Theft on Oasis

Recommended Posts

I'm reporting this JUST as an FYI, not to provoke a lecture or start a flame war.

I just want to pass on a warning. My Chanel sunglasses were stolen by another passenger this week on Oasis. I set them down on a ledge in the Opal theater during bingo and absent-mindedly walked away at the end of bingo. I returned within 5-7 minutes, before the crew had even started to clean up. By the time I returned, the sunglasses were gone, never to be seen again.

I had hoped someone turned them into guest services, but no such luck -- the concierge even went down to guest services to go through the lost and found himself.

When I shared the info with some of the crew, they told me that other items, such as iPhones and iPads, had also gone missing.

Moral of the story: While it's absolutely each passenger's responsibility to keep track of their own possessions, and it's my own fault for walking away from my sunglasses, each passenger needs to be aware that theft can and does happen on board ships.

We were sitting in the WJ on embarkation day and having lunch. It was very busy [no surprise] and someone asked to sit with us. We consolidated our items and a few hours later I realized I had left my camera on the table. but, the person we let sit with us had turned it in. :)

The reason I mentioned this is that I had a little trouble getting it back. All I could tell them was that is was square and silver and in a zipped black case. I could not remember the brand. It was the beginning of the cruise and there were no pictures on it I could identify.

So, I now have an address label on everything [media/electronic even my phone]. It will not stop someone from stealing it but you are more likely to get it back.

Sorry you sailed with some not so honest folks. On my very first cruise on the first night, I left my purse on a chair in the bar. I honestly didn't realize it until the next morning. My cabinmate and I scoured the room and the bar. Off to customer service and someone turned it in, with all the contents (all my travel monies). I was truly grateful there were some honest people onboard!!

Being on a cruise is no different than being anywhere else. There's a cross section of society and not everyone is honest. We've seen posters on here post "finders keepers" and "posession is nine-tenths of the law" type of responses before so there are obviously those that think nothing of taking other's property. We are always as careful on a cruise with our stuff as we are anywhere else.

Hubby lost his phone on boarding day once....thought it was gone forever, so we called and suspended service, etc.....well, on the last night I told him to go and check lost and found, and there it was! I guess we were lucky someone turned it in...not everyone will.

I make 35% size photocopies of our luggage tags. I laminate them with packing tape, and then use tiny zip tags to attach them to our camera, backpacks and purses. I use packing tape to attach them flat to the back of all ipads and computers. I figure that if someone is out to steal, then this won't help, but if they come across our belongings by accident, then maybe this will remind them to turn things in to guest services.

So sorry that happened to you.

In 2002, we were sailing on Celebrity's Millennium and it was our port day to St Lucia. We were having breakfast in the buffett just prior to taking a mountain bike excursion. My husband went into tne men's room and left the bag with our tix, money, camera and wallet in tne bag.

He high tailed it back to the restroom to discover it was gone. :(

We were running late at this point so I suggested we plead our case at the pier regarding missing our tix

Fortunately, the Celebrity employee believed our story and we managed to go on the tour with no tix, money or camera. We shared our story with a fellow passenger and she graciously loaned us money to tip the tour guides.

Returning to the ship, we stopped at guest relations and some kind soul turned in the bag with everything in tact.

I wanted to thank that passenger and give them a reward but was instructed by the staff that they specifically requested to remain anonymous.

Not only was I impressed that a fellow passenger was so kind hearted but that the staff also was honest as not a cent was taken from Dh wallet.

I wrote a letter to the Captain praising the honest employees and we received not only a bottle of champagne and a basket of fruit but a very heartfelt voice mail from the staff thanking me for taking the time to write the letter.

We have sailed many more times since then and I can assure you, it won't happen again.

Oh, I did return the money lent to us by the passenger that lent us tip money as soon as we were back onboard.

Unfortunately there are dishonest people everywhere. When you have 6000 passengers on a ship (plus crew) there are bound to be people who feel "finders keepers." But my gut tells me that most people on a cruise ship are there for a great vacation and basically honest. I think that the problem is that you don't hear so much about "gee I lost my ..... and it was turned in by an honest person." You do hear of the dishonest people. So it tends to skew the numbers. In fact if you look at the 12 previous posts only 3 talk of something being lost and not turned in. Anyway, I am always careful on cruises, try not to leave cameras, Kindles, etc. lying around. I can only imagine how discouraging it is to loose something and not have it turned in on a ship. My wife lost a very expensive pair of prescription sunglasses in a parking lot near our house. We went back very quickly, looked where she had been parked, asked at all the stores, no luck. Someone likely found them and kept them. And they were prescription! Oh well, I sort of buy the whole "what goes around comes around" theory. At least makes me feel a little better to think that they will "get theirs."

Hey, it happens everywhere. A few years ago we stayed and gambled at Caesar's in Las Vegas. My wife usually has a sweater as the casino can get quite cold. One night, while playing slots, she left the sweater on the chair and realized it a few minutes later. We went back to where she had gambled and it was gone. We checked with Caesar's L&F, to no avail. We did this for the next 4 days--alas it was gone forever never to be seen again.

No flames from me. I always appreciate posts like this as a reminder because I know that I sometimes become a little too lax and I let my guard down a bit when we are on a cruise. I, fortunately, have not had to pay a price...yet. My parents got ripped off on Labadee when they took a walk and left some items on their chairs.

Sorry you lost your sunglasses. This will happen anywhere if things are left behind unattended, obviously including cruise ships.

We were sitting outside on deck 4 on the Explorer a few years ago when I lost my husband's wallet. My husband always carries his wallet on a cruise. I put my wallet in the cabin safe.

For some reason he asked me to hold his wallet. I put it in my small cross body purse. I got something out of my purse and didn't realize that I dropped his wallet. We got up and went inside. About 10 minutes later we realized that the wallet was missing. We went back to where we were sitting and couldn't find it. Next, we went to guest services. Someone had turned in the wallet. Nothing was missing. We wanted to thank the person who turned in the wallet. Guest services called their cabin so that we could thank them. We offered to buy them a drink but they declined.

I'm sorry that we didn't think to write and commend guest services for their help and their honesty.

I've been on both ends of this kind of thing. On our last cruise, I was walking past a couple of chairs overlooking the Promenade from Deck 10. On one chair was a cell phone. I left it with guest services. I'm hoping it's owner retrieved it. Later that week, I used the ladies room out by the pool. I brought my Coach wristlet with me which contained my smartphone, a small amount of cash & my sea pass card. I guess I must have left the wristlet in there but I didn't notice it was missing until about an hour later when I went to order a drink by the pool. Fortunately, the waiter knew me & didn't need to see my card, but in a panic I went back to the ladies room and my bag was gone. I had visions of enormous purchases being made on my card & having to replace a very expensive phone. When I got to guest services, there it was! The kindness of strangers. I had read the week before a passenger on our ship was arrested for stealing another passenger's Sea Pass card & buying some expensive cologne in addition to stealing a large amount of products from the spa... Thankfully, that guy didn't find my missing items. ;)

Sorry to hear about the loss of your sunglasses, Limtax2000. I misplaced my prescription glasses somewhere during a HAL cruise, switching between those and my prescription sunglasses. I checked with Guest Relations, even with the tour company we'd done an excursion with that day.

Fortunately I also had my contacts with me...but unbelievably five months later I received a call from HAL, saying they had my glasses! I had my business card in the eyeglass case, and I have no idea where the glasses were all that time- but it was nice to get them back!
