posted March 8, 2020 We haven't cancelled yet - and don't want to. But DD's university graduation is within days of our return. No concerns about catching CV. No-one to worry about bringing it back to someone. No sense that being on a cruise ship is any worse - and indeed could well be better! - than any other public venue. We're in an RS so no crowded spaces, no particular issue with being confined to the cabin if needed. No flights - we're going from Southampton. Certainly being on a cruise ship is massively safer from this point of view that commuting into London in the rush hour which I do daily. The only issue is if we were delayed or told to isoltae that DD might miss her graduation. What would we do instead? Cruise. As soon as possible. andyfriend80 Posted March 8, 2020 #6 Share Posted March 8, 2020 I've been asking myself the same question. Final payment for our Ireland/Iceland cruise is early next month. As we booked onboard we can move it for free before final payment. We are travelling with a 15 month old and even the thought of being confined to a cabin is not in the least appealing. It would be ok for a few days but 2 weeks would be a nightmare!

cl.klink Posted March 8, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted March 8, 2020 (edited) Interesting responses. The main theme I am seeing over the last 48 hours is if you are at high risk, don’t cruise, and if not, the remaining risk is that a quarantine could affect you and factor that in. - Joel Edited March 8, 2020 by cl.klink
cirpi Posted March 8, 2020 #9 Share Posted March 8, 2020 We are booked on the Infinity for an Adriatic cruise in June, but likely will cancel and do a two-week West Coast road trip. We are not planning to cancel a September Alaska cruise on the Solstice.

dani negreanu Posted March 9, 2020 #11 Share Posted March 9, 2020 I'm cancelling our much awaited "taster" Apex cruise, since Israel just imposed a mandatory 14 days quarantine for everyone entering the country... We're at the 100% penalty, so only FCC. I've set my eyes on another Apex cruise next May, albeit more expensive and with a so-so itinerary. Will apply the FCC. We have another cruise late September, mostly Italy ports... Sigh. We have to fly for every cruise we'll take....
Cruisenouvelle Posted March 9, 2020 #12 Share Posted March 9, 2020 Well, we cancelled our Edge cruise for April 5....sigh. DH is in late 70s with heart issues. Just not taking a chance on a month long quarantine. We will take a drive to NC and Michigan to see family in May...fun, but it's not a cruise. Likely we'll wait until 2021to cruise😟

Yes, the thought of being confined for 14 days, at wherever they decide we’ll be is too much for us. Will probably cancel our April cruise and do a road trip to the mountains ⛰. smogfarmgirl Posted March 9, 2020 #14 Share Posted March 9, 2020 Sounds like we're a little different than the rest here...all our vacation money is tied into this, so if it's not this, it's nothing until we're able to book something decent with our FCC.
cruisetonowhere10 Posted March 9, 2020 #15 Share Posted March 9, 2020 Sadly, I think we will do nothing. I was looking forward to the trip...was the kids xmas gift as I like experiences over things and it's going to be hard to reschedule it with them due to schedules. I'd love to do an overnight somewhere close but it might not make sense given everything going on. Might just need to hold out for a replacement cruise at some point. Our daughter said no way she wants to be stuck in a cabin with her brother for that long and I concur, although it's my husband that is the biggest factor. Has anyone had any luck in situations with no trip insurance on air fare? We were flying southwest one way, so no issues there and jet blue on the other leg (which theoretically since I bought it months and months ago is not refundable/transferrable/etc.). My husband is a police officer so we will likely cancel within 48 hours of our trip (or sooner) because he's likely to be mandated to be at work or not able to risk quarantine. I'm thinking if I'm going to lose it may as well hold out and see if jet blue comes around with some kind of credit, rebooking, etc. I ALWAYS get trip insurance (cancel for any reason) for big $ trips, but I'm thinking I might need to do it for even the bargain trips. Lol.

