MightyQuinn Posted March 19, 2020 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2020 The Passion Play will not be performed in Oberammergau this year. It's rare to have the PP cancelled or rescheduled but these are exceptional times. The next scheduled performance will not be until 2022. I know there are Rhine river cruises that specifically included the PP and they will need to adjust their itineraries. We're booked on a Tauck land trip to Germany this year that included the PP and are very disappointed to miss it.
surgie Posted March 19, 2020 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2020 We were booked on a Tauck Amsterdam to Basel cruise that included a side trip to Oberammergau. Just saw the news about the play. We will definitely cancel the cruise as well. Hope to reschedule in two years. Had hopes that with a September trip we could wait and see but now the decision has been made for us. We hope to go ahead with the itinerary sans the PP as we've planned it in combo with a Crystal river cruise. Would not want to lose both! But all bets may be off by that time regardless. Fletch1 Posted March 20, 2020 #4 Share Posted March 20, 2020 (edited) Sorry to hear that, but at least it is rescheduled in 2 years, and not 10 years. Edited March 20, 2020 by Fletch1

surgie Posted March 20, 2020 #7 Share Posted March 20, 2020 Honestly it's a bit of a relief to have it off the table completely. Every day I've been wondering if it would be a go or not. A few weeks ago it seemed a little silly to think that September travel to Europe might not happen for us but obviously things are changing quickly and we will hope to book in 2 years. Daisi Posted March 20, 2020 #9 Share Posted March 20, 2020 Just saw this on Avalon's site for the Oberammergau Cancellations : FOR THOSE WITH 2020 OBERAMMERGAU BOOKINGS Given the current travel advisements and cautions, the Oberammergau Passion Play performances have been postponed from 2020 to 2022. Avalon Waterways has enacted a policy to enable all of our guests with 2020 Oberammergau bookings to be the first to reserve their spots for 2022 at your current price when the performances resume. The following options are now available for these guests: Reserve your spot for a 2022 Oberammergau tour or cruise date** at your 2020 land/cruise package price. Note that new 2022 dates will become available in May, and at that time, we will re-protect your current booking on a similar date in 2022. Enact the Peace of Mind Travel Plan, providing you with a Letter of Credit for monies paid on your current Oberammergau booking, redeemable on any Globus family of brands vacation, destination or departure. You can cancel your Oberammergau booking by declining the rebooking or Peace of Mind Plan and receive a full refund of monies paid to us. https://www.avalonwaterways.ca/avalon-assurance/ Nice to know they will protect your cost of the cancelled cruise for the future one.

Can Oberammergau be spared again? I'm following the cases of covid-19 in Germany on worldometers.com and it seems they haven't reported any cases yet. Let's hope it stays that way and the villagers can celebrate another triumph in 2022.

NextOne Posted March 20, 2020 #12 Share Posted March 20, 2020 I received an email from the organizers of the Passion Play announcing that it has been postponed until 2022. Premiere performance will be May 21, 2022. I was planning to attend the opening performance of this year's Play, then take a Basel to Amsterdam cruise. I hope I can switch my deposit to 2022! Our vacation in September included a few days In Munich at the Oktoberfest before the Passion Play, then a Danube River Cruise, followed by a few days in Budapest. It’s disappointing, but not unexpected. The passion play was the main reason for the trip, so we want to reschedule the full trip and hope to recreate the itinerary in 2022. ural guy Posted March 23, 2020 #14 Share Posted March 23, 2020 For anyone who can't wait until 2022, and wants to venture out on your own...you can just visit the venue (when the current pandemic is over) where the play is held and get a tour. They explain the history of the play and you see all the costumes. The guide is a local, just as all the actors are, so we heard some pretty interesting stories when we visited a few years back. The surrounding area is gorgeous, a good time to visit Garmisch and Neuschwanstein. The Partnach Gorge is a great walk through a narrow gorge that the adjacent stream has cut over the years. The water can be raging with Alpine snow melt. The spray will get you slightly wet at certain spots. You exit the gorge, and one of the trails continues onto a high meadow, complete with grazing cows and their bells, and after a ways, a little spot to get a beer and rest your feet. Simply beautiful. Not a far drive from Munich, or you can take the train, and then take day tours to visit castles and see scenery. Rare steamboats Posted March 23, 2020 #15 Share Posted March 23, 2020 For Neuschwanstein castle it´s easier to go there by bus directly across the central station and you visit Linderhof castle too. With the train you have to go to Füssen and then take a public bus, taxi to the Neuschwanstein castle. And you don´t have to get in line for a ticket. steamboats

