From PortMiami: Florida Senators introduce Set Sail Safety Act

Aren't Senators members of the Senate compared to Congressmen/women who are members of Congress?

Not that one is anymore effective compared to the other.  It all comes down to trading votes with other members to get enough to get something passed.  Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

The key takeaway for me is putting someone other than the CDC in exclusive control over the cruise industry.  They can have their say but potentially they won't be king of the cruise industry anymore.

Can't see this going anywhere.  It takes time to pass legislation.   Then how quickly can they form the group and when will they issue a report.  Too long.  Hope to be sailing before they get around to issuing a report. They want to make it look like they're doing something.... it's purely PR!

None of this sounds like anyone expects cruises to resume in November.  "Develop a plan"...  "get federal agencies to work together"...

It's a start, I'm ready when they are... 😎

You are doing way better than NY. There is only one place I can get a test for any reason and results take 5-7 days.  Everywhere else you must have multiple symptoms and results are 2-10 days.

Sad, is that recent? When got tested in Michigan during Spike, instead of going to Busy places drove 20min away. Drive threw, test done in 5 Min with no waiting and had results posted online in 9.5 hrs.

I am curious are the cases down or just people aren't getting tested  because they gave up waiting in the long lines and test results taking up to 2 weeks?   I truly hope it is the cases are down.

Still doing 28-29000 Tests a day in Florida, Positive cases down to 2355 yesterday. This down from 59300 Tests and 15400 Positives 2 months ago on July 12th

The Walgreens in Webster has drive-up testing. Results in 15 - 20 minutes. No requirements to get tested.

I'd love to say NY/NJ would be supportive given we have 3 cruise ports here.  But we are still conservative on gatherings. just now allowing nursing home visitors. Theaters remain shut.  I doubt anyone will be excited to open the ports here.

To be fair, we are proud of our < 1% rate and it's working for us.  The slightest errors from people and it goes > 1% again.  One bad cruise ship can be a big problem.

NYC is a tourist town on it's own. Cruising doesn't have much to offer our economy to risk an outbreak.

The two branches of Government, the House of Representatives and the Senate, together make up Congress.

This bill has been referred to committee. It might die there. The text of the bill is not online yet, but I presume it will just allocate funds to the various agencies to take some unspecified actions, which is typically the type of bill first introduced in the House because the House holds the power of the purse. There is no one in the House talking about this bill yet that I'm aware of. This feels more like the two Florida senators trying to appease some constituents than anything substantive. I would not hold my breath on this one going anywhere soon.

The quote from Sen. Scott, who is the sponsor of the bill, is "this legislation will support the development of guidelines needed to ensure the safe resumption of our cruise lines and port operations. I will continue to work with Floridians, industry and federal leaders to safely bring back this industry, which is important to our state’s economic success."

Who is planning on going to NYC in its current condition?  Not us.

NYC is less of a risk than Miami now. However, you have to arrive 2 weeks ahead of time just to quarantine.  My point was NYC doesn't rely on the cruise industry for tourism economics like Florida does.

Yes, they also want to make daylight saving time permanent during the pandemic.

In the mid-1970’s, Florida did go to permanent daylight savings time. They do this to keep it lighter in the evening which keeps the bars busy. The results were with less daylight in the morning, the was a major rise in kids getting hit by cars on their way to school.

Yes it sounds like they want people to "enjoy" more daylight. Sen. Scott signed the permanent daylight saving time bill when he was governor, but Florida can't do anything without a change in federal law. It has been tried before and failed. Also, they are running out of time to get this one passed. Not happening.

How’s that?  Miami never had the issues NYC had and has. Did they finally pick up the trash. People are bailing out on NYC in droves. Miami didn’t defund the Police.

We are referencing two different things. My reference was towards covid. Your reference is directed towards the downward spiral that would have happened anyway under the current Mayor's jurisdiction. Yes I agree I wouldn't go to NYC to vacation either unless I was boarding a cruise ship.  However, if we never had cruises out of NYC it wouldn't harm our economy like it's harming Florida.

As a lifelong Floridian (still a resident when Uncle Sam called), we are in favor of keeping DST year round. It sucks when it gets dark at 5-6 pm when the weather is so nice out.

You threw in the comment about Miami, not me.

Miami is now open, cases and deaths are down. Hospitalizations and ICU beds are down. Positive test rates are nearing 4%.  No big surge after latest holiday beach time.  I would say we managed pretty well while opening. Let’s see how NYC does when they remove the boards from their stores (the ones that will open) and open the city again.

And I will say again. Miami has not defunded the Police. Much safer that NYC. Don’t you think once the Port is open in NJ the “peaceful” protesters will find their way there?

IMO. It’s not worth it with kids who are hit by cars going to school. Do you remember when they did go to permanent DST?

The cruise terminal at Cape Liberty is a perfect place for starting up..

It is just about the easiest place to embark from with facial recognition and pre check in it is just a matter of walking into the terminal and up the escalator to the ship..

With staggered boarding (easily enforced_) it would be safer than a visit to the local supermarket or Lowes.

With 50 or 60 % occupancy there would be tons pf room for social distancing and the need for a mask would only be when going to or from any of the  VENUES INCLUDING MDR-BUFFET-POOL-THEATER-LOUNGES-CASINO...
