More changes to Bistro on 5?

DH and I will be on Reflection for the second time on March 26. We love this ship and have enjoyed several lovely lunches in Bistro on 5 on both Reflection and Connie--especially on embarkation day. I have read that more changes may be coming soon, such as changing the menu to sushi (we're not fans) and raising the price yet again, this time to $15. Can anyone confirm this?

I spoke to a friend today who works for Celebrity and said this change is coming in February (switch over to sushi and $15.00 charge).

Edited to add: this was specific to Reflection, I don't know about the other ships.

Big mistake. Bistro was awesome in November on the Silhouette. You can get free mediocre sushi every night in the buffet. This would be a waste and I hope it's not fleet wide

I am SO disappointed to hear this!

Me too. We are not huge sushi fans but did enjoy our crepes and other tidbits in Bistro on 5. It was our regular place for embarkation day lunch as well as a few other visits during the cruise. Sadly it was never busy though. Hoping this may be a trial on one ship to see how it goes, or at least that there will still be alternative options to just sushi served.

But we can't stop change so will just have to wait and see on our next cruise in October!

I'm not sure what I think of this idea but I DO recall that a lot of people on here suggested that Bistro on 5 change to a sushi menu so maybe for once Celebrity is listening.

I think it would be wise of them to try it out on one ship before changing others.

Remember the Gastro Bar refit on the Equinox? :o

Is there a general charge to dine at Bistro on 5?

I'm sure there are some who don't like sushi...but Bistro on 5 has been in a tie with Quasar to see how few people step in during a day. If the sushi bar is any good and rationally priced, I think more will use the restaurant...thus more revenue for Celebrity. Sushi has become very popular now that it has evolved to rolls that have only cooked items and veggies....let's call it "modern sushi".

I wouldn't mind having sushi on embarkation day with some Saki....

So that is me back to room service or the buffet on port days, can't stand sushi!

Not a big deal to me but I can't see some suite guests liking this change unless they also continue to provide some soup and salad options.

Sushi does tend to be one of those foods you either love or hate...

I prefer foods on a cruise that I can't come by easily at home. I can eat sushi every meal for a week where I live and not get to every sushi place within a 1/2 drive. No thanks. The Bistro was perfect for me as it was. Oh well.

Yes I agree - we have 50% lovers and 50% haters in our household alone!! But I not a big seafood eater either yet I wouldn't deny anyone their seafood options just on my account!

Funny so far there is a strong reaction to leaving Bistro on 5 stratus quo, yet as mentioned above its never been one of the most popular venues onboard (and the small, but increased surcharge possibly keeps it that way).

One of the reasons we like it though, feels like a secret venue that's never too crowded!

I love sushi, but if the stuff they serve in the buffet is any indication, it won't be worth the $15 upcharge. Also, that would MASSIVELY limit the options for lunch, since the Porch is already seafood-focused - anyone who doesn't like seafood would be out in the cold. Why not something completely different? A real pizzeria, perhaps, a BBQ joint, a taqueria? Even a mini-Silk Harvest would offer more variety than just sushi.

We're going to be on Reflection at the end of February, so I'm anxiously awaiting further news on this topic.

Ugh a $15 charge for modern sushi

This is another reason added to the many other reasons why we are looking toward Viking Ocean cruises ,all inclusive cruising .

Viking all veranda cabins with the smallest being slightly smaller than a sky suite on X . The Viking prices include air R/T ,all the excursions ,wine & beer at lunch & dinner ,a 48000 ton ship with under 1000 pax .NO casino ;but ,more focused on culture & history of the port stops . Add free washers /dryers on every cabin deck :D

When comparing to X + all the extra costs for X the price for Viking looks mighty intriguing :D

Viking does sound interesting...unfortunately I don't see anything shorter than 11 nights. Perhaps when we have a little more flexibility with our schedules...

I find it interesting they are trying this out on Reflection since they already changed the Porch to focus more on seafood. I love seafood and sushi, but I also like variety. Bistro on 5 was very busy on our Reflection cruise (end of November) with the menu that included the daily specials. There was even a wait list on sea days which we had never encountered before. It seems like every time there is a new menu is disappears faster than the previous menu. On top of that they just keep changing the same menus instead of the ones that could use it (Blu, Murano, etc).

I was intrigued by the poster who suggested replacing Bistro with an upscale pizzeria. A small up-charge for good quality (gourmet) pizza, sandwiches, and salads.

My question to all of you pizza aficionados is this: Is it feasible to put in a restaurant-quality pizza oven on a cruise ship (where safety restrictions prohibit anything wood-fired)?

All I know is that, in 14 years of cruising on X and RC, I have yet to run across a decent slice of pizza -- deep dish or thin crust.

We LOVED Bistro and went there on embarkation day and on every sea day. Loved the crepes and pannis. Big mistake to continue this price increasing in the specialties and giving questionable food. Sushi is a delicate food item and is only good with completely fresh ingredients. If they serve third rate sushi and charge $15, Bistro will be even more dead than it can be now.

Are you sure the change is to Bistro or is someone confusing it with the Porch changing to seafood?

As for Bistro on 5, I liked that brief period when X was experimenting with an expanded dinner menu that included steak, chicken, pasta. On Summit, I think.

That is too bad, we enjoyed Bistro on 5. I am not a big fan of sushi.

Absolutely. While I love pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven, it's not the only way to make great pizza. Many restaurants have gas or electric ovens - as long as you can get them hot enough, you can make great pizza. Great pizza also requires GREAT crust, which is something Celebrity has a real problem with (in my experience, ALL of the breads on X are terrible). High hydration, adequate fermentation time to develop flavor, etc. Then obviously you need excellent toppings/sauce, but that is much easier to get right than the dough/cooking equation. I absolutely think it can be done on a ship, but who knows if X would be willing to invest the time and attention it would take?

Try Alfredos on the Royal or Regal Princess! :D (And it's free !!!)
