RCCL Will we need to carry some ID all around the ship?

Welcome to the forum Sandie.  Except for gambling, everything you would want to purchase on the ship would be charged to your onboard account via use of your room key/card.  The card will be provided to you when you check in at the terminal. It’s a fairly easy process during which you will need your passport and possibly other documents depending on where your cruise is going.  Take cash to use in your ports of call and, as has been suggested, take your room card and a photo ID with you when you disembark.  You’ll need them to get back to and onto the ship.  Some people use a lanyard to carry their room cards in both on the ship and off.  I don’t, but I believe the casino will give you one on most ships.  But carry is wherever you’re most comfortable.  While onboard lock everything else in the room safe.  Enjoy your trip!

On RCCL, you can use your SeaPass card on the slot machines. 😇

This applies to all cruise lines, actually, not just Royal.  As said by others - the cruise line issues your room key, similar to a hotel, which is your ID and charge card for everything while on-board.  You definitely want your government-issued ID for going ashore, but you don't need your passport when getting off the ship at a port-call unless you're told you do.

One thing to add to this.....depending on the ship, the key card might be waiting at the room instead.

On our last RCi cruise, they refused to punch a hole for the clip-on type lanyard. I guess it has to do with the chip imbedded in the card.   Instead, use a lanyard with a clear pouch for the card.

Just the Sea Pass will do.  Not only will you need this to make purchases and use your drink package on the ship, but you'll need it to embark and disembark the ship at all ports.  It also serves as your room key.

On our last RCI cruise, we were advised at every port stop that a photo ID was required along with the sea pass card.

To be fair - the OP wasn't really asking about port calls, they were asking about on-board for which the statement you bolded is certainly accurate.  It's certainly advisable to carry government-issued photo ID when going ashore.

Thanks Hallux.  I may have misunderstood your earlier comment.
