What happens if ships go out, and people get sick?

I would think that first cruise lines will have you sign a legitimate screening disclosure form, i.e., you will be liable, to opine you have not been exposed or have flu-like or COVID-19 symptoms on boarding. If you are sick don't cruise.

  Second, perhaps they perform a temperature check on boarding at any port,  maybe voluntary daily.

Third, undoubtably they will require masks, at least in terminal where crowding can occur, or when outside cabin or in certain venues like casino and theaters, but optional on outside decks.  Also, a complete enforcement of hand washing or sanitizer use by all entering any public space.  Royal, at least on the SOS last February, is very good at this. 

Fourth,  anyone reporting to sickbay form any illness symptoms might be  auto quarantined to cabin for duration of cruise and escorted separately off ship at cruise debarkation.  Cuts, twisted ankles, broken bones etc. ,exempted . 

Fifth, they could make all MDR dining be required reservations in advance via ship app and limited seating to 50% capacity.  You'll move people through dinner faster so 2-2.5 hours for dining isn't necessary. 

And finally, they should do a fuller Norovirus style cleaning between cruises.  Yes you wait a little longer to get on board, but better odds of less infection risk.  Note however, that surface transmission of CV19 is a minor pathway. CV19 is primarily transmitted respirator ally,  But Noro does tend to transmit via touching surfaces exposed and then you touch your face.

 

Will this stop the virus, probably not completely, but could limit everyone's exposure to Noro, CV19, flu, common colds, etc. and thus a better cruise experience for every one.  No doubt, though we'd see lots a complaint reviews on these boards, like "Royal ruined my cruise by making me wear a mask in the casino"  .

Sounds like a blast...  Kidding aside, i agree with most of this but there are going to have to be some other perks, lower prices, to get me back on board, at least during these procedures.  I think most of us are cruise fanatics on this board and willing to put up with some pain to get back on the ships, but the vast majority are not so it will be interesting to see how RCL implements some of these policies while trying to sell cabins...

Now, i will say the 50% capacity has my attention, but i have a feeling that would result in higher prices which probably wont fly with the general public.  I asked my family about a 2021 reunion cruise because they could possibly be less expensive and you should have read some of the hate mail i got back...

Casinos on land are opening, Masks not required but slots have dividers and Tables have max 3 players spread out. When Cruises resume there with be CV tests on board for those that show symptoms and followup if ship has confirmed case

I did not say the virus is gone.I meant that there will likely be a second wave.

I have a lot of respect for Firefighters. I have 2 friends who are retired Firemen and a cousin who is with the Rescue Squad of the fire department in the town I live in.

i have 13 illnesses one of which there is no cure. I have posted this numerous times on the boards.I cannot live my life as I would want to.

Princess may have made headlines because of how poorly their cases were handled, but there were more than 40 ships with Covid outbreaks (including Oasis of the Seas with more than 150 cases) before the industry was shut down. In addition to Princess and Royal, Disney, Celebrity, MSC, Carnival, Holland America, Costa and Norwegian among others, reported Covid outbreaks on their ships.

80+% are Asymptomatic and have no signs of infection. These are the people to worry about.

The masks requirement depends on the property.  The casino in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho requires every guests to wear a mask while several of the Arizona casinos don’t.

just not worried.  I want to be on a cruise tomorrow.  Life is too short to be scared.  My sister almost died 2 weeks ago of a brain aneurysm, do you seriously think I am worried about COVID??? I will live my life and keep going.  Put me on a ship and I will be a happy camper.  We have gone out every day to stores and such since covid happened.  Just so many other things that can hurt you.  I live every day to the fullest and what is, is.  I have a HUGE family and everyone is good.  God willing we will all be good, but way to many things have happened in my life to worry about Covid.

Agree, and some States and Reservations required so no way around it. If Ships sail dont see it required as separation already present in Casino. Then cant wear it in Restaurants, kind of hard to eat

My guess regarding cruise casinos is they are watching to see how Vegas will reopen their gaming floors on how they handle huge crowds.  Interesting you mentioned separation already present in cruise casinos because from what I observed, the only time separation existed was in the mornings during sea days due to low guests volume. But at night, holy crud!  I’ve always seen shoulder to shoulder.  On my last Carnival cruise, there was so many people, I’ve had to leave several times because of the high level of noise and smoke. 
 

On restaurants, I watched videos on Disney Springs restaurants opening this week where the guests took off their mask once they were seated.  But one thing I noticed is a lot of venues were outside which had tons of spacing. Makes me wonder if the MDR will be at half capacity.

Unfortunately there is a new out break in Jilin China. Doctors have said that the patients are asymptomatic for a much longer period of time than patients in Wuhan meaning longer than 2 weeks! This is horrible if true. Also these patients are infected with a different C19 gene sequence which is the same sequence that is spreading in Russia. "Researchers worldwide are studying whether the virus is mutating in a significant way to become more contagious, but the likelihood of that has been called overstated in some early research."

Wearing a mask in the casino might help filter out some of the cigarette smoke.  

 

As I stated in another thread, perhaps they should only allow US citizens to board in a US home port, Australians in an Australian home port, Chinese from a China home port, etc.  This way overreacting politicians will be less likely to ban them from returning if 100% of guests are citizens.

Though early and we learning new stuff everyday, now proof "YET" that its mutated Or that you can get it again:

I had cancer and went thru chemo. That gave me perspective. I am not afraid of dying from this either but what I am afraid of is catching it and giving it to someone else who then dies from it. If it was just me I would go for it. I guess we all have to decide where we draw the line. Hope your sister is doing well.

The major issue the cruise companies are facing is not the customers who are willing to pay to cruise, but, the safety of crew & staff on the ships.  How do they get 1000 crew from over 10 different countries back on their ships & guarantee none of them have the virus.  Don’t think we’ll ever see a cruise out of Florida with 100% crew & staff American citizens.

Ships have ALWAYS gone out, and ALWAYS someone gets "sick"...tons of viruses and communicable illnesses out there.  Similar to every single school system in this country and abroad.  There is NO guarantee of perfect health...anywhere.  Y'all got to get this virus crap  out of your mind.....it's going to be part of life for YEARS to come.  Have to learn to deal with it...can't avoid it forever.

Pretty much what happened the first time even though spread was occuring on land the whole time to a much larger degree than on ships.

 

100 school children infected at a public school will only make local news.  3 infected on a ship will make headlines worldwide.  

 

Perhaps they should only sail 3 night cruises for a while so that fewer guests will begin showing symptoms while on board.  Get them on and get them off, like going to church.

I have no idea, just asking. Princess and HAL that had sick pax those cruises were all longer cruises.

 

On the 4 5 and 7 cruises carnival is supposed to do would you have time to show symptoms?

I guess I just don't understand comments like this.  Does anyone really believe that even with shorter duration cruises that any infections that occur on board with symptoms showing after disembarkation will not be traced back to the cruise??  It's not going to matter how short the cruise is and it will be an absolute disaster for the cruise lines.  They've got one chance to get it right, so they better!