Empathy4You Posted March 29, 2020 #17 Share Posted March 29, 2020 We are booked on a Scenic River cruise scheduled to depart in July with the Oberammergua plsy as part of it. We hope to reschedule the same cruise in 2022. I've sent an email asking for clarification regarding this from Scenic, but have not received an answer as of today. Our cruise and land trip to Oberammergau was scheduled on Tauck for August. Their email asked us not to contact them as they are going in order of scheduled trips to contact their guests and provide rebooking or cancellation information. The Passion Play was to begin in May so those customers will be contacted before our late August sailing group. Perhaps Scenic has the same strategy. CPPADILLA Posted March 30, 2020 #19 Share Posted March 30, 2020 We were scheduled with Gate1 for a riverboat trip starting in Budpest end of May ending with the PP in Obergammerau in early June. Was so excited to do this trip but glad to receive notice over 2 weeks ago that Obergammerau and trip was cancelled and not having to wait for word on status of trip. Waiting on word now as to how funds will be handled by Gate1. They have had our money since September, yes know things take time and yes hope to be able to do same trip in May 2022. MightyQuinn Posted April 2, 2020 Author #20 Share Posted April 2, 2020 Crystal River Cruises response to Oberammergau postponement: UPDATED Monday, March 30, 2020 5:30pm EST Crystal has been notified that due to current restrictions surrounding COVID-19, local authorities in Oberammergau have ordered that the program be postponed until the summer of 2022. Guests who have booked a Crystal river cruise and Oberammergau land package have the following options: 1. Move their current 2020 booking and reserve a comparable 2022 Crystal river cruise, same room category, with the Oberammergau land package at the 2020 pricing. Crystal River Cruises’ 2022 itineraries are now available for booking. Note: Crystal expects to have the 2022 Oberammergau land package details by May 15, 2020 (subject to change) and will add the land package to the reservation as soon as those details are confirmed to us. 2. Continue their 2020 vacation by changing the reservation to a 7-night cruise-only itinerary in lieu of the 10-night cruise with Oberammergau land package and receive a refund of the fare difference. 3. Cancel the reservation and request a refund (less airfare penalties and insurance) of the travel purchased through Crystal. We kindly ask that affected guests or their travel advisor contact us at 1-866-446-6625 no later than April 6, 2020 to inform us of their decision. Crystal is working closely with the Oberammergau organization to arrange a comprehensive program aboard corresponding 2022 Crystal river voyages, and those details will be communicated to guests and their travel advisors directly as soon as they are finalized.
MightyQuinn Posted June 18, 2020 Author #21 Share Posted June 18, 2020 When the Oberammergau Passion Play was postponed earlier this year, many river boat companies offered guests the opportunity to move their 2020 bookings to 2022 with price protection. Organizers have now set the dates for the 2022 season but I've not been able to find any info for land/river options. Have any river boats released their Passion Play itineraries yet? We did a Rhine cruise, and friends met us in Basel when we got off the boat... and we headed off for a week of driving/sightseeing. We spent the final few nights in Munich. A great trip. Neuschwanstein is so beautiful. An unexpected bonus --> we found out about Highline 179 when we were in Füssen - so made a trip down to see (and traverse) it.
