There was a thread a while ago that I mentioned looking at river cruises after getting a brochure from Viking

And then someone suggested also looking at other cruise lines. I agreed and said I also just got an e-mail ad from Gate 1 that included what we were looking for.

DW suggested March, and I was looking at March next year, but then she wanted March this year. And today I booked for us a Gate 1 river cruise March this year!

Since I looked and there is basically nothing in the river cruise section, does anyone know the dress code for river cruises, specifically from Gate 1?

I would expect that information could be found on their own website.

But, I don't understand the "there is basically nothing in the river cruise section"  comment.  If you go to the River Cruising forum and search for Gate 1, you'll  get several hits.  Maybe one of those will have the information you are looking for.

We found on our river cruises (on another line) that there wasn't really a dress code.  Generally Smart Casual would fit.  I also had a semi-dressy skirt/blouse for fancier dinners onboard.

You will also get several hits by searching for 'dress code' or similar - several threads and discussions within threads, on such, have posted in them myself

My own experience with a river cruise  - the dress standard was neat casual.

There were a couple of dressier dinners and events - most people dressed up a bit for them but still not formal wear.

I did search Gate 1 in the river cruise section, and there was very little information.

We were on a Gate 1 Danube river cruise this past summer.  There really was no dress code--it was all very casual.  It was warm and I wore shorts almost the entire time.  Pretty much no one had a jacket or tie.  Some people dressed in more resort casual, but it was not required.  It was all very relaxed.

I looked a little harder and found this in my travel documents from Gate 1 for this trip:

On Your Cruise - European River Cruises
Attire:
River cruise dress code is always casual. Modest attire (no bathing suits) is requested in the dining room at all meals. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella.

Thanks, but LOL, I wanted to respond to that post letting others know we had booked the river cruise in question, but it turns out the topic was CLOSED. 🤦‍♂️

Yep, that's what happens when members forget some of the Guidelines they agreed to follow when registering for membership.

Too many folks posting any sort of venue for cruise purchase, cryptic TA name hints or asking for TA info to be emailed. Therefore, the thread had to be closed.

I feel bad for the clueless cruiser who posts on these forums.  Such snark.  Certainly we could treat them with a little more respect.  As to the question about dress code, ontheweb, river cruising is relaxed.  Wear long pants and tuck in your shirt; add a scarf and some jewelry for dinner.  If you want to go all out, wear a blazer to the Captain's Welcome Dinner and those sparkly earrings that have been waiting for an opportunity to shine.

Is it as relaxed as NCL where I wore tie dye tee shirts all the time including dinners?

None of the replies seemed snarky to me. 🤔

Anyway I would say tie dye tee shirts would be fine for maybe all but the few dressier events - the captain's gala dinner, and  if you go out to an off board event in the evening.

If you want to wear tie dye tee shirts most of the time, I would just take one dressier outfit to wear on the other few occasions - not full formal but dressy top and long pants sort of thing.

I don't see t-shirts at dinner as 'relaxed'.

Would informal be a better term?

Actually, I did not only wear tie dye tee shirts; I also wore a Bob Marley tee shirt I bought in Jamaica at a cruise stop. 😉

It’s all in the wording or should i say the subtle differences in the way different nationalities interpret the wording, for instance when we first started river cruising the expression ‘country club casual’ was used widely, well excuse me as an Englishwoman what the *** did this mean? I remember one company using the expression ‘cocktail wear’ very 50s I think. We’ve only been cruising 15 years and things have changed but the men still try to outdo each other with their T’shirt logos during the day, in the evening I have noticed some ladies wearing, a certain ‘guess who’s wearing designer but not designer label. I’d say if it’s - clean, tidy, non smelly and if you feel comfortable then you can’t go far wrong, relax (but not to much) and enjoy.

Maybe a more modern term is business casual?  For men, a polo or button down shirt with khakis, for women a nice top and slacks.  Anyhow, that's how we dressed for our 2019 river cruise and most were dressed as we were.  Clean unfaded jeans were worn and looked OK, but those with suits and floor-length dresses definitely stood out.

There's kind of an egalitarian vibe on river cruises--whether you are in aquarium class, or the gigantic suites, all eat in the same dining room off the same menu.

Not so on Scenic. Those on top deck have their own restaurant, and there's another restaurant with a special menu to which others in the middle on lower decks get an invite.

Since the OP asked about Viking,  the post you commented on assumed we were still talking about Viking.  Did not realize there were different 'castes' of travelers on Scenic.  Personally l like not being treated like a steerage passenger down in aquarium class.

I originally asked about Viking, but then got an e-mail from Gate 1. We had in the past gone on Gate 1 escorted tours (Central Europe and Peru), and thought highly of them. We ended up booking a Gate 1 river cruise for this March. (I was actually looking at March 2025, but DW picked a date for this March and when I found a couple of cabins available for that date, booked one of them for us.)

I believe they also do that egalitarian dinner. Can someone confirm that?

Also is there a buffet option instead of dinner. I sometimes want to eat earlier, and DW on all of our ocean cruises has said she gets tired of being waited on and also likes to make her own salad in the buffet,

Having traveled on Scenic many times I do not recognise the description given by pontac there is no separate restaurant for top deck passengers but they do get an invite to Table La Rive on one evening of the cruise, it has a tasting menu. Everyone gets an opportunity to dine at L’Amour Restaurant which usually gives the chefs an extra chance to show what they’re made off. There is also a light bites section in the lounge which is open all day until the main restaurant opens in the evening.

All very similar to other river cruise lines I believe.

oops forgot there’s also cabin service just order when and what you require. You can also order a picnic if you decide to go off piste as it were.

Canal archive's post above is how our Europe Scenic river cruise went too.

There was no separate restaurant for dinner   - but there was a special table which higher level passengers went to 10 or 12 of them per night I think, - so nobody ate separately every night , most of them ate with rest of us most nights and there was an invitation for all passengers once per cruise to a special dinner in separate section behind main restaurant. People dressed up a bit more when invited to that.

I would call the dress code more relaxed, or informal, than business casual.

Some people dressed as you described but also people wore shorts ,casual sundresses, tee shirts - and, as you mentioned, jeans.

(of course the weather also played into that)