Unfortunately if you use Celebrity cruise with confidence you can't transfer your deposit onto another pre-booked cruise which means that unless you book another cruise you loose your money. Need to decide very soon what to do.
RoxyDoxy Posted March 9, 2020 #17 Share Posted March 9, 2020 Like everyone else, I’m so very disappointed. We are booked to cruise to Alaska in May, but first we have 10 days in Canmore then driving to Vancouver for the cruise. We then have 4 days in Vancouver following the cruise. All flights, hotels, car hire and cruise is all fully paid for. We are holding fire to see what transpires in the next few weeks. At the moment we are considering cancelling the cruise part, the thought of being quarantined onboard for ex number of days is not very inviting but will wait and see what transpires, knowing we can cancel with 48 hours notice. In this case we would hopefully still travel to Canada, and just extend our stay in this area, unless of course there are any further changes. Only one of the hotels we have booked is refundable and that is the 4 nights in Vancouver. Oh and we have also pre booked a whale watching trip in Juneau independently. 😢 Disappointed doesn’t come near.
Rare bebe08 Posted March 9, 2020 #18 Share Posted March 9, 2020 We had a cruise to Japan booked for April which was cancelled. So we replaced it with a cruise to Hawaii. Our govt has just advised today against cruising for all Canadians - it is fairly stern warning. In addition, Hawaii is asking to shut its ports as is Vancouver. So it looks like that cruise is very much in jeopardy. I am thinking about what to replace this with and figure that a road trip is safest, however would also consider flying within Canada. Not making any decisions yet in hopes that all of this is over before our cruise which departs April 12.
PhillyTravelBug Posted March 9, 2020 #19 Share Posted March 9, 2020 I don’t think we will be doing our apex Mediterranean. Understandable, but I feel like Europe is not meant to be. Last trip I had was London and Paris in 2004, but the bombings in London happened right before our trip and it was a high alert then, now this. it did cross my mind of maybe just switching to cruise Norway, but our airfare won’t be so flexible for changing. May just be a regional beach trip somewhere this summer.
Rare mahdnc Posted March 9, 2020 #20 Share Posted March 9, 2020 (edited) Our situation was similar but not virus related. We were scheduled to cruise on the Jan 31 Silhouette sailing (14 night Caribbean) which was cancelled because the dry dock was rescheduled. The cruise was for my family of 4 and it was to celebrate my 60th birthday (last month). When the cruise was cancelled, I opted for us to go to the Grand Canyon instead for my birthday. We stayed at the El Tovar Hotel located on the South Rim and we even got to hike the Wave in Arizona as well. Wintertime in northern Arizona is not warm and snow is not a stranger, but we were lucky as the weather was very nice during our visit. So that is my recommendation for those that find it appealing--go visit one of our great National Parks. Edited March 9, 2020 by mahdnc

plimouth pilgrims Posted March 10, 2020 #23 Share Posted March 10, 2020 We canceled a Baltic cruise this morning when final payment was due today. too much uncertainty right now. We have a May 2 Summit cruise this year that we are concerned about hopefully things will subside. We have a land trip to Bar Harbor Maine the end of May and a Lancaster Co Pa trip in the end of June. In Aug we have a Ama river cruise in Portugal which we used $3,400 FCC on All in we have six cruises booked into 2022 right now so we will make changes as things we cannot control change. Mr. Click Posted March 10, 2020 #24 Share Posted March 10, 2020 We have three cruises booked for 2020 to celebrate our 50th. Iceland and Ireleand in May, Alaska with the whole family in July and 9 nights best of Italy in October.... The first two are covered in the current cruise with confidence, Italy in October is a long way off and I am glad it is last on the list. For now we are holding on the May Cruise to see what happens over the next 5 weeks. Things settle down we go, things don't settle down we take the FCC and re-booked for 2021. The Alaska cruise is coming up on final payment and is in the cruise with confidence time frame too but wit all the stuff going on and now the Canadians threatening to ban cruise ships from Vancouver I am thinking of just bagging it and taking everyone to the beach for a week. Italy in October?? Wait and see for now. For May if we have to cancel I like Cl. Klink's idea of Las Vegas since we already live there.......and will likely look into heading out to do some of the NPs up in Utah. The whole situation is ever changing so it is get up and look around each morning for now. Cl. Klink if you you end up in Vegas feel free to drop me a note there is a lot to do away from the Strip. Tons of great restaurants, lots of great scenery etc.
flvol77 Posted March 10, 2020 #25 Share Posted March 10, 2020 We are booked on the Edge on April 12th I have friends in the industry and they all told me to wait because they could see a full refund coming due to canceling cruises. They also said that the industry may have to make 6 days cruises from 7 day, 24 hours to clean their ships and give their staff some rest before the next cruise starts. I heard something big was coming, a lot of people here in Florida feel that the Cruise industry is going to try everything in their power (obviously) not to cancel cruises, but there is some major federal and state pressure to act this week and put even more safety precautions in order. If that happens, we live in Florida, we would head to the Florida Keys for the week and enjoy some fishing and the keys. Doubt we will be on our Oct Cruise either, it maybe time to enjoy Florida/the Bahamas for the next few vacations.
