This was probably one of Park Wests special cruises where they invite some of their best customers to "special" showings and often have one of the artists whose paintings they carry on board.

Most do not realize that many of the paintings they sell are giclee prints that they can print on demand and ship out. Not exactly unique, high value original art.

Not know they are giclee prints?  How could you not?  I'm not an artist, but of all the "original" art that I own, there's always paint texture on the canvas (or wood, or whatever the artist uses) that is not on a giclee print.  Look, I may have fallen off the turnip truck, but it wasn't yesterday!

I didn’t know there were enough people to justify a special sailings, as PT Barnum said……

after seeing the art recently on the K I realized many people have never visited an art museum

One of the Park West people cornered my friend on a recent cruise (she was naive and unknowing and went into their gallery space).  Understand that my friend used to work at the Archives of American Art (its a division of the Smithsonian and is confused with their other galleries sometimes but you can figure out what its specialty is).  She actually did not tell them what she really thought of their claims and descriptions of the artwork .....

You know that I know that but a lot of people buying do not know that.

Though some are giclee with some painted highlights. so you get some texture.

Isn't this somewhat the same with everything that is sold onboard?  The jewelry? The watches? The purses, etc.  But for some reason they do well enough onboard ships to still exist.  I'm actually shocked that Park West is successful enough to be able to close the Crows Nest.  What is HAL thinking?  And this is JMO,  Cherie

The same as with other large groups that can negotiate what special arrangements thst they need for their group from private events in some venues, to taking over one of the dining rooms to any number of other things.

In the case of Park West there is an existing contract which may oy may not include these special cruise arrangements. Unlike other groups the cruise line  gets a cut of their onboard sales.

Saw one of these on Princess. They basically took over sky walkers for their meeting space  for a 7 day cruise.

I have seen, somewhere, a posting that lists what groups are on what cruises. Has anyone else seen this and know where it can be found?

No one list. Best bet do a search for your specific cruise.

If it’s like the Effy Jewelry cruise, these may be big “art” spenders who received the cruise “free” based upon past purchases.

So these cruises are similar to casino comps, or do the “buyers” pay for the cruise?

I had no idea these types of cruises existed- only that there were “events” onboard for anyone to attend and get fleeced.

I was not referring to any large group taking over areas but the over charge of certain  merchandise on the ships, and the possibility that the merchandise is not what they "advertise".   They represent that it's a good deal but you need to know what you're buying.   I was just responding and agreeing with post #51 by leerathje.  It's just my opinion about the shopping on board.  Cherie

I know the Effy Alaska cruise this summer is like casino comp in that they were offering a free inside cabin if one spent $2000. I did not bite. Not sure how the Park West event works, but would not be surprised if it were similar.

DW sent me up to get coffee at a quarter to four. They closed the doors to the Crow's Nest behind me, and asked me to exit on the other side but that was blocked off by paintings so they let me out through the heavy doors.

PS when you complain on app Seattle receives a direct message also.  I was saddened to see Park West back onboard.  They were almost sued out of existence but now they are back. Yuck

They are back because of the huge amount of revenue the cruise lines make from this unethical company that has taken advantage of unwary passengers for years. Closing the Crows nest every night is ridiculous and should be unacceptable by passengers. There are plenty of other ship venues that could be used that are not as popular by guests,

Where?

HAL ships do not have the best layout when it comes to multi use venues. Most are used for nightly entertainment and as such used after 4.

The Crows Nest is mostly used during the day for its ocean views with some activities.

Are there really that many people that buy paintings on board??

I cannot say. But when I went through the Deck 10 elevator lobby with the coffee at 3:50, there were five or six people waiting for the doors to the Crow's Nest to open.

Aren't all the Lincoln center stage spaces basically unused for now?

Yes and right next to the “art gallery” on the Oosterdam.

Is there somewhere else to get specialty coffee when the CN is closed off?

No. There is not. Of course the Neptune Lounge has its machine but that's for those living the suite life.

Exactly - and that's a real problem for cover lovers. Not to mention closing off an outside view.

The thing is, Park West is NOT a specialty group taking over ONE cruise. They are the company with the art contract for EVERY SAILING. If they paid big bucks to bring lots of people aboard and took over everything for one sailing, so be it. To let one of their contract service providers shut down the Crows Nest every evening of every sailing is a different thing entirely.

Shore excursions, on the starboard side of the Crow's Nest, does remain open. I do not know how much of the area is open, but perhaps there is hope for the view lovers if not for the coffee aficionados.
