Crown "smoking lounge"....really...??

So "flame" me if you must.....but as a cigar smoker the policy on the Crown is really not so good for us. We are not allowed to smoke up on the pool decks, only in the lounge off the casino, which would be just fine, if it were large enough and had a decent ventilation system. It's so very small, and there is no ventilation in there, our loved ones can't stand being in there with us, the smoke is so thick it sticks to everything on you. Up on deck 16 I was not allowed to smoke with the other cigarette smokers. Personally, I'd rather smell someone smoking a nice cigar than a cigarette any day. There other ships (Sapphire, Golden) have great lounges with good ventilation. It seems this was a total afterthought....and on superbowl Sunday, it was not enough room for everyone. Just sayin......:(

It has nothing to do with the smell of a cigarette versus cigar and everything to do with fire - a mortal enemy of cruise ships. A cigar is a much bigger tobacco product and as such has more fire active when smoked. That increases the chance of an ember starting a fire. Hence the ban against cigars and pipes.

As for your loved ones not wanting to be in the bar with you maybe they are trying to tell you something. As for clothing, I can always tell who they are by the smell coming from their clothes. You may not be able to smell it but we non-smokers always can.

It's really a shame in this day and age of "political correctness" and diversity and inclusion that people can't just allow others to enjoy something. Understood, imposing on anothers breathing space is not acceptable, but just create an environment that is comfortable and has air to breathe.

Racial equality, marriage equality, tobacco consumption. One of these things is not like the others.

Yup; clothes, breath, hands, all reek and smell like an ashtray. People say that you can't smell it, but I can smell cigarette smoke from the car in front of me at a stoplight if they've got their window rolled down. On a cruise ship that smoke travels a hundred, two hundred feet, and you can still smell it.

Looked pretty comfortable to me...and it has air, too! ;)

Actually that may be a false premise, depending on what part of the world market they are destined for cigarettes have an ingredient in them, saltpetre, which makes them burn and continue to burn even if they are not actively being puffed. And consequently a significant fire risk.

Decent cigars of the sort most smokers smoke on a ship tend to be just natural tobacco. And cigar smokers are usually responsible people. Of course there are always exceptions, just like any group.

Can't say I have ever heard of a cruise ship fire started by a cigar smoker. Bad maintenance by the cruise line of their electrical equipment, oilfuel injection lines or oily rags and debris left around the engine room seem to have been the main cause recently.

Can't really make that the passengers' fault.

In Europe now, cigarettes have to be self extinguishing, would be surprised if it wasn't same for USA. But I imagine many other parts of the world are still to catch up.

Cigars, all brands I have used, always self exitinguished if not being puffed on.

Actually I am offended by the smell of tobacco smoke anywhere. I do not like to even be close to the casino since it reeks of tobacco smoke.

Can't disagree with that, the Casino is horrible, many longer cruises they do have non smoking nights in there, usually formal nights. Only lingering traces of a stale smell then, probably in the carpet.

I have often wondered if there is a correlation between gambling with money in a Casino, and gambling with your health by cigarette smoking.

Those who are non smokers and do not gamble know that in the end both are quite likely to be losing propositions.

Each to his/her own. Not so good for relatives and loved ones left behind through debt or early death though.

I have a 27 year old nephew who is a compulsive gambler and smoker, it distresses me, but its his choice.

Yes, so can I. Even yesterday, on a cold winter day, I smelled the smoke from the car in front of me. And for many people, the smell of cigar smoke is much more disagreeable than that of cigarettes, so this may be why cigars are permitted in an enclosed area only.

Yes in USA, in all 50 states, cigarettes are now self extinguishing. But of course Princess ships are not American but British and who knows where they get their cigarettes from for on board sales, and there are many nationalities on board who have come through all sorts of dutyfree stores at various airports all round the world.

JFYI I also detest cigarette smoke but do not claim allergies or health damage from the odd whiff of it. Diesel fumes, now that's something else with all those nasty particles...................... definitely carcinogenic and really worth avoiding.

I agree with the OP. DH has always enjoyed a fine cigar or two while on vacation. He doesn't smoke at any other time it is simply a vacation treat. I used to accompany him in the speakeasy and the cigar smoke never bothered me - there were never that many people in there anyway. The last few times we sailed we walked in and then walked immediately out - it was crowded to overflow capacity by cigarette smokers, the smoke was as thick as fog and there was no place to sit. It reminded me of the smoking lounges at Atlanta airport. I felt sorry for the servers and bartenders who were forced to breathe in that "air" for hours at a time.

Gee, that is the same air all those smokers are voluntarily breathing in.

It would be nice if all the different Cruise lines followed Celebritys Smoking Policy. No smoking inside the ship along with No smoking in the Casino and all Balconies.

Actually, I experienced the worst smoke on my Celebrity cruise. The smoking area was located right outside the midship elevators which were on the side of the ship. Waiting for an elevator was excruciating and I stank of smoke every time I used those elevators. There was also smoking in one of the lounges. I remember because I got there early for a Cruise Critic get-together and the CD moved it from one side of the lounge to the other due to smokers. There were ashtrays everywhere in the lounge. This was just over three years ago. Maybe things have changed since then.

Actually it has changed. 2014 B2B Cruise on the Summit. No smoking anywhere on the inside of the ship. Much better than what's currently allowed on Princess and Royal.
