At the time, you could not fly back to the USA without a negative Covid test. So the person posting could not return to the USA by air when the cruise ended.

 

So there were two choices:

a) Tell Princess you have Covid and have Princess cover the expenses for the two people to stay in England for x days; or

b) Not tell Princess and pay for those expenses yourself.

 

It is nice that you would have been willing to cover the expenses yourself instead of asking Princess to do so.

I am not sure, however the two cruise lines that are operating in Australia at this time (P&O Australia and Princess) both offer complimentary Covid testing and medical treatment if you test positive while onboard.

Very sorry to hear that you were so sick with covid.  I don't blame you for not wanting to cruise in Oct.  And you are correct, it is not just like the flu for everyone.  Over the course of the pandemic we have had so many family members catch covid. Sadly one did not make it through.

What would you have done? When my wife tested positive on that self test, we did not know how sick she/we were going to get. We had nonrefundable hotel reservations for 3 nights in London before flying home on an EZair flight. As it turned out, we both had moderate symptoms for several days. We could have followed your suggestion, not told anyone, isolated in our hotel room, and flown home at our most contagious time. No insurance or Princess claims. If we had needed medical help after leaving the ship, it would all go to Princess insurance, which would require a medical report and receipts for everything. Who knows when we would have been able to fly home. At least Princess provided the necessary positive covid test and isolation paperwork, an isolation hotel room for 5 days, and meal allowance ($100 per day per person no receipts required). Since the rules at that time required 10 days after testing positive before we could fly to the US, Princess rebooked our flights at no charge. We were able to amend our hotel reservations at significant cost. We have submitted a claim to Princess for 10 days meal allowance and a claim to Princess insurance for the difference in hotel bookings. We did not submit claims for transportation or hotel charges that we would have spent if we hadn't told anyone.

Good for G. to decide to cruise again. We all make our own decisions, and have to live with whichever way the dice rolls. 

 

Four different doctors in July decided I had long COVID despite the fact I never tested positive.  They said the tests are not 100% accurate and that I had all the usual long COVID symptoms. I have seen three specialists and had two diagnostic procedures done under anesthesia in four months. This virus is definitely not just the flu. I am no longer sick at all, but, as you might imagine, four months of being ill takes a huge toll on the body. I wish every day I had not stepped foot on the Ruby but my husband is convinced I am still alive only because I got off the ship when I did.

THIS. So much this. And that’s the thing with COVID. When those first symptoms start, you have no idea where/how this is going to end.

I’m glad you are well now, and can try and put it behind you.
I know you had been sick a bit before you even left to meet up with G. So, you’ve had quite a year… I’m just hopeful that you change your mind one  day and continue your blog.

Princess did NOT adhere to that in our case. DH was quarantined and got the FCC with no issues. I was a close contact and was told in writing I’d get nothing (boy, was that ever accurate! 😆)

Princess seems to have covered their bases.. since you were not quarantined or medically isolated, and didn’t miss any days… other than leaving the ship on your own, something I might have chosen to do, as well.

Here is just a small bit from the Princess website concerning getting Covid onboard.

If this happens to us later this month, I guess I’ll need to get some sort of proof they are going to give the FCC for both of us, if we are entitled to it. 
I have been reading where some people said Princess never have them their test results, so they had no proof to put in for insurance coverage. So much to remember to keep track of these days.

Usually only a crime if you INTENTIONALLY infect someone with a deadly virus, etc. If we prosecuted everyone who negligently/accidentally infected someone with the flu, the cold, etc. and that person was compromised and died, lots of people would be behind bars.

That would also require never allowing them to test you - no cruise tours, no cruises that stop at ports requiring testing, many back to back cruises.  It’s limiting but doable not being tested as a contact of someone who is ill would be unavoidable

Yes, but probably exposed too recently to test positive. Tours involving daily bus and train travel are pretty high risk for exposure.

So I am so your wife and I now know a "new normal" and carefully weigh our risks when it comes to our health. My symptoms are so mild I could have missed them so I believe the vaccine and 3 follow up boosters were effective.
