Laszlo Posted August 17, 2020 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2020 I noticed today the Sun and the Gem are docked in Aruba. This might sound like a dumb question......But Why? Hurricane season? Cheaper to keep them there vs anchored around the Bahamas? Just curious....

Rare BirdTravels Posted August 17, 2020 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2020 They ran from Florida to Curacao to avoid hurricane Isaias and just moved to Aruba the other day. Just hanging out and enjoying the summer off.
oteixeira Posted August 17, 2020 #4 Share Posted August 17, 2020 I am just speculating but it might just be cost savings (the cheapest port to stay at in the area) or something like that?

don't-use-real-name Posted August 18, 2020 #7 Share Posted August 18, 2020 I am not a meteorologist (aka weather man) but hurricanes in the Atlantic vector away from the equator and generally follow a track across the greater Antilles (Cuba Puerto Rico) a rather more northerly transition than across the lesser Antilles (the ABC islands Barbados). But hurricanes don't have an interstate highway to follow so watch out for the off roaders !
anyman Posted August 18, 2020 #8 Share Posted August 18, 2020 Sun is set to go out of the Cape soon. It would make sense to keep it close but in a Port that would allow access on and off, till it's ready to go to the Cape.
chengkp75 Posted August 18, 2020 #9 Share Posted August 18, 2020 Sun is due for some class surveys in Aug, Gem for some in Oct, both the nearby Curacao shipyard and available class surveyors may be part of the reason, and Aruba has unrestricted crew changes (with masks and tests), so that may be another reason.
PelicanBill Posted August 18, 2020 #10 Share Posted August 18, 2020 Yes, crew changes is a big deal and the cruise lines need their ships in position to move people in friendly (and safer) ports as soon as a green light comes. The US is worse than unfriendly (and less safe) right now. Even with a CDC green light I bet we see state and local resistance for a while.
