Blondie70 Posted November 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2014 What's the best time to cruise in the Spring to avoid the Spring Break crowds?! I figure all of April is in the strike zone. Would the first or second week in March be good? Sherri Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
CruiserBruce Posted November 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 6, 2014 Spring or Winter Breaks can start as early as mid February, and run until the middle to later April. How to avoid? Go on a cruise longer than 7 days. Don't cruise the Caribbean in that window. Go on a nicer/more expensive cruise line, Like Holland America, Celebrity, or higher. paul929207 Posted November 7, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 7, 2014 Also, try the smaller ships. They either have no kids program or a smaller one, so few families even during spring break
fishywood Posted November 7, 2014 #4 Share Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) Peak time of college spring break is late February thru mid March. By mid-April most colleges and universities (at least here in Florida) are already gearing up for final exams. Peak large family group time is in the weeks leading up to Easter, which is a bit late this year (April 20). My personal must-avoid list has large groups of teenagers ahead of drunken fratboys--but if it is those fratboys you are trying to avoid, there will be far fewer of them the last two weeks of April than early March as you propose. DD has her high school spring break the first week of April. You could hit spring breakers anytime in March or April.
cb at sea Posted November 7, 2014 #7 Share Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) "Spring Break" is really no different than other times...all sailings are "full"....of course, any short cruise will have more "partiers" onboard than longer trips...but you are under no obligation to party-hardy! There are still plenty of quiet places on the ship to be! Edited November 7, 2014 by cb at sea
Rare Keith1010 Posted November 7, 2014 #8 Share Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) If you want less kids then smaller ships and ones with longer itineraries would be the best approach. Also a saling i second half of January will have less children too. Keith Edited November 7, 2014 by Keith1010
lisiamc Posted November 7, 2014 #9 Share Posted November 7, 2014 We're trying Legend of the Seas for 11 nights in early March. Older/smaller ship, longer itinerary: it has potential to be fairly calm. I'll report back!

Yes, I realized just after it was too late to edit that I had put 2014's date. But it's the sentiment that counts, right?
Rare Roz Posted November 7, 2014 #12 Share Posted November 7, 2014 Maybe the Orthodox Christian calendar? It's April 5, 2015 on my calendar. Roz
Blondie70 Posted November 8, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted November 8, 2014 We're looking at a 7 day out of Galveston. With everyone's advice, I think I've settled on February being best to avoid most of the chillins ;), so now the trick is getting the best price! Thanks!! Rare geoherb Posted November 9, 2014 #15 Share Posted November 9, 2014 I've taken several spring break cruises. DH teaches at a community college, so that is one of the weeks we can go. The best thing to do is find a ship that has plenty of adults only areas. Avoid ships that attract college age kids. We have never had a problem on Holland America or Princess. Princess, HAL, & Celebrity are good choices for a week or more because they don't attract the Spring Break crowd. Avoid very short cruises (3 or 4 nighters) especially on Carnival or NCCL. ;) LuLu
