Hi Meg and Carol-what would we do without you !!:)

Well, Carol, I slept on your remark,(well maybe I was awake a lot thinking about it) "My advice would be to focus in on a few must see's in NY - there's no way to do it all in one day.

So fickle me, I think:p). has made up our minds( my DW leaves the planning to me-which I don't mind, since I live on this computer.

We will be in Newark at noon on Wednesday ready to do our 'sightseeing thing' for that day. Then Thursday, all day, we will do our sightseeing thing again. One of these days do Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island and maybe Ground Zero and like you suggested Wall St( I'll straighten that place out :D) and seaport downtown area.

Then the other day do Times SQ-Empire State and I think what you call uptown area.

THAT"S IT ..I am not changing my mind., it's set in cement:eek:........ unless you ladies tell me too !!:D

Now maybe, you, my travel 'gurus' can help.

And in return I promise to help you folks, when you travel into my town of 1500 people.:p I promise you, I won't let you get lost. I'll lead you to our one gas station, one bank, one grocery store, one ice cream stand, one hardware store.and one Hooter's Bar(just kidding ) I'll even lead you to my home for a glass of Northwest Pennsylvania apple cider !!

Thanks again,

Frank

I have a question please. We will be arriving in Newark, NJ in the early afternoon and my friend would like to go to Atlantic City. I am wondering how far and how to get there besides a taxi ? Does anyone have an answer for me ? Thank you :)

OH NO!!!!!!!!!! it's over 2 hours away...no taxi. You could rent a car and drive...

there MAY be a bus from the area...or NYC. there WAS a train from philly but that would take WAYYYYYY too long.

try this...

http://www.academybus.com/casinos_general_information.asp

you MAY have to get into NYC to the port authority but depending on where you stay, that's kind of easy. If you stay at any of these hotels on Glimcher Realty Way under Newark/Elizabeth (all have airport transportation too) you can get a bus to the port authority easily...it;s right there..

Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott newark/elizabeth

Country Inn & Suites Newark / Elizabeth.

Why Atlantic City? Gambling?

bite your tounge...they have a LOVELY beach too! (and...SSSSHHHHhh....the casinos are really losing money and my happy little state's economy NEEDS money....we are VERY happy to have travelers donating to New Jersey's economy!!!!

:D:p;)

(but the beach IS really nice!)

Yes it is for gambling ! ;) I have been there before but my best friend has never been there and would love to visit. We are staying at the Courtyard by Marriott Newark/Elizabth. Thank you so much for the information. These boards are like a book for dummies when it comes to needing answers. :D

Why don't you cancel the Courtyard, rent a car, and go to Atlantic City for the night? You will not be happy with the public transportation options. Then you can eat and drink and stay up as late as you like without having to drive back to a hotel at Newark airport.

Mapquest says it is about 2 hours - you would have no trouble getting back for the cruise the following morning.

Try the country inn newark/elizabeth....i think the package is on their website.

you DO NOT want to stay at the best western.

i have left my car at a couple other hotels as well....but, i have high status with marriott so that may be why! i have stayed at the Springhill suites and COurtyard Newark/elizabeth....(there are 2 CYs...one is by the COuntry inn and the other by the Springhill)

check my blog for more info about hotels...link is below.

be advised that if you are there on a weekend rates can be SUPER expensive......and you do NOT want to stay anyplace that ISN'T a casino hotel...with the exception of the Sheraton by the convention center or the Courtyard.....there are WAY too many dumps in AC....

Meg - It appears they are sailing on a Thursday. I'm seeing casino hotel rates in the $125 range. I don't see any reason for them to stay at a Newark airport hotel if they really want to be in Atlantic City.

that's actually not a bad rate......PLUS sometimes there are packages too.....so......i would check on rental car rates and maybe just stay.....AC can have moments of nice!

gotta be sure to get some salt water taffy...plain-the chocolate covered stuff is too much of a good thing!

the Trop used to have good packages, and Trump had some on occasion at the marina.....that's another thing...sometimes harrahs and trump marina can be better values....

skip resorts-they are really in trouble, if they are even open...and the Trop WAS having issues, but i THINK they got worked out.

they remodeled the Taj Mahal. Caesars tends to be pricey.

hope that helps..........

138east that is an awesome idea ! I will check with her to see if she would be willing to drive, because I know I won't. Actually the hotel would cost me nothing in Atlantic City. ;) Yes I have lots of free comps at the casino's. LOL I know we could stay at a Harrah's or Ceasars for free. If she says she will drive it then we will do it, but I'n not going to count on her saying yes. :o I think she just wanted to visit for 2 or 3 hours. Thanks for everyone's help.

Ok I made my reservation through priceline and I have no refund so I guess we are staying in New Jersey. That's ok though I am looking forward to it. We will just have to plan another trip to Atlantic City. LOL :D Thanks everyone for your help with our questions.

Hi all-Meg and Carol,

I found a good map(one that you folks recommended of the EWR airport, the airtrain stops, the Newark Penn Station )and it shows the Path leaving from N. Penn Station going to NYC. I am staying at the Crowne Plaza. What are my options on getting on the Path to NYC from the N. Penn Station... anywhere else that I can get on the Path? Can I get on the NJ Transit anywhere near our hotel. I am looking for options where I can get on the Path without going to the EWR first to get on the Airtrain and then getting on the NJ Transit to go to the N. Penn Station. It seems the cheapest way is take the hotel shuttle to EWR, take the airtrain to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station, get on the NJ trainsit and go to the Penn Station where I can get on the Path. Seems like a lot of getting on and off. But I think, from reading these posts, that taking a cab from hotel to Penn Station is expensive..your thought please.

Thank you very much.

Frank

Anyone know how much cab fare is from Newark International to Cape Liberty Pier?

Also, what is the Holiday Inn Newark area hotel like? Area safe? Clean? How far is this from the Airport as well.

Thanks in advance

Michelle

Update- I won the Hilton Newark- Elizabeth area from priceline. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Any idea how much a cab is to the Pier from here.

Thanks again

Michelle

Frank,

You've pretty much figured it out. Hotel shuttle to P4, air train to Newark Airport Station, train to Newark Station and Path to NY. I think the cab option would be $20-25.

However, you could explore the bus options. I don't know much about the buses in the area, but I'm sure we could find out. There was someone very knowledgeable about the Newark buses who was posting on this forum a while ago. My suggestion is to start a new thread asking about buses.

My thoughts are this. I know there are local buses because the folks that work in the airport area need to be able to get to work some way other than by car. Wherever your hotel is, there should either be a bus to Newark station or a bus directly to New York Port Authority. Most folks who post on this forum want to know about hotels, cabs and car services. When we start talking any kind of public transportation, they lose interest quickly. If you could get a bus to Newark station, I think it would be faster than the shuttle, air train, and train to Newark Station. This would be better for going on Path to downtown NY. If you could get a bus to New York, it would leave you at Port Authority - 40th & 8th - which is one avenue from Times Square. Quite frankly, this might be your best option for going to midtown.

However, the return trip is another problem on the bus. If you return from Port Authority, you must be very careful that you get on the correct bus. The Newark area is not a place that you want to find yourself lost. The same thing will apply for a bus from Newark station. You do not want to be hanging out there waiting for a local bus, particularly at night. So my advice would be to spend the money and take the train back to the airport. This is a well traveled route without the same safety concerns.
