Jewel turned away from Pacific ports

Latest is that Hawaii is refusing to let anyone disembark, nor from the Maasdam. So much for the aloha spirit and hospitality. So it looks like another 6+ days at sea in search of a mainland US port, maybe more if it has to go at slow speed. Glad I didn't bite on the cheap Hawaii-Vancouver Jewel trip, or the cheap May Jewel Alaska cruises.

It has been reported from those on board that they are down one azipod as of last night.  The refueling/supply stop in Honolulu will be later on March 22 now.

I wonder if HI will let the ship be repaired there if passengers stay on board?  If not, how much longer than usual will it take to get to a west coast port on one azipod?

Right, it is the propulsion units.  With only one operating, the ship's maximum speed is reduced.  (I think to about 16 knots)

The latest news onboard is they will now be disembarking in Honolulu March 22 - scheduled to dock at 8:00pm.

What is the story about the JEWEL being down to one azipod ?

Is this due to fuel economy I doubt it ?

Is it because of equipment problems (maybe similar to the STAR) ?

Or another case of misinterpreted/misunderstood info ?

Where is good ole Paul Harvey with the rest of the story ?

8 people from the Maasdam (6 Hawaii residents and 2 injured people) will be allowed to disembark in Honolulu.

15 people from the Jewel (15 Hawaii residents) will be allowed to disembark in Honolulu.

Aloha.

BTW: Hawaii is in the process of implementing at 15 day quarantine for EVERYONE arriving to the state. You arrive on vacation, you need to quarantine for 15 days. After 15 days, you may be allowed out, if the state does not go into lock down before that (also being considered).

Aloha.

We did POA from SFO to Hawaii in about 3+ days.  If down to one pod maybe 5 as a guess.

Jewel is currently in Hawaii resupplying (fuel and food).

read on facebook that Jewel blew an engine 😮

We're on the Jewel. Still on the way to Honolulu, expected there around 5pm tonight local time.

Immigration inspection will take place onboard there this evening.

One azipod propeller broke with a bang a few days ago, so our maximum speed is reduced to about 16 knots. Nothing wrong with engines, still producing electric and water.

No idea, many people reported a bang that "sounded like we lost a propeller" and then the speed was cut, from 20 knots to 16, and we only have one wake at the back of the ship, not two. Captain has only described it as a "technical problem".

We had been traveling at full speed for days and days before this though, so maybe wear and tear. Apart from our overnight refuelling stop in American Samoa we've been continuously underway at sea for eleven days now.

Local news reporter Lynn Kawano's facebook:

Cruise ship enroute to Hawaii plans to allow all 1700 passengers to disembark due to apparent problem w/the vessel. All would be screened in a secure location, bused to the airport where chartered planes would take them to their “home airports”

UPDATE: preliminary schedule shows the first flight isn’t supposed to leave until Monday morning, but cruise ship passengers are scheduled to disembark starting late this afternoon. Where are we housing the passengers? I still have not gotten an update from the state. Flights are scheduled to take them to Australia, Germany, Spain, England, Canada, In the US flights will go to Los Angeles & Portland. Multiple airlines are being used. This is the preliminary schedule, things could change I’ll update as those come in. PC: NCL ‬

Thank you for the update.  Eleven sea days is enough. Here is wishing you a fast and safe trip home. Welcome back to the good old US of A.

‪Lynn Kawano's latest news from her facebook:

UPDATE: ‪The cruise ship has a problem w/its “propulsion system” Sources say all passengers will remain on board until three hours prior to charter flights which will take them to Sydney, London, Frankfurt, Vancouver & Los Angeles. The approximately 1000 crew members will remain on the ship ‬

Bad outlook - blowing an engine (1 of 4) is not so bad; the STAR has been running around for some time that way.

But losing a blade off of the azipod renders that propulsion device useless leaving only one prop left.

At least with 3 engines both azipods could be used although at reduced speed.

It will be a long slow cruise to the USA/Canada mainland for repairs unless very unlikely that the US Navy

at Pearl Harbor has a quick fix ?

Comments from our resident Chief chengkp75   appreciated !

How does a ship lose a azipod prop blade - maybe hitting an underwater obstruction or metal fatigue ?

Good that at least the guests will be able to disembark the JEWEL and fly home semi-directly.

And this from the HDOT website:

https://hidot.hawaii.gov/harbors/norwegian-jewel-cruise-ship-set-to-arrive-at-honolulu-harbor/

Norwegian Jewel cruise ship set to arrive at Honolulu Harbor

Posted on Mar 22, 2020 in Main, News

Ship’s propulsion system damaged en route to Hawaii

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Harbors Division, state officials and the Norwegian Cruise Line leadership are coordinating a plan for the arrival of the Norwegian Jewel cruise ship. The ship experienced propulsion problems that require repairs at the next port, which is Honolulu Harbor. The repairs must be made without passengers onboard, which has prompted the change to allow the passengers to disembark. No passengers or crew will disembark on Sunday, March 22, 2020.

There are no confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 associated with the 2,000 passengers or 1,000 crewmembers on the Norwegian Jewel. Passengers embarked on February 28 in Sydney, Australia and were last able to disembark in Fiji on March 11.

“A detailed plan is being developed with Norwegian Cruise Line that keeps passengers isolated to avoid any potential strain on Hawaii’s resources, while also addressing the well-being of the cruise line passengers who have been at sea for a very long time,” said Director Jade Butay, Hawaii Department of Transportation. “Because of the additional precautions we are taking in response to the COVID-19 crisis, it will take some time to transport these passengers safely to their chartered planes and we thank the public for its cooperation and understanding.”

Additional information regarding the plan to transport the cruise passengers directly from the ship to their chartered planes without contact with the public at large will be made available as the logistics are finalized.

Cruise ships are on a 30-day pause in operations that took effect March 14, 2020. The Norwegian Jewel was already underway and had not planned to travel to the United States.

There seems to be a bit of upset/confusion. Heard from some New Zealanders who got the flight to London. I do blame NCL for a lot on this trip but getting everyone the perfect charter flight is probably impossible. Long lines at guest services for hours already though.

another annoyance though is that according to our letter stops at 9:30 with breakfast but my disembarkation/immigration time is scheduled for 2:15 and then straight to the airplane for a 6:45 departure. Some food after breakfast would actually be nice.

I am sure there will be lunch.  Even dinner for those with later flights.

food is the last thing id worry about on board and stuck, they always have fresh food onboarded when this type of thing happens. plus the weight gain from a cruise will sustain for days.  lol

Many groups (by flight) have been processed through immigration onboard so far, and that's expected to finish this morning.

Several groups, including those headed for Vancouver Canada have already disembarked from the ship.

We left the ship Monday lunchtime. The bus from the ship went through a back gate at the airport to pull up directly alongside a Hawaiian Airlines charter plane, with security inspection on the tarmac.

We're home safe, at our holiday home in Arizona. It was good to be able to keep in touch with those outside (and inside) the ship on Cruise Critic.
