travelbug615 Posted February 4, 2022 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) We were on the Rotterdam in January. I just wanted to say I loved the library on the Rotterdam. I am so glad HAL is dedicating the space onboard for a library. It is like a small bookstore with multiple copies of books. I am a big reader and belong to a book club. I have read quite of few of these selections before hand and I think whomever made the selections did a good job. So good in fact, that I took photos of the books to make a list of possible new selections for my bookclub at home. I am "iced in" at the moment due to a storm, so I took the time to make an excel list on this dready day. Thought I would post this in case it might interest anyone. I didn't take photos of the Young Adult/ Children or Poetry Sections. The list is from the Fiction, Mystery, Non Fiction, Romance and Featured Sections. There was also a bookshelf to leave books you brought and finished onboard. Books in Rotterdam Library January 2022 The Woman in the Window A. J. Rare lupaglupa Posted February 4, 2022 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2022 Is is wonderful that HAL still tries to have a real library on board. Several of the lines we've been on claim a library and instead have a dingy room with some over used computers and a few abandoned books.
Rare albingirl Posted February 4, 2022 #10 Share Posted February 4, 2022 Thank you for the list. We'll be sailing soon, and I find it very helpful. I always have a loaded kindle, but as others have mentioned, it's nice to have a book in hand.
Rare 0106 Posted February 4, 2022 #11 Share Posted February 4, 2022 Than you. What a great list of titles, many of them current. Does anyone know if a similar library is available on the Zuiderdam, we sail 2/13.

Unless HAL restores it, none of the Vista (of which Zuiderdam is) or Signature ships have a library. the only ones that retained them were the R class - Zaandam & Volendam. Let’s hope the Rotterdam is a sign & the other Pinnacle class ships will follow suit along with the Signature & Vista class. While it’s a good list, it does not compare to what used to be on board some of the ship’s libraries - especially the Prinsendam (very extensive) and the prior Rotterdam. 3
Storylady Posted February 4, 2022 #13 Share Posted February 4, 2022 Thanks for the list. One book I read from the Rotterdam during our week onboard was Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton. Mystery set in the 1640’s on a sailing ship leaving Batavia (Dutch name for Jakarta) back to Amsterdam.
rkacruiser Posted February 5, 2022 #14 Share Posted February 5, 2022 The placement of these books in the library is a very good sign to me that the complaints about the disappearance of the libraries has been heard in Seattle and someone in charge of the onboard guest experience has some influence to positively respond to the recent shortcomings of that experience that many of us have experienced.

Yes, I did notice at least one book that said it was in large print, sorry I don't remember the title. Since I wasn't looking for large print editions, there may have been more that I didn't take notice of.
jeh10641 Posted February 6, 2022 #19 Share Posted February 6, 2022 I have been in the book business (38 years as a paid employee, 10 years as a volunteer) and was impressed by the depth and breadth of Rotterdam's Library. I believe it is in the space that had been previously Microsoft's lab. That contract I think is expiring soon fleet wide so more libraries may show up. Contact HAL directly to express that desire. I know I will. Jim
Rare FlaMariner Posted February 6, 2022 #20 Share Posted February 6, 2022 Yes, it was where the Microsoft classroom would have been...... When on the Rotterdam TA in October, a local bookstore in Seattle was referenced as the source for the books.

Their lease is up and the owner of the building wants to re-purpose it for something. Fortunately, another B&N is a few miles away and there is another book store not too far away. It's good that HAL seems to have "heard" from those of us who are book lovers.
