Rare WrittenOnYourHeart Posted July 21, 2020 #107 Share Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) The only thing I'm not missing is having to pack up at the end of the cruise and leave. Pretty much everything else - except Muster which is required by law - is totally optional. You can choose to do or not do pretty much everything else. Don't like the main theater shows? Don't go. Don't like the Silent Disco? Don't go. Don't like BINGO? Don't go. Don't like the silly game shows? Don't go. Don't like the pool? Plenty of other places to hang out. Pretty simple to avoid doing the things you don't like to do. (Other than, as I said, the required things like Muster.) If so much is not suitable, why pay after tax income to purchase it? If you're going to add up every single thing, maybe vacationing in general isn't for you. Especially a cruise where there are kids clubs that are at no charge - so everyone on board is subsidising them. They are OPTIONAL events. If someone chooses to partake, that is fine. If they don't like them and choose not to, that is fine. If you were supposed to go to every single thing, there would not be overlapping events. And even choosing which overlapping event to attend you would run yourself ragged trying to do everything. NOT my idea of a vacation. The beauty of cruising is you can choose to do what you want to and choose NOT to do what you don't want to. (And actually BINGO is usually a for-charge event, so no that is NOT included in your cruise fare.)

Bingo is fantastic income for the cruise line and a rip-off to the " guests ", er, "passengers ". Just calculate what they charge and see what they distribute as prizes. IMO---We are not a " guest " of the cruise line. We are "passengers" or "customers". Do any of us charge a fee to our " guests " when coming to our house ? I find BINGO one of the most inane things ever created and the cruiseline will make NO money off of me on it.

We feel the same about casinos, but we realize they are a source of entertainment for some people. Thank goodness they are smoke-free since most ships are designed to force passengers to walk through the casino when the outside path is closed due to bad weather or strong winds. We have played Bingo in years past but I find it an annoyance now and don't really care for it.

Ergo I don't miss them when not cruising or if I'm cruising on Disney. 🙂

We like to make new acquaintances when possible. We had the "pleasure" of being seated with a loudmouth couple from Alabama. Upon sitting, he wanted to know where we were from and then announced he was a proud member of the Sons of the Confederacy. He proclaimed, "all you d***ed Yankees murdered all the noble Confederate soldiers." I tried to change the subject, "How's the weather in Alabama this time of year?" He would not be dissuaded and continued on with his diatribe. After 5 minutes of this abuse, my wife and I got up and asked for a different table. We learned our lesson. We know everybody from Alabama is not like this. We have met some lovely people from Alabama, Texas, and just about every other State and country. I've met them, or some like them. Head of the Louisiana Tea Party and I had the displeasure of eating with them in Mid Nov of 2016. I think you know what had just happened. He couldn't stop. We need to get people out of the house more. This is getting nuts. East Texas, West Texas, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin? El Paso? Houston? Once and hopefully future Texan here. The state marketing campaign used to be "Texas, it's like a whole other country". Those are very old Dallas cliches that wouldn't even apply in Fort Worth, maybe not even Irving or Arlington between the two cities. The boots would be Lucchese, made for generations in San Antonio and now El Paso, or if you want to wait 2-3 years, by Lee Miller in Austin. And the watch would as likely as not be a Panerai. And they probably own tech stocks. End rant.
