Can you beat this?

Recommended Posts

Just back from a FOS Eastern Caribbean cruise. I thought I had seen everything before, but I was wrong.

One evening before a production show a woman seated in the audience near us asked me to help her grade school-aged daughter save eight seats while she went off somewhere in search of the rest of her party...or maybe another drink?

When I told her it was against the rules and I wasn't about to babysit her child as I was on vacation and didn't know either of them, she left her daughter alone to cope with the task. Where do these people come from and why do they think anyone would cooperate with such a harebrained, irresponsibility action?

When some people set foot on a cruise ship, does all reality and common sense go out the door? I kept an eye on the child but wasn't about to save the seats if asked. Should I have told ship security? Would they have done anything?

I know what you mean. While on our last cruise I wanted to take a seat and a woman said she was saving all the seats. I wanted to sit down anyway and try to force her to MAKE ME move. My hubby said, "Don't make a scene." So on our up coming cruise, I'm going to fib to darling hubby and tell him they changed the rules and said that if anyone tells you they are saving seats to ignore this and take a seat and if they keep on and on about it to get your cell phone out and tell them you are phoning security to get it straight. I think if we all did this around the pool or in the show area or anywhere, maybe they will take the HINT and stop with their RUDE behavior.

Ok folks, everyone that has a cell phone needs to take them on their cruise and call their bluff. I may go as far as to ask for their security phone number. I'm about "sick of the rude behavior" of others.

Last year we were in the casino at roulette. Another woman at the table had her eight year old daughter outside waiting for her. Security kept telling her she had to leave but she didn't while we were there. I don't know the outcome, I left because it became distracting. It was very late (after midnight).

At dinner one night on Freedom, I was eating at MTD alone as my traveling companion wasn't feeling well. I was seated next to a table of about 8 kids, ranging in age from 5-14 or so. They ran the waiter ragged, half the time just so they could giggle over how easy it was to order him around. It was horrible.

I brought it up to the waiter on a subsequent night and he told me that the parents of those kids were sitting at a near-by table. I never saw them speak to the kids. I don't think they could have been paying ANY attention. They designated a KIDS' table in order to enjoy their ADULTS' table and made the unchaperoned gang the waiter's problem.

I could NEVER have been as polite and accommodating as he was!!! I hope they tipped him well, because I know his service to other customer's was not up to par, given the constant demands by those kids!

What are people thinking?? Really!!!

My favorite story ... when I was on the Mariner out of LA, a woman was saving nearly the entire front row of seats along one side of the ice rink for the ice show. The place filled up and there were literally people trying to sit in the aisle. One woman from the front row of the middle section (facing the skater's entrance) cut the corner over to the side to tell the people on the steps that the woman taking up the first row could not save seats and that they should feel free to sit there. An argument between these two women ensued, after the show started, that let to thrown punches and the arrival of security to a) tell people to fill those seats and b) take the SeaPass cards of both of the women involved in the scuffle.

It's a sign of the times. I.E. no manners being instilled and the all important "entitlement" attitude.

I nearly came to blows with a woman who wanted on our elevator which was packed and she wanted all her relatives(children included) to squish in with us. I pointed to the plaque on the elevator wall that said the weight limit and 13 guests was all that they would allow. She was frightful! Glared at me and said "Whatever". When she left the elevator, the whole car cheered!

My favorite line from a movie was from Lonesome Dove, the scene where Captain Call beats the living cr-p out of a nasty man and says "I can't abide rudeness in a man!" Sometimes you just wanna bust some chops...know what I mean;):D

When I posted my remarks above I don't think FRESHOFFTHEBOAT understood that the lady was saving 6 rows of seats. That's a lot of seats and that is a little above the normal hogging of seats. It's one thing to save a few but to snap and scream at a fellow passenger while on vacation is uncalled for.

I would have to get some popcorn for that! :D

The ice skating show was probably a let down after that. :D

Unfortunately I think children are being left alone to do what they want in every aspect of today's society. I am a mother of 3 who are still young, ages 7, 4 and 4, and I was at Toys R Us last Saturday and there were a group of kids maybe ages 11-15. They were taking the bikes with training wheels and riding them all over the store. Finally after they passed me the 2nd time around the store, I stopped them and told them if I saw them on the bikes again I was going to take them to the front of the store and demand management to page their parent's or whoever they were with. I would not hesitate and take someone's "saved" seats if they were saving more than maybe 2 or 3. I would like to assume if it were only a few seats maybe someone in their party had to take a child, or themselves, on a potty break.

A fist fight before the ice show! We didn't get that when we were on Mariner:)

All kidding aside, some people shouldn't be allowed to leave home.

I had a lady try and hold a bunch of seats on my last allure cruise for chicago. I laughed and sat down anyways. She yelled at me for about 10 mins and then proceeded to go get someone from rccl. She brought him back and yelled at him to tell me to move because she is holding the seats. He made it clear your not allowed to do that and I'm doing nothing wrong since I'm in my seat waiting for the show to start. She cursed him out and said she was going to the front desk and reporting him for not doing his job. She left and the row quickly filled up. She showed up about 5 mins after the show started with the rest of her party. She made a big scene and stormed off. I just waved my drink in the air and smiled.

So there is a clearly written "no saving seats" policy?

I wish I was brave enough to do what you did! I don't mind if someone is holding one or two seats, but the people who try to save entire rows just burn me up. I think it is the height of tackiness. If you want the best seats, then come sit down early like everyone else. Otherwise - too bad!

I've always been told no saving seats on rccl. Pool and shows.

A little off topic but I never understood why a group of say 10, traveling together, HAD to sit all together on the same row for a show. What is the big deal about splitting up to a few smaller groupings? I’m not talking about splitting up parents and young children, just perhaps a few adults.

Group mentality.

We had a group of 19. Went to the shows when we wanted and sat wherever there were seats. Did not care if we sat with our group, some of our group, or none of our group.

I would not save seats for anyone, even if it was permitted. You want a good seat, get there and get it.

Putting the children at a separate table in the MDR seems to have become a trend. We saw this on our last cruise. There was a huge table with several families. They put all the children at a table next to them, but never glanced their way. The kids tossed bread across the table, ordered the waiter around and ran through the MDR. I had to excuse myself to go to the restroom, and several of the children were running up and down the staircase outside the MDR. A member of the RCCI staff stopped them and told them they could not be on the stairs. They turned and thundered back through the dining room to their table. They had missed an entire course and when they returned, the waiter had to start taking their orders. Not once did I see a parent involved with these children. I too hope the waiter was well paid for putting up with the horrible behavior..of the parents. You really can't blame the children.

It never works for me to be confrontational with someone about seats. Invariably if a scene gets made, that person who screams at me will be in the cabin next to me, at the adjoining dinner table, on the same tender, and sitting next to me on the flight home.
